ennis del-mar is sunshine. weighed with his responsibilities to his wife and daughters, he’s at ease with what he has, his happiness be damned. he’d never let himself want more. he’s rooted to the life he lives with. he has adapted to and accepts that the world around him is too dangerous to make space for the things he desires because that’s all he’s known, that there’s always been no room for him.

jack, he is midnight rain, he wants more, he craves more. he’s a dreamer, always had been. he wants that pain and anguish that comes with living. he’d turn his life upside down in the blink of an eye for a chance to get something he never could ever achieve, because as we know, like many of jacks ideas, they never come to pass.

I really hope they never remake brokeback mountain..I mean the scenery, the dialog, the chemistry between actors, etc. was absolutely perfect to me..

hear me out. jack/ennis and music.

ennis is writing a song for jack.

now he ain’t much with words so he just takes his guitar (his daddy taught him to play when he was a kid, before everything went sour) and he plays what’s in his heart, he’ll be damned if he lets himself put sappy nonsense into words but by god you can hear the love in them damn notes

and as he scribbles the notes onto the back of an old newspaper, he thinks about what the look on jack’s face’s be like when ennis plays it for him on their anniversary in a few days.

but, here’s what ennis doesn’t know.

jack is writing a song. for ennis.

now jack ain’t exactly a musical genius, put a guitar in his hands and he’s a clumsy fool, harmonica in his mouth an’ it sounds like a darned cat screechin’ to death. but words is something he’s good with. the fella could be a damn poet, ennis has said before, with a gruff smile.

and his voice ain’t exactly bad either. you’d hafta kill him before the fella would admit it but he ain’t bad with tunes. get the man drunk and he’d be serenading the whole bar with the voice of a goshdarn angel.

so, rhymes coming to him instantly as he scribbles on a notepad, jack wonders what ennis will say when he sings this for him in a few days, on their anniversary, in a simple lilting tune.

a few days whiz by, and jack and ennis are back up on brokeback just like in the old days. it’s night, and as the stars twinkle in the sky, ennis points out theirs and jack smiles and leans into his shoulder. the rough, desperate, almost animal thing between them still exists, but in the past decade or so of gentleness and consistency and steady love, it’s subsided, replaced with a quiet intimacy ennis could only call domestic.

now ennis is suddenly shy, but jack can read him, asks “what’s on yer mind, cowboy?” and ennis tells him, mumbling, it’s sappy, he knows, it’s stupid, it’s dumb, never mind, but, he wrote jack a song, and jack laughs. ennis is heartbroken, and gets up to go back into the tent, muttering “it’s fucking stupid”

jack realises what ennis thinks and runs to meet him, cups his face in his hands, says, “that ain’t why i laughed, friend. it’s. well. i wrote a song for you, too.” and ennis looks up and his eyes light up, and there’s something in his eyes. it’s dust, he says. or pollen. shouldnta come up here in spring, he says, as jack chuckles and knows damn well there ain’t nothin in his eyes.

and so, under the starlight, the warmth of the fire painting the two men with glowing yellows and oranges just like that second night up on brokeback, the tune and lyrics blend together perfectly. ennis plays the guitar, softly humming, love clear in his eyes, and jack’s angelic voice drifts up to the stars, who have always looked upon them so kindly.

and when the song ends, the guitar is forgotten as jack leans forward, throwing his arms around ennis’ shoulders, and kisses a surprises but grateful, awed ennis with the same passion he had twenty years ago, but this time less careful, less held back, less animal, with so, so much love, as ennis holds him by the waist and kisses back.

and…my darlin..i’ve loved you since the day i first saw you

- jack sings in the shower, all the time, and he's just. not good at it. ennis tells him so, he's like "you sound like that damn cat when it's yelling for more food" but he actually really loves it. he thinks it's very cute. but he'd rather die than ever admit that so he just insults jack instead lmao

- ennis LOVES getting his hair played with, so anytime they're just lounging around, ennis will lay with his head in jack's lap and jack will play with his hair. sometimes jack will be reading and he'll start reading out loud and ennis will end up falling asleep because he's just so comfy and safe

- i think i put this in the tag of the cat person post, but ennis 100000000000% talks to the cat about how much he loves jack, and one time jack heard him and he just sat there and listened and almost started crying because it was so sweet and sometimes jack gets insecure but that. that just got rid of any insecurities he could have

- they go stargazing a lot. neither of them know shit about space or the stars but it is beautiful and it reminds them of when they were on brokeback because they would look at the stars a lot up there and talk about everything and nothing. and it's kind of just like, the stars saw them and their happiness and didn't judge them for it. and the stars listened to them when they would sit up at night and cry about the situation before they got their sweet life. it's a comfort for them y'know

- they have a record player and jack went out a bought all of the sappiest love song records that he could just because he KNOWS ennis hates that shit, but deep down ennis is a romantic little shit so the songs do grow on him a little bit and he doesn't hate them as much as he used to. probably because he can relate to them now. he actually loves someone now, he understands what it's like to want and need someone so much, he understands how happy but also how heart shattering things can be, he understands how it's like, things were grey but then the world floods with all this color because of a person. he never felt that before but then this idiot jack twist crashed into his life and suddenly it all made sense

- ennis' kids visit them a lot and they ADORE jack so so so much and jack adores them right back. and we know how jack is so if the girls are like "jack GUESS what happened" he'll be like "oHoooooH do i smell drama???" and then they shit talk people together even though half the time jack has no idea who they're shit talking but if they did these sweet little girls dirty then they deserve the shit talking. and ennis is just sitting there like "what have i gotten myself into with these three" but it's so fond and he's so happy and the girls can see that and they love it and they love jack and it's like this life just makes so much sense

- they have a dog that jack brought home like ennis did with the cat, and it's a golden retriever of course because the pets reflect their owners in this household and jack is a golden retriever and it goes something like the dog LOVES ennis but ennis is like "stop it's so hyper and i want to be left alone" but obviously the dog grows on him because it's a little jack and so how could he not love the little gremlin? ennis and the dog cuddle a lot, it's like an animal pile a lot, the cat will lay on ennis and so will the dog and jack is just like "IT'S SO CUTE"

- ennis hugs jack from behind a lot. he'll rest his head on jack's shoulder too. and jack loves it. that's kinda been their things since ennis did that up on brokeback. it comforts both of them. and then sometimes he'll spin jack around and kiss him and jack'll laugh and his heart will be so full because they're free to be like this everyday now and nothing has ever felt so good

- love those hcs where jenny is queer too, and she goes to them for advice, but she's definitely more like jack where she isn't really afraid to be who she is, she thinks it's worth it. and of course ennis panics because he's so so scared that she's gonna get hurt being that open, just like jack was hurt. jack does his best to comfort him. he tells ennis "come on, we made it, didn't we?" "we BARELY made it jack, you almost died" "i know ennis but shoving it down ain't good either" and ennis knows that, god doesn't he know that. and he doesn't want her to be unhappy but he doesn't want her dead and it's just like jack and him all over again. jack suggests that they tell her to not shove it down but don't be too open about it, only be open about it with people she knows for sure will treat her well after. and ennis thinks that's good enough for now but he still worries, he still worries about jack and him now and again because it's hard to shake everything they went through completely

- every time either of them says "i love you" the other short circuits. like every time. doesn't matter how many times they've said it already, brain just implodes for both of them. ennis will blush every time without fail and stutter and just be so flustered. jack will grin like an idiot every time without fail, after staring at ennis with big doe eyes filled with wonder
