I hate hate hate how our community recieves so much hate form outsiders. For a while now I've been wondering about telling my roomate about my winged cat identity. Not just because I wanted her to understand, but mostly because if I have shifts it isn't weird. But a couple weeks ago my friends and I were eating and for some reason therians came up. I felt like my ears perked up, my tail wagging, my claws flexing. I sat there completely ready to mentioning lightly that I'm a winged cat.
But my heart immediatly dropped, because they only see us as "crazy kids that need therapy and are delusional". I was devastated. Because I thought they would understand, but they are just the same as everybody else. They are good friends, but they would ever understand. No human would

when i bite you directly on the neck, my blunt human teeth will feel no different than a dog's. only then will you understand that i have never been more than an animal.

sometimes i open tumblr and see all the nonhumans/alterhuman on my TL and all I can hear in the background is Real in Rio
GAAAH the therian/nonhuman community never ceases to amaze me. There's literally the coolest fucking people, creatures, characters, gods, angels, items- you name it. ITS JUST SO COOL!
Sitting over here kicking my feet bc a deity followed me back. scrolling my following and seeing what my dinosaur friend is up to. i just- GAAH
not to mention just how welcoming everybody is, it's wonderful. in all this adversity in such a cruel world we live in, we have a (semi)safe space. I wanna see this community grow and seeing people talk about how it used to be EVEN BETTER?? GODD we need to get some of that back.
keep being wild and unpredictable :pointing at viewer: share your stories and write some, do crafts, take up coding, whatever. just do it. you wanna know who's really good at learning crafts and hobbies? YOU!! get got nerd >:) go be a creature rn

"why are so many therians foxes?" theres 7.2 million red foxes in australia alone. thats just one country and one species.
"why are so many therians dogs?" theres about a billion dogs in the world. thats a LOT.
"why are so many therians..." have u considered common types of therians are just common animals?

Big fan of angels being autistic btw. "How does an entity like that have a neurological condition" Well they can act like that. Angels having traits that read as autistic. Incomprehensible being trying for their best mimicry of human behavior. You understand

"Being an alterhuman is an online trend I've never met one in real life!!!!!"
Honestly you probably have?
That kid who had a weird obsession with horses in kindergarten might be horsehearted or horse otherlink
That kid who hisses at people on the playground might be a cat therian
That teenager who spends all their time drawing wolves might be a wolf therian or werewolfkin
The person who only watches movies and shows about fantasy races might be fictionkin or otherkin
Or more likely there are hundreds of people whose interests don't match their alterhumanity!
Or even more likely, there are probably hundreds of people in the world who are alterhuman and have literally no idea!
You've probably met somebody who was alterhuman before, whether you knew or even if THEY knew it at the time.

I really wanna call myself a serval therian. Because I know I am. I am a serval!
Hhh... I just. I just don't wanna have so many theriotypes. It makes me feel fake. I know there's nothing wrong with it, there's no limit to how many theriotypes one can have. But... Idk it makes me feel cheap?
I try to ignore and repress the serval feelings too... I also tell myself that I'm not a serval therian because I don't have serval shifts, which doesn't make sense of course. I tell myself that I don't wanna use the label of servalkin because the serval identity came from me awakening my "soul kintype". I tell myself that I'm not my serval, but simply my soul. But the thing is... Labeling myself as a serval would make me so happy. Because I am one.
I don't have shifts. I don't have urges, I don't have instincts. I just am.

"Person" is not an Identity
The topic of nonhuman personhood came up in a conversation earlier, which led to me scrolling through the notes on the essay/rant I wrote on the topic at the end of last year [link]. While scrolling through, I saw multiple people express the view that if someone doesn't want to be referred to as a "person", that should be respected.
I would like to kindly but firmly disagree with that view.
Personhood is not a personal identity, and it should not be approached the same way that one approaches identity labels like sexuality, gender, or even species identity. Personhood is a social and legal category, which carries with it significant implications about how (and if) one is treated as a member of society.
Whether it is intended or not, a declaration like "I am not a person" is declaring that one does not see themselves as a being deserving of basic rights and safety. It is saying that they do not see themselves as deserving of dignity and basic respect as a thinking being.
The declaration that an individual (or more often, a specific group) does not have personhood has been used as the justification for all manner of atrocities, up to and including genocide. And I want to be very clear that I am not exaggerating that point. The removal of personhood is a key element of fascist ideology, and is not something to be done casually, even to oneself.
If someone tells me that they use a specific identity label, or set of pronouns, or even choose to not identify as human, I can respect that, and I will do my best to embrace their decision. On the other hand, if someone tells me that they are not a person, I consider that cause for alarm.
The important difference is that personhood is not a personal identity. It is the state of being recognized as worthy of basic dignity, rights, and respect. To deny one's personhood is to deny that you deserve basic rights like freedom from harm, the ability to own property, and the ability to make decisions about your own life and body. I would hope that it's abundantly clear why denying oneself those basic rights is a bad thing.
"Person" is not an identity. It is a fundamental trait that cannot and should not be removed from anyone, even voluntarily. The denial of one's personhood is, at best, incredibly misguided, and at worst incredibly dangerous.
So if you're someone who wants to not be called a "person", I implore you to examine why you feel that way in depth, and consider if the problem isn't being called a person, but the societal assumption that person = human. And if the problem is that societal assumption, the solution isn't to deny your personhood; it's to join the large number of people pushing for society to accept that not every person is human.

I have come up with a better metaphor than “you can’t pour from an empty cup” for burnout. You can’t boil an empty kettle. Pouring from an empty cup just gets you nowhere. Trying to boil an empty kettle can ruin the kettle, the stove, and burn down your house if you keep trying it.
