Marilyn Monroe photographed by Sam Shaw, in Amagansett, New York, in July 1957. Marilyn and her husband, Arthur Miller, spent the summer here, expect a few trips to the city for Marilyn’s premier for The Prince and the Showgirl, and for Marilyn’s fertility treatments. Marilyn took 1957 off from working to focus on being a wife to Arthur, a good step-mother to his children, and trying for a baby, herself, with Arthur. While in Amagansett, Marilyn and Arthur often went to the beach, she visited the Rosten’s who resented a home near theirs, gardened, played with her dog, Hugo, in the yard, and spent calm evenings reading or dancing with Arthur. Marilyn called his her happiest time in her personal life and the most stable. In June, Marilyn reveled in the news of her pregnancy, which sadly ended on August 1st, when she collapsed in the morning, while gardening. It took them two hours to drive from Amagansett, to Manhattan, for Marilyn’s doctor who she hoped could save her beloved unborn child. The doctor could not. It’s been said the sex of the baby was a boy, but this is impossible to know, as the pregnancy wasn’t far along enough to determine the gender.
