Goal of Swap!Sans’s FIGHT with Frisk/Chara - keep them in Snowdin because Paps is responsible for their safety

Non-Swap-verse Sanses (HorrorTale excluded) are more likely to actually befriend humans while UnderGround than Swap-verse Sanses despite seeming less social. If Paps makes the promise to protect a human then Sans takes it upon himself to eliminate the human if they become a danger to his brother. So he distances himself from the human to prevent growing attached in case he needs to step in. Bit softer with children, though.

Swap!RiverPerson meets Undyne because Papyrus panicks when RP sneezes from the cold…and does a terrible job of trying to lie his way through a “hypothetical” question. Undyne already knew about RP’s existence because of the cameras, though.

Any romance between a Swap-verse Sans and a human would have to be post-Barrier or an extreme slow-burn with Sans being in denial so much as actively trying to smother his budding feelings before they reach fruition.

The Multiverse Migration

I love skeleharem fics.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut you gotta admit, it seems a little short-sighted to go falling in love with a gaggle of skelemen when they’re all actively trying to leave. Like, polyamory is becoming more common in skeleharem fics because nobody wants to actually choose any of the skeletons over their brother and/or alternative selves, but that means that you, the Reader, are entering a relationship with several individuals who plan to go their separate ways into DIFFERENT PLANES OF EXISTENCE.

Even without the polyamory angle, if you choose someone that didn’t come from the world that you already have a life in, one of you is going to have to make a very difficult decision.

Some fics have given the skeletons other excuses to flex their science muscles by keeping an eye on interdimensional mishaps (usually somehow related to whatever brought them all into the same world, to begin with), which--I’ll admit--does provide a reason for them to keep doing what they’re doing without necessarily wanting to leave as well as some interesting plot potential. Personally, though, I would like to see a skeleharem fic where the skeletons in question have more reasons make new lives where they are than just being stuck or liking something about the new locale (including the Reader).

I once considered writing a scene where a couple of Sanses, whilst still in their separate universes of origin, get in contact with each other to discuss the upcoming move that would result in the potential set-up for a skeleharem fic (that I never had any intentions of actually writing, sorry~). The scene would discuss these points:

The skelebros of UnderSwap, SwapFell and UnderFell are all migrating to the world of UnderTale.

In UnderSwap, the skelebros are pretty much the only survivors. US!Papyrus doesn’t like to think about whatever happened, while US!Sans simultaneously doesn’t want to talk about it in front of any Papyri and refuses to leave his Papyrus’s side for longer than a couple minutes at a time.

In SwapFell, everyone’s pretty much alive, but SF!Toriel is considerably stricter in how the Underground is run, more invested in the prospect of war and downright ruthless with preparing her own people for combat when compared to UF!Asgore. The SwapFell skelebros are technically under less immediate duress than the Swap or Fell bros, but SF!Sans still thinks the move would be best for his Papyrus’s safety. SF!Paps (being a Papyrus and considering that I believe all the AU characters should be the same at SOUL-level) just couldn’t bring himself to keep his mouth shut around their version of Muffet or Undyne, who wants to go with him but won’t leave without Alphys, who wants to do whatever makes Undyne happy but is conflicted about leaving Catty and Bratty behind, etc, etc. The scene in question would be SF!Sans and UT!Sans discussing how many people could be brought over and how to talk SF!Paps down to a nice, manageable number, since SF!Sans is having a difficult time convincing him to just pack up and go.

In UnderFell, Toriel and Undyne are dead, resulting in a Mettaton Ending. But in UnderFell. (Regardless of if you headcanon UF!Mettaton character as a more homicidal and sadistic version of his Tale counterpart or as a hated and abused outlet of the Underground’s aggression, the result of him suddenly having so much power and using it in the manner described in that ending of UnderTale is not pretty.)

Nothing against the other AUs--I love a lot of them!--but I tend to mentally organize the AUs by their relationships to these main four worlds and ever since I saw the different versions of NyuBlackNeko’s Mob AU, I just can’t picture a multiverse situation where both UnderSwap and UnderFell exist but SwapFell and four variations of every other AU don’t (like in @optima-chama’s remake of It Feels Better When I’m Dancing or this DanceTale pic that made me cackle when I saw it).

(Well...technically I can imagine UnderSwap and UnderFell or UnderTale and SwapFell existing if the other two don’t, but that kinda limits what other AUs make sense...)

That’s a lot of skelebros to keep track of.

Pile on every AU you find interesting in groups of four variations of each to keep that model (as I would because I keep my hoarded piles of magazines I’ll never read in neat, organized piles, thank you) and that’s probably too many to squeeze in any meaningful character interactions/development.

(Also, yes. Swap-verse Alphyses are more likely to keep secrets from their Queens than non-Swap-verse Undynes are from their Kings.)

the red soul

(undertale spoilers)

each fallen human has a specifically coloured soul associated with them. these colours can be seen on the coffins in new home, asgore’s soul containers, and the photoshop flowey boss battle. little is known about these souls, but what can be inferred is that each soul colour represents a unique trait. accessing this information requires multiple rounds of “ball game” in the snowdin forest. if the game is completed fast enough and the red flag is obtained, the following message appears.

however, red soul’s trait is never mentioned. or is it?

determination is not a trait

before exploring the red soul’s trait, it’s time to explain why determination is not the red soul’s trait. while it is a popular choice, it ultimately does not work for a few reasons. unlike the other traits, every human soul has determination. 

rather than being a trait, determination is more akin to willpower or resolve. it’s a power that gives human souls “the strength to persist after death.” furthermore, this determination is extracted from the six human souls and injected into a golden flower, bringing flowey to life and giving him the power to control the underground’s timeline. this same power is what gives the humans the power to save and load.

unlike all the other traits, determination is inherently inside all humans. furthermore, “determination” is never mentioned in the ball game. it’s also never specifically linked with the red soul nor is it ever written in red text. the word “determination” is only written in white or yellow. 

there is nothing that suggests determination is an exclusive trait to the red soul. it is merely a component in all the coloured human souls.

the ball game

the different soul colours each represent their own positive traits according to “ball game.” the first time the red flag is achieved, the following message appears.

these are the positive traits of all the souls besides the red soul. when the ball game is won a second time in the conditions for the red flag, a new message appears.

it’s important to note that the ball game can only be played as long as snowdin is not cleared of monsters. if genocide is successful in snowdin, then the snowball will be gone, rendering the ball game useless. this is the only time the ball game cannot be played. in the neutral and pacifist routes, the game can be played even after reaching snowdin or after defeating papyrus.

the mirrors

from the red flag, the phrase “be yourself” is important. the idea of “being yourself” is seen repeatedly throughout the game, so long as the genocide route is not in motion. if frisk is still on the neutral route, frisk can look into the mirror in toriel’s home, and the following is said:

in new home, frisk can look into a second mirror and see the following:

this text appears in every route, except the genocide route. whether this is a reflection of frisk is up to interpretation.

in a pacifist route, after defeating asriel, frisk can look into the mirror in home once more to see this:

one of the most important elements of the pacifist route is the reveal of the protagonist’s true name, frisk. it highlights how frisk’s identity, or even their true self, is only revealed at the end of a pacifist route.

in contrast, the genocide route makes it clear that frisk is not themself from the start.

the red soul’s trait: being yourself

ultimately, the ball game holds the most important clue. the statement seems rather vague, until the one-word limitation is removed and the trait is seen as a phrase.

“being yourself” is seen in two ways in the context of undertale. the first is more obvious, with the phrase referring to how frisk is only themself in the neutral route and pacifist route. once the genocide route is in motion, frisk is no longer in predominant control – chara is. interestingly enough, when chara is in control during the genocide route and the snowdin forest is cleared, the ball game is unavailable, perhaps highlighting the fact that frisk is no longer truly themself.

the second way the virtue of “being yourself” is used in game is by its definition. “being oneself” means to be genuine, honest, or true to one’s character. along with determination, it is what allows frisk to keep going, especially in the pacifist route. sans alludes to this when he judges frisk in the last corridor.

“so as long as you do what’s in your heart” can be seen as another way to say “be true to yourself.” there is another reference to this trait in sans’ judgment should frisk have killed any monster.

while subtle, sans stresses the importance of being true to “yourself,” even in the face of committing a terrible crime.

“being yourself” may seem synonymous with integrity, but there is a difference. integrity is defined as “the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles.” while both are a quality of being honest, there is a difference to what that honesty is towards. those with integrity are righteous, fair, and of good character. however, integrity is not needed to be yourself. being yourself is to stay true to who you are, regardless of what that may be. perhaps a word for this could be “individuality,” “nonconformity,” or “sincerity.”

conclusion

while the other soul virtues are clearly defined by their colour coded trait, the red soul remains much more ambiguous. perhaps this is because frisk, chara, and the player persist as such different individuals despite being intrinsically linked, therefore the common trait between them can only be just that: their individual “true” self.

Hey that person who stealing your posts accused you of being racist? Is there anything behind that or are she just making baseless claims? There nothing I could find on that so I just wanted to inform you.

They don't give any citation, and it's not the first time I've been accused tbh, usually it's someone who doesn't like my comic and tries to nitpick how I "treat" Alya or Max, claiming I go too hard on them but ignoring when I have them redeem themselves. There's also another person who accuses me of having "yellow fever" and says I turned Kagami into a "tsundere", but likewise don't cite the source on that.

Thing is if they actually provided examples, I would fix things, but it reads as baseless accusations based on an emotional response. Way early into SL's development I was getting hate from someone who also claimed the same thing and their example was that I made Alya too light, and you know what? I could see their point - I relied too much on the eyedropper tool and she would come out too light, so I started coloring her darker. Not all "hate" is nonconstructive, but when people just call you names based on nothing it doesn't really give you a place to grow from.
