my (overexplained) mihael keehl / mello no kira au & headcanons ! _(:3 」∠)_ tw (warning before the hc too!): sexual themes (not the good kind....), mentions of sexual assault and prostitution, ALOT of mentions of weed and alcohol abuse

i like to think of him as russian and german! as we all know, the wammy boys do not have canonical origins outside of living in the uk, so it's best to turn to L for things like this. it makes sense for L's successors to have ethnic similarities to him, as they are meant to be modelled after him. mello has the naturally light hair that is common in slavic countries... and the only slavic country mentioned in L's ethnicity would be russia! and if you look at where his first name comes from, it’s german!

similar to the manga, i see him and matt running away from the orphanage around the ages of 14-15. he’s tired of being compared to near— tired of feeling inferior— so he packs a bag with every document related to him he can find and leaves with his best friend. as soon as they get to france, they never go back to the uk. they spend a few years travelling east, scamming people out of their money so they can afford meals, turning to petty theft when they have to.

they live in kazakhstan, where they are… homeless for the most part. there’s an older woman that lets them sleep and eat there during the long, cold winters— mello was going to reject her offer at first, but matt said yes faster than he could say no— but they don’t really have anywhere to stay outside of that. they have places to go, obviously, they’ve been there for a while and know some people that’ll let them use their kitchens or their bathrooms, but they sleep on sidewalks and park benches for the most part.

they run a business selling edibles together (brownies, because mello likes the smell of the chocolate). people let them use their kitchens in exchange for some product. it was matt’s idea (all credit to @lizgurt for coming up with that), and he’s the one that gets most of their clients. mello handles the money and comes along when it’s time to make a sale, but matt does most of the work. it makes a decent amount of money, enough to allow mello to serve cunt in his iconic outfits, at least.

he tried to be a detective, he’s smart enough for it, but… he got bored. in reality, the only reason he ever wanted to be a detective was so he could prove that he’s better than near. but now he’s not with near anymore, there’s no point. you could say that he just wants to be the best in general, but if near’s not there, there’s no way to tell if he’s the best or not. either way, it doesn’t work.

he never gets a real job, even when he’s a far into his twenties. there’s nothing stimulating enough to keep him entertained. even if he decided that he suddenly wanted to live a proper life, he probably wouldn’t be able to get a job easily because of his record of quitting within a week. he refuses to work at a fast food place or some random retail outlet, he’s far above that.

so, he just decides to live how he wants to. having fun even though a part of him feels like there’s something wrong on the inside. he and matt go out, make fun of people in ugly outfits at packed clubs and and laugh enough to make their heads spin. it’s nice.

(tw, sexual themes!) he spends most of his nights in kazakhstanian bars talking to older men that probably have wives in hopes they'll buy him a drink and something to eat... which they do end up doing most of the time. it's gross, he doesn't like doing it, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. he'd rather not let matt and himself die, so he has to do something.

(tw, prostitution!) it's disgusting, but he's had to be on his knees in a bathroom stall in front of someone's drunk dad when times get rough. when their edible business isn't making money, when flirting isn't enough to feed them. it earns him enough money for a couple of meals, enough to keep the both of them fed when until their business is back in order.

he drinks a lot. maybe too much. he wouldn’t have even considered it a few years ago, when he still wanted to be a detective. he had to stay healthy, had to stay clean. but now he doesn’t. so he uses extra money to buy a bottle so he doesn’t have to think. thinking is heavy, he thought too hard for 15 years straight and he just cant handle it anymore. if it weren’t for matt, he would probably be dying in an alley somewhere due to alcohol poisoning.

speaking of it, that is how he dies. he doesn’t live past the age of 28. normally, alcohol poisoning wears off within a day or two. but this time, it’s different. kazakhstan winters are cold, cold enough to get mello sick despite his layers of clothing and protection. being ill and experiencing alcohol poisoning isn’t necessarily the best thing that could happen to someone, and by the time he realises his symptoms he already knows he’s going to die. so he and matt sit down in between a bar and a hotel and talk until his eyelids feel too heavy. they talk about near, all of their good memories together, say their “i love you”s and share one last drink. there aren’t any broken sobs or anything like that. shit happens, especially to them, and this is just one of those things. he lived a happy life, he was free for a long time, and that’s enough for him to die peacefully.
