Travis Martinez: Masculinity and Control in Yellowjackets
Tumblr media
sorry for the pretentious title. i need to talk about travis for a second. i have a consistent mythos in my head about who he is as a character that i forget people don't have. yes i am embarrassed. incredibly long meta under the cut.
First and foremost, I think it is so important to remember that this guy is a LOSER. He's never been to a school dance. He got made fun of and given a cruel nickname in the 7th grade that has stuck with him all throughout high school. He hates his dad, or at least has complex feelings about him. He's never had sex. He is so insecure that it is laughable.
We can only assume that Travis's dad shaped some of his perceptions of what it means to be a man. In the pilot, we have Coach Martinez honestly, if not cruelly, tell Jackie her worth is in her influence and that she is not particularly skilled at soccer. Coach Martinez's office has several pictures of his family, yet seems distant from his wife and Travis when they leave for nationals. We can see Travis's complex relationship with masculinity (misogyny with Nat's perceived sexual history, stoicism, and aggression to mask emotional distress), and can only assume that a stoic, critical, and distant father is one of the reasons for this. But we could also discuss 90s masculinity and cultural influence as well.
Travis was not (obviously written to be) athletically skilled as a kid, and is not mentioned to be on a sports team. He had a spinal fusion at 13, presumably due to some chronic health issue like scoliosis. His father invests time into the Yellowjackets team, and we see Ben describe them in flashbacks as monsters, so clearly there is some sort of reverence Coach Martinez has for ruthlessness and success. In the original script of episode 4 (I think), we see Travis described as a "sensitive kid trying hard not to be" (or something along those lines), and I can certainly see resentment building between Travis and the Yellowjackets as they represent everything his dad wanted him to be-- athletically skilled, successful, and cut throat. He is resistant to receiving help, outright lashes out in order to maintain this fragile identity as masculine and independent.
He has an interesting sibling relationship with Javi where he is simultaneously trying to force his own thoughts of their father onto him ("Dad was a dick") and protect him from the reality/brutality of their situation (does not tell Javi he dug up the body for the ring). Coach Martinez gives Javi gum for the flight, a gesture of care, and seemingly does not extend the same to Travis. We see Javi as innocent, naive, and artistic. He is presumably unaware of the marital problems in their family, while Travis is. Where Travis resents the Yellowjackets for the attention they receive from his father, he resents Javi because he is supported emotionally and allowed to be soft.
He values honesty, and the audience can see this in seasons one and two– Nat obscuring her relationship with Bobby Farleigh is the initial reason why they break up in 1x7, Nat planting Javi’s shorts is similarly a big point of contention. He is quick to project his own insecurities onto other people, namely Nat-- any skill or sexual experience she has is an attack on his worth as a man. He consistently sabotages his relationship with her by lashing out, not because Nat is doing anything wrong, but because he is afraid of being perceived as not good enough.
Travis’s arc throughout the show is interesting, especially because the audience sees Travis in season one obsessed with control of his own image, honesty, and power. By season two, he is willing to give in to spirituality-- in winter, he opens up to Lottie's "Wiccan bullshit", seeing ritual and belief as rejecting his own ego in a productive way. I have seen a good amount of people talk about how Travis's passivity in the second and third season is his way of protecting himself from the rest of the team, especially following his assault and almost murder in 1x9, but I think there is a little more nuance than just this. There is still an element of Travis seeking control within the routine of Lottie's spirituality. He cannot find Javi following the events of doomcoming, cannot find food in the winter months, cannot protect Shauna from the risk of childbirth, so he submits himself to drinking the tea Lottie prepares, praying, and ritual self harm.
Following Javi's death, we see Travis completely submit. He consumes his brother’s body not only to survive, but also to spiritually keep Javi with him. He eats Javi’s heart as a display of devotion, reverence, and attachment. His acceptance of Nat’s leadership comes from similar motivations, and this marks his almost complete relinquishment of autonomy within the group.
By season three, he is no longer hunting. He is completely detached from the team, past Lottie, Akilah, and the wilderness itself. He spends his time tripping on shrooms to “listen” when Lottie no longer can. It makes a lot of sense why fan opinion has gotten more positive– Travis this season is so passive that he becomes pathetic, both to the audience and the characters. Van, Tai, and Lottie each try to protect him, Akilah provides him with comfort. The rest of the group does not punish Travis for his lack of contribution as they did Jackie– they largely ignore him. And once his two main acts of autonomy (escaping with Kodiak, killing Lottie) fail, there is nothing left. He does not participate in the final hunt of Mari, and the group allows him to get drunk or high with no consequence. It is only when Travis is in Shauna's way that she cares about his lack of participation. The writers have officially connected the proud, aggressive season one Travis to what we know of him in the adult timeline– an isolated addict. He dies doing exactly what he did in the woods: trying to submit himself to meaning, to something bigger than himself, and dying for it.

I had a dumb thought today and I wanna rant about it
We all Saw that Cabin Guy appeared in Jackie's death dream correct?
Okey so my thought/question is: Do any of you think that maybe he appeared to the others Who died? (But like the ones that had a slow death because I know Cristal didn't got time to see him💀)
Like,Laura Lee looked at the passenger seat of the plane as it was burning and instead of seeing Leonard there was cabin guy sitting Next to her like "this is my plane bitch"?
Or when Javi was drowning do any of you think he Saw him Next to Natalie watching him go down?
And also,in the likely event that coach Ben is Next on the menú,do you think he'l see cabin guy too?
I wanna hear 'yalls opinions on this

yellowjackets theory!!!
honestly surprised nobody has said that the wilderness could be cabin guy yet?? in every ghost story ever ghosts are centered around "unfinished business" and cabin guy seems to have died under....mysterious circumstances to say the least. so if we go with that, especially considering hes nicknamed "the hunter" by both van and akilah. therefore...hunting? whats he hunting? anyone who comes through that cabin? this isnt a solid theory or anything, just something im surprised nobodys said given the fact that we know next to nothing about this guy? maybe he died of....something, and in vengence formed into an angry spirit?? and then the girls believing in "the wilderness"/cabin guy gave him more power, not that hes "real" per say, but that if you believe in something it sort of becomes real? im definitely team supernatural for yj, i cant excuse other tai because she doesnt fit the criteria for DID (as far as i can tell- and im talking more about childhood trauma here) and also the snow falling on jackie really didnt seem like an accident. while i HIGHLY doubt the showrunners will say anything explicit about it being cabin guy, given they want to keep the whole "is it supernatural or are they tripping" thing, if we get the unreleased cabin guy episode from s2, it might hint towards him being the wilderness? i am uncertain but we shall see....

Kodiak is a survivor of Cabin guy
Yes I wrote what you read.
And this is gonna get messier so im gonna try to explain myself as best as I can:
First of all I am a firm believer that cabin guy was on some shady shit when he was alive (Cult leader)
And second of all I am fascinated by Kodiak's character mostly bc he seems to be just as shady and I also have a big imagination so im gonna tell you all the evidence I have to think the way im thinking:
1- Kodiak's backstory: I want you all to take a moment to think what the sentence ''Went to kill a buck and never got out'' (I think it was like that) could possibly mean, because yeah he probably went with the intention of killing a buck that day but he DID got out of there so what if he saw something he shouldn't have? And what if then certain cabin cult decided to kidnap him until he finally got out of there?
2- The scars: I know he already said how he got those scars (I don't entiretly believe it tbh) and I saw a few people on Reddit theorizing that he maybe has the symbol carved on his body (Which would be fucking awesome in my opinion) But I honestly think there's more than just that (Also a few people said that maybe he got mauled by something just like Van with the wolves and I may not be a doctor but in my opinion those scars look a little too perfectly straight to be that)
I mean look at them:
Tumblr media
I don't know don't listen to me too much on this one
And last but not least... (And this is the one that made me question things the most)
3- HIS FUCKING REACTION TO THE GIRLS:
LOOK AT THIS MAN'S FACE!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Excuse the quality I got them from a tiktok)
Hannah and Edwin are surprised, they are scared! Which is absolutly normal but then there's this motherfucker without a trace of surprise in his face! In fact I dare to say that he was even expecting this! (Mostly bc of how nonchalantly he said to Edwin that he would not recommend getting close to people this far from civilization) He was expecting to see people doing weird shit in the woods but he looks CONFUSED you wanna know why? Because those are not the people doing weird shit in the woods that he was expecting to see! Those are not the people he knows!
What am I trying to say with this word vomit?: That I fully believe that Cabin guy was some sort of cult leader when he was alive and that Kodiak was either part of said cult or someone that was meant to be sacrificed by said cult but he somehow escaped
Okay so that's basically it lmao I hope yall enjoyed this!!! :D Im very open for discussions and thoughts abt this theory
(I've seen a lot of people say that he's probably cabin guy's son but I wanted to give my own theory about it while I wait for Friday lol)

Mari headcanons because I miss her so bad
Middle child but the eldest daughter which is why she is the way she is
Only joined the Yellowjackets because she thought Jackie was really cool, she had no idea she was actually decent at soccer
She has a pet cat that she loves more than anything
Not only eldest daughter but only daughter but she's got a sister-like relationship with all her female cousins and her mom is her best friend
She and Van used to pull pranks and commit really hard to every bit. Sometimes they'd loop Nat in and the three of them would fuck with the entire team
Her favorite color is lavender
Absolutely hates coffee but drinks it every day because she's always tired
Constantly late for school
Cooks for her family because both her parents work somewhat late. She came to enjoy it but still complains because she feels like it
She'd start rumors about anyone who fucked with someone on the team. No one knew it was her, but if one of the Yellowjackets had a rumor started about them, they knew the next day that the person who started it would have something 10x worse said about them
Very good at English and History but hates Science with a passion

I just had a thought about the symbol.
I read on the Yellowjackets Wiki that they described the symbol as resembling "an impaled female figure, with a hook coming out of the bottom". Which, if you look at the symbol, I can now definitely see. It's kind of like the symbols you find on bathroom stalls except without the legs.
Tumblr media
I dunno if anyone else drew this conclusion and I'm just slow, but who else do we know was impaled and hooked up to a rope after her death?
Tumblr media
And something I also found deeply fascinating was how in season 2, when Shauna, Natalie, Taissa and Van show up at Lottie's community, we get a shot from up high where we see her walking towards them and we see the symbol etched into the ground. What is fascinating about this is that Lottie walks up to the girls starting from the top of the symbol (the circle) towards the bottom. To me this just symbolises the fact that no matter who the Antler Queen is or was, Lottie has always been the one in charge, the one who brought them all to this point in one way or another.
(I'm not necessarily meaning to imply that Lottie is to blame for everything that has happened in the show and is the reason why most of the girls go off the hook, like Shauna, in season 3 but I definitely think Lottie opened the path in some way and heavily nudged the others in that direction, especially in seasons 1 and 2)
