Reactions to tragedy
In real life, pretty much everybody reacts to tragedy differently. So why is it that every author has their pet reaction to tragedy that all their characters use? Not only is it unrealistic, but it takes away the chance for the characters’ different reactions to reveal things about themselves.
Possible reactions to tragedy (not an exhaustive list):
Distracting oneself with mindless activities
Distracting oneself with others’ humor
Distracting oneself by making jokes
Distracting oneself by reading/watching/playing stories
Distracting oneself with hard mental work
Distracting oneself with hard physical work
Distracting oneself with creative endeavors
Distracting oneself by chatting with friends about normal things
Talking to friends about the tragedy
Talking to authority figures about the tragedy
Talking anonymously with strangers about the tragedy (if possible)
Getting wrapped up in others’ problems
Staying unusually silent
Screaming
Crying loudly
Crying silently
Doing everything possible not to cry
Pacing
Taking unhealthy risks
Going for revenge against whoever one can blame
Punching random objects
Throwing random objects
Lashing out against friends and family members
Trying to prevent a similar tragedy from happening
Eating more than usual
Not eating
Taking mind-altering substances
Getting in unhealthy relationships
Isolating oneself
Obsessing over routine
Numbness combined with apathy
Numbness combined with going through one’s normal motions
Trying to get things back the way they were
Denial
No reaction at first but a reaction hits later in greater force
No reaction at all. Emotions relating to the tragedy just fail to load. Note that this can happen to anybody and does not mark a character as a sociopath.
Characters can have more than one reaction at the same time, one reaction after another, or different reactions to different tragedies.

some writer snob somewhere: Do not start sentences with But or And because doing so is grammatically incorrect.
me, writing my fic: But I don’t care. And you can’t stop me.

hot take: the problem isnt the manic pixie dream girl. its the boring ass moody emotional leech guy she always gets paired with. we need more manic pixie dream characters. just give them partners who are as great as them or let them be happy alone! no more smart, beautiful, optimistic, kind girls getting paired with actual mosquitoes of men!

“if it’s not plot relevant, cut it!!” is such awful writing advice
if JRR Tolkien had cut every bit of Lord of the Rings that wasn’t directly related to the central plot, it would have been just one book long, COLOURLESS and DULL AS DIRT.
all the little worldbuilding/character details are what draw you in and give the central plot weight, FOOL

I was reading my writing today, and let me tell you, it may not be good, plot is not the best, and characters are a bit stereotypical, but boy do I have fun writing it

give your autistic characters emotional range, you cowards.
not to b autistic about it or anything but i’ve noticed that the rpc is mostly peopled by allistics.
i’ve also noticed that when characters are autistic, they usually seem to be of a certain type: ‘Cold,’ Quiet, Likes Numbers, What Are Feelings Does Not Compute Error 404. furthermore, that seems to be just about the only criteria needed to meet in order to headcanon a character as autistic. even furthermore, seeing those characters over and over as the only representation of autism is uhhhhhhh kind of boring and largely rooted in autism through the allistic eye, ie negatively. this Autistic Character Mould people are putting ocs and canons alike into needs to be broken up and diversified. here’s how.
first of all, you, the presumably allistic writer and / or character, need to heed these four ( 4 ) factors before i continue:
while those kinds of autistic people, ie the quiet ones ones that like numbers and not people do exist, autism is called a spectrum and with good reason. more importantly, autism does not exist in a vacuum. an autistic person may have all of those traits, a few of them, or none at all.
also, those traits are not solely autistic ones. a person can like numbers and not people, have issues expressing emotions and keep to themselves and be allistic.
cold unfeeling autistic characters are usually written with very little or no insight into the neurological condition itself, which makes for a shit portrayal. this post should not be your only character building source for autism. as you should with every other foray into a subject you’re unfamiliar with, for the love of the GODS, do ya gotdamn research.
if you have a Gasping Need to make your Cold Unfeeling Machine character autistic or conversely, make your autistic a Cold Unfeeling Machine, do it, i suppose ( sarcasm, ) but think about where your decision for making them autistic comes from and why you want to do it.
but queen morgaine, how am i going to write my autistic character then? fear not, reader, here is a list of lesser-recognised autistic things you can and are encouraged to apply to your autistic character to make for a more realistic, nuanced, and overall more human and less robotic portrayal.
allistics are allowed and encouraged to reblog.

New Writeblr Tag
Heya I’m Ronan,,, I’m a nonbinary teenage writer who really just needs a place to talk about writing on a blog that’s not my main?? So I’m just gonna use this tag to introduce myself lol
1. How did you find out about Writeblr?
Some of the tags came up on my main’s dash and I was like hey that’s pretty neat, so I followed a lot of the blogs, but now I kinda want one myself so here we are
2. What genres do you write in?
Oh uhhhh it depends?? Usually realistic or some sort of urban fantasy or sci-fi, but I’ve done full on fantasy a few times too
3. What are your preferred writing tense, point of view, and category of story? (Children’s, YA, NA, Adult, etc.)
I do past for longer projects and sometimes present for short stories. Third person for longer, sometimes first for shorter,,, catagory is usually YA cos that’s what I tend to read
4. Are you a plotter, pantser, or plantser?
Plotter usually but I tend to stray from it a LOT
5. Are you a self-published, published, or yet-to-be published?
Lol I haven’t even thought about publishing yet oops
6. What publishing company, literary agent, and/or printing company are you represented by or use? If you’re not yet published, what is your dream publishing house and/or literary agent?
See question number five
7. What Writeblr related posts can we expect to find on your channel?
I really don’t know yet?? Like I don’t think it’s gonna have a super specific theme it’s just gonna be there yknow
8. When did you start writing?
Oh uhhhh I think I was in fourth grade?? The first thing I can remember is writing a moshi monsters fanfic and it was a murder mystery
9. What was the first story you ever wrote?
Moshi monsters fanfic
10. What authors have inspired your writing the most?
Oh hmm. I’m not actually sure??
11. Do you schedule your writing sessions or simply get to writing whenever you can find the time?
Whenever I find the time tbh,,, school makes stuff hard for scheduling
12. Do you type on a computer, typewriter, write everything out by hand, or use a blend of those? And where do you write in general?
Computer and by hand. I want a typewriter for the aesthetic though
13. What are you most looking forward to now that you’re a part of Writerblr?
Not torturing my main followers with my writing ramblings probably
So yeah that’s that I guess
