HELLO <3
I'm doing Nanowrimo so updates on The Raveling will start up in mid-December
If you haven't already, I'm tryna move this blog to a different account so go follow @bannisterroadkill
Because I haven't updated in forever and I feel bad about leaving y'all hanging... here have an excerpt of questionable quality that really doesn't make up for anything at all but is the best I can do
"I… uh… wow." At the sound of Fishlegs's voice, Hiccup craned his neck to glance back at his shoulder at the slack-jawed, limp-armed library assistant trying to sputter out a decipherable response. "That's… wow."
The smile on Hiccup's face physically ached from potency. "Fishlegs, meet Toothless. Officially, I guess." Toothless's eyes remained closed as he reveled in the bliss of chin scratches.
Fishlegs shuddered before clearing his throat. "Right. How far away is the tunnel?"
"It's in the storage room to the right of the dungeon entrance." Part of him shriveled a little at so casually revealing a secret passageway's location, but Hiccup gritted his teeth in an effort to refocus.
"Right, but how far away is it?"
"If all goes smoothly, just a few minutes." Hiccup retracted his hands from the dark scales, offering his dragon an apologetic smile. "Sorry, Bud, but we've got to get you out of here."
Fishlegs had already begun yanking scrolls out of the cabinet in his cart. Hiccup grabbed a few from Fishlegs's arms and began scattering them about the cage. A few glances at the scrolls revealed what Fishlegs had already informed him: these scrolls were erroneous transcriptions of texts already preserved in the fortress library. Only a trained eye would notice, though.
After dumping the rest of the scrolls into Hiccup's hands, Fishlegs darted back out into the main hallway. Seconds later, he scurried back into the dungeons. "The coast is clear," he hissed.
Pivoting, Hiccup faced Fishlegs.
"Make it count," Fishlegs groaned, scrunching up his face and squeezing his eyes shut.
Hiccup nodded and gulped. "Sorry," he offered. Then he punched Fishlegs in the face.

Update
Chapter 3 of The Raveling is up. I figured I'd hand y'all another chapter before the hiatus starts. Due to a traumatic family situation involving our beloved family dogs, I'm going to take a break from this story for a few months. I still have every intention of finishing (yeah, I know a lot of people say that), but writing about the bond of boy-and-dragon is... it's really painful right now.
How To Train Your Dragon has been in my life since 2010, through all my other worst moments. It's not going away any time soon. Neither will the stories I've created to extend the universe.
Thank you for your kind comments so far, and now thank you for your patience.
If you have a pet, hug them for me.
#ami speaks#i know this isnt want you want to hear#i just cant write about hiccup and toothless cuddling and loving each other right now#it hurts too much#i hope you can understand

I recently had someone comment on one of my fics that they loved it and have read it like once a month for the past few years. Which wow, what a comment! Except... how was I to know? Before this, they'd left no kudos, no bookmark, no comment. Just a view number. Like, I'm grateful for the comment, but it just blew my mind at the thought that others too might enjoy my writing, but who leave nothing.
And this person, who apparently has been reading this for years, whose account has been in service for years... didn't think to give any signal that they liked it before now. Did they forget? Or is this what the silent hundreds of readers do?
Like, am I insane? Greedy? Writing into a void? Views mean nothing - it could be bot views, after all. Kudos is just a button away, same with bookmarks, comments a few keystrokes (but harder, I get it)... please feed your authors.
I'm yet to reply to them. 'Thank you for finally letting me know' feels a tad facetious 😅
--
For many readers, their relationship with fic is about them and their feelings about these characters. It might be about their friends they share recs with. Coming back to the author and forming a connection there is a distant concept.
Does it suck for you, the writer? Absolutely! But it's a pretty common mode of interacting with fic all the same.
I found Plaidadder's fic on an old website, and it didn't occur to me to reach out, that I recall. It's only years later that I noticed her on tumblr and mentioned that I've been using those fics to explain the entire concept of fic to people for decades.
Granted, AO3 makes it easier to just leave a quick comment.
So do feed your authors... but also be aware that there are plenty of lurkers who just never thought to comment because that's not how they do things normally.

Update (for all 5 of you who follow me)
I totally plan on having ch 14 up by Monday, but I'm really behind on finishing it. I usually finish chapters 1-2 weeks before I post them so I can revise & edit them, but it's been crazy.
I swear I'm trying to get this done I promise
