hebe cuff (march, 2023)
sterling silver, brass, faux gold leaf
made as part of my end of second year uni collection, which focused on personal interaction and memory with plant life, specifically the contrast between fragility and longevity.
the hebe cuff itself was a response to early interactions with flora, one of which for me and I’m sure many others, was making flower crowns/bracelets. taking the simple joy that was found in binding flowers together to wear until they fell apart, and making a version that will last as long as the memory does.
also, hi! long time no see 🌟 i finished my degree at the very end of last year (woohoo) and am finally getting round to catching this account up with some pieces I’ve made over the last year or so (like this one!). hope you all enjoy <3

Hebe, the genus of flowers, were named after Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth. Hebe was thought to be able to restore youthfulness to those with her blessing.
When I began making these flowers in February 23’ it was in relation to a uni project surrounding the links between plant life and memory. How we interact with flora, play and display, destroy and immortalise. It’s a common whimsy especially among young girls to make flower crowns and bracelets, though they often go limp and decay within a day or so. In response to the strong memories tied to these whimsy’s, how long lasting they are in relation to a short lived joy, I began to create a flower cuff that showed homage to what’s often the first jewellery a child makes. A flower bracelet that wouldn’t break down.
I was unaware at the time that hebe is the goddess of youth with the power to grant immortality. How peculiar that out of all the many flowers I could have chosen to recreate in metal, it was one with pre-existing ties to immorality and youthfulness. It feels sometimes other, older, beings are at work within art, acting as a guide for the subconscious.

i seem to have a constant longing to revisit the past.
i experience this in my close listening of others stories, in my collecting of objects. the is a constant battle between the bombardment of foul memories, seeking a permanent hold in my mind, constantly pushed away, with the voluntary leaping into pools of those sweeter.
i see links in this, between my love for fiction and slow media. it is the same, in a sense. i believe when you can look at your old memories the same way you would a book it makes life more interesting, fuller. adding details in half sunk mindscapes, the same way an author would decorate a new setting.

i remember these mountains. whose tops where shrouded in mist most winter mornings. whose trees lit up golden green in the evening sun. i see them everytime i come home, in cloud or glowing light. a setting fit for magical lands, rooted in my memory. imagine my surprise upon realising this skyline didn't exist, at least not from the viewpoint i was imagining it. yet i see the hills the same way each time i picture them, fading into the distance, fabricated or merged perhaps from many viewpoints

when making the cogs for the automaton, i was thinking about old school toy cogs, and the types of wheels and bobbin top imagery i saw in fiction growing up
