This ending definitely confirms my theory that Jensen was always more aware and thoughtful than a lot of fans gave him credit for (myself included sometimes), because he clearly saw that ending for the massive pile of shit it was and tried to push back. I'm not saying he was hoping for a romantic Destiel ending (because that IS too much credit, I'm afraid), but I'm positive he wanted Cas in the finale somehow and there's absolutely no way he wanted to see Dean die in that way. I've always said the show didn't deserve Misha, but in the end it proved it never deserved Jensen either.

MISHA SAID THAT IF JENSEN WASNT ON BOARD WITH DESTIEL GOING CANON THEY WOULD NOT HAVE DONE IT. PERIOD.

HE ALSO SAID WHEN THEY BROUGHT UP THE IDEA TO JENSEN, HE WAS TOTALLY ON BOARD WITH THE IDEA AND DID NOT PUSH BACK AT ALL.

Plus Jensen even helped Misha improvise the bloody handprint on Dean's shoulder, which is a call back to how they first met and how they've changed each other. He also has been talking more about the relationship between Dean and Cas the past year and making more light hearted jokes about it. Like the "Dean has no taste clearly" joke he made and him laughing at Misha saying that if spn was on HBO Dean and Cas would be having sex. So he's obviously not uncomfortable with the idea or with talking/cracking jokes about it.

So all yall saying Jensen doesn't like destiel or wasn't on board or they forced him are just.........✨ wrong ✨

you know what i just realized that is another sign that this isn't the end for cas?

no matter what, sam and dean still have to deal with the empty. the empty who is angry at jack and angry that it's "loud now." this isn't the end of the empty, which means it isn't the end of cas because cas is now part of the empty. they go hand in hand

maybe i'm going insane but have you noticed dean's little smile after cas says "i love you." it's barely noticeable, and it's laced with pain, but it's there, just watch his lips:

and the look in his eyes after he swallows. he smiles with his eyes, too.

so i raise you this: cas is smiling back. he saw it, too, he's reassuring dean that it's okay, that he doesn't have to say it. because he saw it—

dean didn't say it back, not verbally. cas thinks he understands what dean's expression means, just like he thought he knew what dean was going to say in purgatory after his prayer. but he doesn't. because dean doesn't actually say it. that's the resolution we're looking for—for dean to express how he feels without interruption and without impending doom

Idk how tf I’m gonna say all this coherently but...

Everything about the supernatural finale plot line so far has been just one huge love letter to the fandom and death of the author.

When Chuck was revealed to be God but still the author of “the story”, he was still seen as a positive figure.

It didn’t matter that reality was essentially his story. It was only when he refused to let his “characters” be who they actually turned out to be instead of what he intended that there was a problem.

This is essentially the writers being self aware and recognizing that at a certain point, your story is not your own anymore. It grows and changes, has a mind of its own, and is influenced by the 1, 10, or 1,000’s of people who love it deeply. And they’re saying that that’s right. That’s how it should be.

Case and point, say it with me friends...

Castiel.

Cas was meant to be in a few episodes as sort of like a “Clarence” (no pun intended) figure then pitter off, and now he’s been a beloved part of the show for 12 years.

...how the fuck did that happen?

Because of us. if Chuck avatar-for-the-writers Shurley is anything to go off of, the writers 100% did not intend this, want us to know they did not intend this, and say “who tf cares, it’s amazing anyway”

Cas was never meant to fall in love with Dean (and hopefully vice versa, I just don’t want this to age terribly 😬), but so many of us saw ourselves in the way they acted around each other, a show intended as, let’s be honest, kind of a dude bro thing, gained thousands of lgbt fans, we loved these two so deeply for years, that he did anyway. Even if it started as an accident, they somehow fell in love purely because we saw it. And you know what the writers said?

That that’s what’s real. They may start off with different intentions, but our interpretation made it something entirely different, wonderful and true. A story isn’t an object to be carved in Stone like Chuck thinks, it’s a living, breathing entity that is driven and shaped by love, whoever loves it enough.

I read somewhere that the supernatural writers said something along the lines of “it’s certainly not a game of thrones ending” and I choose to take that very literally. The writers of game of thrones essentially ended up kissing their own asses by having this weird cop-out “storytellers are the greatest people ever and we owe everything to them”, and the ending of supernatural so far says wholeheartedly “fuck that.”

Storytellers can be stubborn, storytellers can be wrong, storytellers can think they know exactly how something should be and accidentally ruin it. When an author keeps their characters closely guarded and don’t allow them to organically become whatever they’ve come to mean to those the story is loved by, with or without them, it all falls apart.

The writers want us to know that we’ve made this show entirely different than intended over the years, and that it’s beautiful.
