Every summer an ambitious spider will build a web ~5 feet across in my backyard.

...he began to take off his backpack.
As we approached the placid waters, a solitary duck noticed our entrance and decided to listlessly float away from shore. Showers lake, tucked in the wilderness of the Sierra Nevada's, sat quietly, awaiting our arrival.
We crossed over a small man-made dam and its gentle spillway, a babbling brook slowly descending hundreds of feet into the valley below. On the other side, the shore was not a muddy swamp as was before, but shelves of granite.
In the shallowest parts of the water, tiny minnows hid where larger fish would dare not swim. Just a couple yards away, schools of larger adolescents swarmed near the surface, hoping to catch insects buzzing over the lake.
The sun danced on the small wind-driven waves, shimmering on the scales of the fish. One larger minnow, only two or three inches long, drifted along the surface, missing a fin and struggling in its final moments before a predator might spy an advantageous meal.
We dipped our filter into the water and reclined against a rock that was overgrown with tree roots. Shade from the leaves danced against the granite. Strips of beef jerky were a tasty snack, if not for us, then as a suitable bait for a submerged pine cone we had supposed might be a crawdad.
Our hike was more than halfway over; we had arduously pushed 10 miles up the trail, and soon it would be time to descend over the next 7.5 miles to our destination. But for now, we could enjoy rest and lunch. I took a few bites of my sandwich and reclined in tranquility.
