PG&E computer glitch causes false report of massive East Bay power outage, utility says
A computer glitch is being blamed for the false reporting of a massive power outage in the East Bay Wednesday evening, according to Pacific, Gas and Electric (PG&E). The utility's website originally reported that more than 77,000 customers were without power in parts of Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito and Richmond.
However, that wasn't actually the case, all of those customers had power but PG&E says a technical error was reporting a massive outage. The utility company has since deleted the post from it's website.

Chandigarh power outage
‘Inconvenience for both patients & staff’
“Since morning, we were grappling with getting things in order, as the power supply in GMSH-16 was cut off at 5 am and it was restored only at 1.30 pm. Though we have a backup, it is very tough to work in these situations. The lifts were not operational, many machines, equipment and refrigerators work at a certain temperature, require high power and cannot work on generators. Vaccines from many health and wellness centres had to be shifted, as we did not want to take any risk of them getting spoilt. We had to postpone all elective surgeries and our main focus was the emergency and labour room. So many patients and staff faced inconvenience. Power is an essential service and this is not the right way to register a protest,” said Dr Suman Singh, Director Health Services.
Power supply to GMCH-32 disrupted at 2 am
At 2.00 am Tuesday morning, the electricity supply to GMCH-32 was disrupted, though generators automatically switched on within 30 seconds. According to Dr Sudhir Garg, the Medical Superintendent, all critical areas and other clinical areas did not face any problem as they are all connected to generators. Senior doctors and other electrical staff posted in the hospital closely monitored the situation. With the intervention of the Chandigarh Administration, the electricity supply was restored at 5.00 am and since then it has been continuing. “As a precautionary measure to avoid overloading the generators and in the interest of patients’ safety, elective surgeries scheduled for today were postponed. The emergency and labour room were functional and we have another backup of generators,” said Dr Garg.
PGI monitoring power situation
A statement issued by the PGI said that it is coordinating with the UT Administration to ensure an uninterrupted supply of electricity to the institute. The situation is being viewed seriously and a senior engineer has been deputed at the 66 KV substation here. For critical areas, there is a backup source for four days and officials here are microscopically monitoring the situation to ensure that no hospital service is impacted.

Defective underground cable sparks power outage on North, East Shores
All customers have been restored as of 7:50 p.m., according to a Con Edison spokeswoman.
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A power outage spanning across multiple North and East Shore neighborhoods Sunday evening was caused by a defective underground cable that sparked a manhole fire, according to Con Edison.
Nearly 5,000 customers were without power as of 6:45 p.m.; however, the vast majority of those homes had power restored by 7:35 p.m., said company spokeswoman Alina Suriel. Around 1,200 homes remained without power at that time but were expected to be restored by 8 p.m.
The outage primarily affected Sunnyside and portions of West Brighton and Castleton Corners, the Con Edison outage map showed. Sections of Emerson Hill, Grasmere and Silver Lake were also affected, the map indicated.
The FDNY did not immediately respond for information concerning its response to the manhole fire.

What to do if you have a power cut during Storm Eunice
With Storm Eunice threatening wind speeds of up to 90mph across the country, the Met Office has warned homes could be left without power.
UK Power Networks, which manages power lines across the East of England and London, has issued advice to homeowners in the event they are left without electricity due to the weather.
People are advised to call 105 if their power is cut off or they see a power line has been brought down in the strong winds.
Other advice issued by UK Power Networks includes:
Charging up your mobile phone before the weather hits and using a rechargeable mobile power bank
Using a phone with a cord if you have one - cordless landlines don’t work in a power cut
Checking your torch is working and has spare batteries
Keeping doors closed on freezers - they remain cold for hours
Keeping warm by dressing in warm clothes
Looking out for vulnerable neighbours and calling 105 if they need assistance
Checking UK Power Networks' live power cut map on its website for updates in your area.
Ian Cameron, head of customer services and innovation, said: "We understand how difficult it is to be without electricity especially during cold weather, and will be working to restore supplies quickly if there are power cuts.
"Keeping people safe and fixing power cuts is our priority, so if you see any damaged power lines our advice is to stay away, keep everyone clear and call us on 105."

UK man faces power outage for three days
A man from England has been in the news after he received a cheque for over two trillion pounds from a power supply company. Although it was later clarified to be an error, the man and netizens had a blast cracking jokes about “cashing” the cheque.
Gareth Hughes, a resident of Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire, shared a picture of the cheque for more than £2.3 trillion. Hughes was among the many customers of Northern Powergrid, who received money from the company as compensation for power outages after the area was by Storm Arwen in November.
Sharing the image of the cheque he received, Hughes took to Twitter to thank the company for the money but asked the firm to confirm the 13-figure sum. “Before I bank the cheque however, are you 100% certain you can afford this? #trillionpounds,” he inquired.

Power outage in Pune
A major fault in the 400 KV high-tension transmission lines of Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL) at Chakan and Lonikand substations disrupted power supply to the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad in the early hours of Wednesday.
The power failure that started at about 5 am continued for more than six hours. Supply was restored around 11 am in some areas, and, by 11.30 am, almost 80 per cent of the city had its electricity restored, MSETCL officials said.
“From 4.30 am, there has been tripping at five points in the tower cable lines. Our engineers are working on a war footing to identify the faults,” Sachin Talewar, chief engineer of Pune zone of Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the power distributor, told The Indian Express.
Jayant Weekey, Pune zone chief engineer of MSETCL, said the fault arose due to bad weather. “Due to heavy fog, the creepage distance of the insulator gets reduced to a certain level,” he said.

Pune power outage: IT professionals forced to defer login timings
The creepage distance is an important parameter of the insulator that affects the safe operation of transmission lines.
“During weather conditions like we have these days, the fog surrounds the transmission line. Hence, the distance maintained in the insulator reduces, leading to the development of a short circuit path. This can lead to faults and tripping. Generally, whenever one transmission line trips, other lines also get overloaded. In this case, overloading to other lines led to faults. However, phase-wise

Godavari, North Andhra districts suffer power outage for hours
Most parts of Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam, East and West Godavari districts falling under the limits of AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL) suffered a power outage on Thursday. Due to power failure in over 36 substation areas, many rural pockets suffered an outage that lasted for three to five hours. Though the electricity supply was restored in some areas after evening, the exact reason for the disruption could not be known immediately.
The discom’s mandal-wise feeder interruption report, which gives real-time data of the power outage, showed some mandals in Srikakulam district remained power-less for nearly 15 hours.East Godavari saw disruption in the supply since the morning. “Power supply was restored only after 9 pm and there was no proper response from the department officials on the reason for the outage,’’ K Subramanyam, a resident of Sarpavaram near Kakinada, said. An assistant engineer in Kakinada city circle said there was no problem at the sub-station level and interruption in the supply was from the headquarters itself.
In Vizianagaram, the power outage started at 12 noon in rural and agency areas and from 5 pm in the urban and semi-urban areas. The supply was restored across the district only after 9 pm. AP Transco officials claimed that emergency load relief was the reason behind the outage. In Visakhapatnam, there was a power outage in areas under K Kotapadu, VUDA Haritha, Padmanabham, Rolugunta and Darakonda sub-station areas in K Kotapadu, Padmanabham, Anakapalle, Rolugunta, Chintapalli, and GK Veedhi mandals and some GVMC areas.AP Transco senior officials said there was no problem in production or dispatch of power through the grid.
