hermes in hadestown is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. a tortured narrator. a little *too* reliable. incredibly aware of exactly what is happening at any given moment, vaguely spoiling it for you in the beginning, despairing every second of it. but ultimately motivated to continue to tell the story over and over and over with a smiling face for the sake of the audience, and for the sake of the characters themselves, singing it again to keep them alive. knowing how it will end, but singing it again so that the cycle may restart and eurydice may come back to life. enduring the misery of it all, over and over, holding the knowledge of what will come to pass but continuing anyway to see orpheus happy just one more time before it all goes down in flames again.

Ragatha's characterization just hits so hard in the best way. And I love that she's not portrayed as like, that overly simplified version of what people think it means to be overly nice and a people pleaser. Like her problem isn't that she wants to control everyone or needs them to be happy 24/7, the problem is that she blames herself for the actions other people take, even if they are completely out of her control, because in her mind, she just, didn't try hard enough.

Her blaming herself for not partnering up with Pomni and for Jax pushing everyone away feels so real. Like somehow, no matter what, it's always YOUR fault. YOU should've done better.

it means so much to me that Ragatha, someone who notoriously struggles with feeling like she‘s let down everybody, gets told by Kinger how she had changed his entire worldview for the better

how fucking cathartic must that have felt dude? to be like, told that you are the reason someone’s life improved, when your someone who struggles INTENSELY with feeling like everyone hates you. it must’ve felt fucking GREAT, like not JUST to have your worst fears turned out to be false, but learn YOU ARE A LEADING FACTOR FOR THEIR IMRPOVMENT??
