I haven't seen Chai An in a single scene since she was shipped off to the house in the outskirts to recover.
I obviously don't ship the leads rn. But like Goddamn. Chemistry so strong that they remove the character from the storyline. Hate what happened here. Nobody is admitting that Fu Yunxi's main competitor was a woman who was Zhang Hanyan's bodyguard and best friend. Why would Hanyan say no to a real marriage? She's seen true devotion. A woman was ready to die for her. The writers are making her say that she thinks feelings don't stay the same. Babygirl, a woman was ready to die for you, a man waited all his life for your mom, a woman held on to some very serious feelings for your mom all her life. This show is about women. Her mom's most compelling relationship is also with a woman (the Imperial Consort). I don't buy these male leads in their lives at all. I think they are supposed to be coconspirators and (in modern times) would be colleagues but not lovers. I don't see it.
This whole show is about the older generations choosing the wrong person. Will Hanyan repeat the same mistake? I hate that.
I love that the Yanxi has already physically fought with Chai An and lost. I think its an important narrative element. Hanyan protecting Chai An from Yanxi is also pretty important. If Yanxi was faced with the actual competition for Hanyan's love, he would lose. That's what the metaphor sounds to me.
I guess lame (no pun intended) marriages are a hereditary disease in this story.
Side note- I actually love seeing the conflicted sort of microexpression on the ML's face when they were talking about her mom and the imperial consort and the few conversations he had with Chai An. He looks to be absorbing so much info all the time. Really well acted. I was on the fence when I first saw him, but he sold it to me.
Also I really loved the actress who played Chai An. I've seen her play a ballerina earlier, she always brings an interesting dimension to her characters. I would love to see her in more dramas. She really acted with her body language and expressions this time. I loved her chemistry with the FL.
I have decided what lens I'm going to view this show with. I don't care if it'll never work out. I will die on this hill.

Oddly I see him as a great visual for a happy young Rhaegar Targaryen who happily played music in taverns and then gave away the money to the poor children.

Journal Excerpt: 08/28/23
Life feels the most fulfilling after great fear and pain. Yet, once I've re-experienced life, I'm quick to forget my trials. And I again mistaken things I'm privileged to partake in as my basic rights and lose the great joy and satisfaction of living. When I'm sick, I long to live; and when I'm alive, I long for silence. I wish to break my cycle. I do not want to take my life for granted.

at some point you have to realize that you actually have to read to understand the nuance of anything. we as a society are obsessed with summarization, likely as a result of the speed demanded by capital. from headlines to social media (twitter being especially egregious with the character limit), people take in fragments of knowledge and run with them, twisting their meaning into a kaleidoscope that dilutes the message into nothing. yes, brevity is good, but sometimes the message, even when communicated with utmost brevity, requires a 300 page book. sorry.
