Unlike our neighbors across the pond, we are used to those cheap panel hollow doors. They are everywhere, even in expensive houses. We are conditioned to overlook them. Real estate photos rarely have doors in the frame and if they have, doors are left wide open. Meanwhile, they are flimsy, easily pass sounds across and arguably plain ugly. 

Our Story

I am Valeria, an owner of Canadian branch of business, keeper of family traditions.

Back in 1999 in Russia at the time of fast economy recovery from devastating turmoil a year earlier, arising middle class created a strong demand for higher living standards. Following this trend my parents established  a business to satisfy this demand of high quality yet affordable  European doors.Seventeen years later, in 2016, equipped with family ‘know-how” and acquired business connections, I become a cofounder of Toronto based branch. Here we hope to introduce the same high standard and affordable house doors as my parents did back home.

Feels Like Luxury Car

I have nothing but praise to say about Notadoor. True to their website, it was really worry free wonderful experience. I am building a luxury house from a ground up and had a lot of choices to make. Valeriya was very patient in accommodating my ever changing vision of the future home in which doors - a lot of them! - turned out to be an essential part.

Initially I was a bit nervous trusting my big projects with dozens of various doors into hands of this young company. But after visiting their cozy showroom, talking to Valeriya and learning about the history and philosophy of quality and pride she and the team maintain, I decided to make a plunge and never regret. Through numerous showroom consultations and visiting the site I was patiently guided through ocean of choices of door models, finishes and opening systems. Sometimes it seemed that Valeriya in her proposals was more than me concerned about the integrity of overall home decor even in expense of Notadoor profit.

At some point, when I was hesitant to make a decision Valeriya and her design team provided me with a rendering of the intended door in the planned context, which not only was helpful, but turned out to be pretty close to the reality.

In a course of this decision making I set on unconventional using of non white doors in the basement. Looking backwards I think that was my best choice, making generic basement look unique.

And it pays. Now with doors in place everyone visiting me talks about them, their elegance, the quality of installation and seamless working of opening mechanics - it really feels like a Mercedes (substitute with your favorite luxury car brand here). The doors become talking point of my guests.

All the way through house construction even before door arrived Valeriya was frequent visitor at the job site, making sure other crews were comfortable in uncommon situation when doors are installed last. And when the time of installation came, Notadoor crew exceeded all my expectation. Really flawless job!

There were some special cases worth mentioning where Notadoor shined in non standard situations.

Bathroom door opening is in a tight spot. Special bi-folding door made an elegant solution.

Unusually wide laundry room. Matte glass door and double sliding cascade opening system was a perfect workaround, let alone thing of beauty. Installation was challenging due to heavy weight of door / rail combination, but was skillfully performed without resorting to quality sacrificing shortcuts. And now it takes no effort to open and close it even with one hand carrying laundry load.

Overall quality of the door with excellent sound proofing was especially handy in such utilitarian spot as furnace room where noise otherwise would be a problem.

Overall, I am very happy with product, service and the final result. My home gained unmeasured quality of comfort and elegance, where instead of generic bland panels people would overlook, doors became a true mark of craftsmanship and design.

Kudos to Valeriya, Alex and the rest of Notadoor team working behind the scenes. Highly recommended!

Greatness in the Grey

Interior doors we see daily are usually white or painted off white,  like Swiss Coffee color. Sometimes in hospitals or coffee shops you can encounter other light colors, like maple veneer. Nevertheless, they are almost universally bright. 

It is a practical choice, that makes tight spaces visually bigger and airy and sends a message of unpretentious living.However, from designer point of view every interior element supposed to be in harmony and often other colors, maybe even darker colors makes more sense. Taken to the extreme, consider Black. From the English Queen dress to Steve Jobs turtleneck black is associated with Class and Sophistication. It is more difficult and require design thinking to make its use appropriate, but in right context the result could be astonishing. Let’s see how dark grey became organic to the design of the particular condo unit, somewhere in Russia and what benefits it introduced.

Aura of Sophistication

Grey immediately introduce a high style. It’s demanding, though. If design is not well thought grey will make it a caricature.

Sign of Destination

Like a punctuation sign, grey door at the end of bright hallway creates a visual stop, a destination point.

Subtleness

Intricate modern door finish under right local illumination contrasts with flat black walls and introduce subtle sense of beauty right into observer subconsciousness.

Contrast

Grey makes white interior elements visually standout.

Accent

An overhead local spotlight accentuates a shiny or nickel handle on otherwise dark surface.

There are more possible benefits of grey designer keeps in mind: grey and flat can make door visually insignificant, it can make low ceiling appear taller drawing attention upward, it can make black spots (switched off TV, fireplace not in use) less of eyesore, it hides fingerprints around door knob, it can delimit private zone of the house...

From design rendering to installation.

One of the initial steps in our customers Notadoor experience is a design consultation, where we help them to navigate sea of door model, finishes, opening system and hardware choices. In complicated cases we visualize our proposal based on customer provided photo.

Hidden Hinge for Hidden Door

Concealed hinge was invented by Joe Soss, Romanian immigrant into New World, at the beginning of 20th century during his sea travel from Philippines. 

The story says, he "stumbled on a protruding cargo hold hinge while strolling on deck during the voyage home. Sometime between his fall and the moment he picked himself up, the idea for the invisible hinge was born." Making door INVISIBLE

Door that blends

One of the tools in interior designer toolbox is  de-emphasizing doors. It may sounds counterintuitive to hide quality piece of home interior, but sometimes “less is more”.

 Nowadays the primary reason would be to avoid visual split of otherwise continuous wall and to create a sense of bigger space than it would appear otherwise.INVISIBLE door opening system is frameless and hence does not use a trim. It hides hinges out of the way and a little more than a door handle indicates its presence. It blends into surrounding wall by having similar appearance and looks great in modern airy interiors.

Jib door

Also known as jib, blind or Gibb door such style was popular in old England to disguise an entrance to servants quarters. Later on it found application to hide entrance to private or unsightly chambers, like powder room or a bedroom.Among prominent interior designers who actively used the jib doors were David Hicks and John Fowler. 

New World

Mainly used in Europe such doors got little attention in the New World. However, Oval office in the White House features them being added at time of Eisenhower.

ROTO Opening System

In tight spaces where live most of us it can happen that there is just not enough space to open the door.

Or maybe there is a toilet on the way to open it. Well, you got the idea.

There are some space saving designs you probably are familiar with. For example, sliding or bi-folding doors often used in closets. But, what if you want simplicity of opening rotating door and still use less space to open it?

Meet the ROTO door

It moves while rotating. In open state ROTO door sits between both sides of the doorway. In opening movement it takes half the space of traditional pivot system.
