I love??? Vale?? so?? Much?? Like they’re soft and I ADORE THEM. Like I love how gentle and caring they are? It’s such a unique take on V as a character and I absolutely adore how they’re still CAPABLE but they have a gentleness to them that I’ve seen in SO FEW people in the cyberpunk universe and I love it so much ok?? The realization ALONE was horrific. No one really had a good side in NIGHT CITY, but everyone had a different approach. Some people could handle faking being nice, but as far as he KNEW he’d never really caught a glimpse of ANY particular kindness from her ( AT LEAST not directed toward him or anyone he knew ). Arms cross over his chest as he leans his back against the HOOD OF HIS CAR, furrowing his brow at her.

THERE WASN’T MUCH to be said about their interactions, IRONICALLY enough Vera tended to mesh better with people who were more NATIVELY from Night City. THE STREET PEOPLE. He’d resolved that he’d always feel out of place given that he was NOMAD, one could try as they might they’d never be able to SEVER their roots entirely.

“God well WHOEVER that’s gonna be direct at I feel REAL fuckin’ bad for cuz I’m sure that’s gonna look like a damn SHIT STORM.”

Eyes roll behind tinted glasses as he presses up against the hood before shaking his head. He needed to make a QUICK pitstop ( he’d been made DD by the whole ordeal given that he LIKED driving anyway ) but since their pause she seemed to SOUR in mood.

“Just whatever the fuck you do, don’t you turn that shit on me or I’ll fuckin’ LEAVE your ass here, ASK my fuckin’ sister, SCHOOL bus rules apply when ‘ol Vance is the driver. NO fuckin’ with the driver. Last time Vera got testy with me I DITCHED in the middle of Heywood.”

He never understood the BOLDNESS people had with what they said. Most people were close to their chest about things, and when she speaks, those words are PERPLEXING to him. Those belonged in the ears of a CONFIDANT ( i.e. not him––HE BARELY KNEW HER ). In the aftermath of Jackie’s DEATH and how destroyed his sister was APPARENTLY they’d met but he’s hardly one to dredge that back up.

HE DIDN’T REMEMBER HER.

Normally that would be chalked up to some COY excuse about her not being memorable, but that’s a lie. HE WAS hardly entirely there himself, so if they’d met it would’ve really been IN PASSING. He leans back, a drag of his cigarette taken as he blows out the smoke into the open air and leans back on his palm.

He’s not even sure how to respond, THE BASELINE with people in night city ( especially solos who had to work together ) was that you kept your mouth shut and MAYBE you wouldn’t be viciously extorted for everything you were worth. She seems troubled, but there wasn’t exactly a great deal of CONTEXT for him to work with so instead he takes another drag trying to piece together what might work best to say.

It’s not exactly COMFORTING, but really the historical events showed he really wasn’t good at comforting the VAST majority of people. Especially not as an outsider looking in.

That’s a stupid question and he KNOWS it. He’s hardly one to throw stones, but it’s a TAD perplexing that the one thing someone would consider an emotional support item happens to be a dangerously sharp object created for the specific purpose of hurting others. 

There’s an odd duality there that strikes Vance but he’s not exactly sure what, so he instead he cants his head to the side, picking one of the knives up and feeling the weight balance in his hand. A little too light for his liking, but he’s used to FULL BLADES rather than swords. Not that he’s complaining, knives worked for some AND NOT SO MUCH for others he’d argue.

“Listen, there’s a HUNDRED different things you coulda chosen, so I’m just MORBIDLY curious to know why precisely you chose a KNIFE or a collection of’em as EMOTIONAL SUPPORT, like what the fuck does that even look like...you snuggle a bag full of’em when you’re feelin’ down?”

They’re all standing side by side. It’s nothing especially SERIOUS, but it was meant to honor the sacrifice she’d made. Rogue’s choice was her own, and Vance could respect that she’d live the way she ended up passing. On her own terms, but that didn’t mean that it wouldn’t have been hard for Declan to accept. ROGUE was still his mom, through and through.

He & Vera stand on either side of him, their hands holding his as they stand before Rogue’s grave. They’re still not entirely sure what exactly will be coming in this NEW DAWN of Night City but the best they can hope for is that she’ll rest in peace. If nothing else, the woman had suffered enough for ten lifetimes. 

IT’S OVER ISN’T IT?

The legacy of the OLD NIGHT CITY HEROES are essentially gone. Johnny would argue Kerry’s sold out that’s for sure, as did Nancy from what Vera had said. She’d stood alone. Johnny was gone, but Rogue had managed to keep on the path to greatness as it seemed their little group had always planned. But it was the end of an era as it were, and now there was no going back. A small frown plasters across his features as Declan seems so DETACHED.

“...Yeah.”

It’s all he really can say. ROGUE WAS GONE. No one could get answers from her anymore and as painful as it was, it’s hard to pretend like in HER HONOR, he wouldn’t fight the fight she & Johnny had started so long ago.
