nothing funnier to me than when AI does math wrong. like I get why it happens, it's a language model that's treating the numbers you feed it as words rather than integers and then giving you an answer based on how those words typically appear in a block of text instead of actually performing a calculation. but the one thing computers are genuinely incredible at. you fucked up a perfectly good calculator is what you did, look at it it's got hallucinations

I love niche courses because most courses will be like "we are using this book last updated in 2021 as our main text" and niche courses will be like "we are using a book from 1884 so ignore how crunchy this pdf is"

I agree! When we talk about the beauty of math, we absolutely get caught up in the big things. Those are beautiful too of course, but even the most mundane basic math is awe-inspiring, I think.

Like even simple addition. There is the condensing of information, the fact that we can turn two numbers into one number, but also it's as pure as the act of discovery can get, transforming the knowledge you have into the knowledge you need, putting the things you know into a form you can easily carry with you. Even simple math lets us manipulate and prioritize information in really cool ways!

Math is both the poetry and the pen, so to speak! You're absolutely right, its such a strange and unique thing!
