BIOGRAPHY /

Tasteless. Everything becomes tasteless and chewing becomes a chore. He doesn’t bother himself with what that implies, ignores situational subtext even though he’s always prided himself in being a man that knows what to look for, knows how to read between the lines, find the metaphorical hole in the wall, tear in the ceiling. You could call him cocky, confident, or simply self-aware; all interchangeable words at the end of the day. But that’s not what matters. What matters is that he’s hunched over the toilet bowl of his one bedroom apartment, more convenient workplace than home, retching up bile and soju and too many servings of jajjangmyeon. The aftertaste lingers on the back of his pearly white teeth, sticks to the roof of his mouth even after he tries to wash it out at the sink. His eyes look hollow in the bathroom mirror and his lips are cracked, flakes of dead skin peeling away from raw flesh. Splashes his face with lukewarm water and calls it food poisoning. He grabs his phone off the night stand on his way out of his room, opens the living area windows before collapsing across the plush sofa sitting square in the middle of the room. His mother’s ringtone plays on the other end of the line. One of her favorite songs. No answer, so he tries the number again. The silence in the room feels deafening. His head hurts and he blames it on the alcohol, although that doesn’t quite make sense. He falls asleep on the sofa after two tablets of ibuprofen with the TV humming in the background. “I’m transferring you to Nohwa-ri. Your flight’s first thing tomorrow morning.” The echo of his open palms making contact with the polished oak of their desk bounces off the room’s spotless walls; “You’re transferring me fucking where?-” “Nohwa, a small island village off the coast of gangwon-do, where you won’t cause me more trouble than you’re worth.” Daewon’s fingers curl up into fists, teeth grinding together under pursed lips before he bares them in a snarl. “I do my job well and you fucking know it.” A brief pause. His initial rage dissipates in the silence, replaced by something colder, quieter. “If you’re not going to print the story then I know a lot more people who will.” “Wrong.” He jolts awake from his nightmare (can you even call it a nightmare when it’s more so a memory?) to the incessant ringing of his front door, understandably rather annoyed and expression mutating into a scowl when the ringing gives way to heavy fists banging against the polished wood. Evening sunlight filters in from the open windows and he needs to give his eyes time to adjust. The banging gets louder.  He really can’t bring himself to give a damn. Ignoring the familiar voice laced with worry drifting in from the other side of the door, he takes a swig of water from the bottle sitting at his feet before getting up, taking his time with the locks to his apartment. A few seconds later, he greets his only co-worker on this god-forsaken lump of volcanic rock with a sheepish grin, disarmingly boyish. He’d always had a gift for charm.

“My bad. Must have missed the alarm.”

BIOGRAPHY /

“how could you be so irresponsible jiaqi?”

the combination of words cut at the surface of her skin. they penetrate deeper into her freckled skin as she pictures the face behind them. splitting open old healing scars, ripping them at their seems. she bites back any noise that could fill her mother with some wave of satisfaction.

the phone goes silent as jiaqi’s grip tightens around it. she tries to steady herself as the silence gnaws at her body. she tries to secure herself as she feels herself beginning to bleed. she tries to push back the mass forming in her throat as her eyes well up. she tries to root herself down before the second impact.

but jiaqi had never been good at that part. suddenly, and yet always, becoming very unsteady when it came to the whims of her mother.

“marriage is a sacred thing,” her mother’s slurred speech chimes in “don’t you know that?”

a ragged sigh escapes from her lips as she lets her hand fall from her ear. phone still clutched in her hands, knuckles still white from bracing herself. it was a mistake calling her mother. somewhere deep in her gut she had known that. she always had. but the heart is much more optimistic. it longs for the comfort of a mother. she longs for a woman who is no longer there.

it all feels too familiar.

she lies back fully on her bed. tears slip from the sides of her eyes. she’s quick to catch them before they roll completely past her temples. quick to hide this weak side of her. eyes glued to the ceiling. she tries to focus on it through her blurred vision. she tries to focus on her breathing, rushed and messy as her emotions pour out.

jiaqi jiaqi jiaqi

the phone calls to her, steadily growing in sound each time. jiaqi let’s out a steady breath before placing the phone back to her ear.

“yes i’m listening.”

her mother groans. she knows jiaqi is lying but she doesn’t have the energy to argue. her daughter caught her at a bad time. sleep is on right on her heels. a side affect of day drinking. another pause pushes itself into the middle of the conversation. the two women don’t know how to interact anymore. a side affect of their years apart.

“did you love him, at least?”

“no, not in the slightest.”

“so… you lost your job for a man you didn’t even like?”

jiaqi can tell now her mother is relishing in the moment. she can feel her joy radiating through the phone. she can feel her smile. her laughter. jiaqi had done something that she couldn’t blame on her mother. something that was entirely her daughters fault.

mature little jiaqi slept with a married man. responsible little jiaqi lost her job. know-it-all little jiaqi made a mistake.

“mom,” jiaqi is quick to change the subject “i just called to let you know we’re moving.” “where?” “korea.” again her roots wrap themselves down covering her bed, she needs to be steady. “korea?” it’s questioning yet mocking in it’s tone. “dad said that maybe xuelin or zhenqing could help me get a job there.” her mother is silent again. all relishing or joy is lost now. “i just thought a change of scene could be good for junqing too.” the daughter pauses letting her mother get her scoffs and swears in. “well, we will see how that goes,” she hears her mother laugh “if you thought i was a terrible parent i can’t wait to hear how your father does.” “i never said that.” “i’m just saying.”

the sound of her mother struggling to activate her lighter interrupt her speech. jiaqi waits patiently for her mother to finish. she pictures her hands shaking, cigarette placed daintily between her index and middle finger. a collection of bottles of alcohol forming around her. she looks so much bigger in stature and presence in her memories. her mother clears her throat.

“i’m just saying, at least i had the decency to never run out on you kids when we divorced.” “we’re not staying with dad.” “who is taking care of my child then?” “i am.” “well,” the exhale of smoke can be heard “as long as he doesn’t almost die in the woods again it should be fine then.”

the line goes dead. jiaqi doesn’t remember after if she ended it out of anger or if her mother had done it purposely.

ANNOUNCEMENT /

hey guys!

just wanted to hit you with a quick announcement. firstly, we’ll go with the obvious, we have new graphics! the nature of the roleplay of course will be the same but in a chance to reinvigorate things around here the admins decided to go a new route with the graphics and we really hope you all like them!

secondly, again we just wanted to thank you all for working with us and bearing with all the changes made and we appreciate you continuing to be active. however we just wanted to remind that while this week was a free week from activity, next week there will be regular activity checks again. if you need a hiatus please contact the main and please keep in mind that memes do not count towards activity.

how active is the dash?

it’s a little slower right now, though i’m more willing to attribute that to a holiday this week and people being on vacation and also the residual effect of the admin change but the dash still moves a decent amount every day!
