The manufacturing of “unwanted” babies and children has a long and ongoing history and it’s partly about coercing women and girls into giving up babies they don’t “deserve” and partly about laundering the children of people who can’t afford to care for them RIGHT NOW into “unwanted, abandoned” children. Many countries have now outlawed international adoptions because of the number of cases in which adoption brokers stole children who had families and whose families wanted them.*
The vast majority of children in “orphanages” since the invention of the concept have been children whose families do want them back but can’t afford to keep them. John Boswell’s study of child abandonment in the European Middle Ages even found that this was true of children given up to monasteries—people sometimes needed the kid back! (Remember a child is a resource—a source of labor and old-age security)
And if you DO have a lot of children being born whose birth parents GENUINELY didn’t want them… then what you’ve got is a society in which people with childbearing organs do not have access to reproductive autonomy. Self-evidently.
*The Child Catchers by Kathryn Joyce goes into detail on how this affects evangelical Christian politics in the USA, it’s a ten year old book but it was unfortunately prescient for many of the developments of the last decade

I had a dream where a bunch of grey long-snouted creatures were gathered around this other creature, who was their creator, and were chanting “give us the wisdom of not knowing death” over and over again in a cheerful sing-song tone. They wanted their creator to make it so that they wouldn’t know about death/know that they will die, believing this would free them or enlighten them, or make them wiser.

wait as someone who is not usamerican how does gerrymandering work exactly? and how come it doesn't work on statewide and federal levels? the way people talk online makes it seem like it affect every election
Sure. So the American federal legislature (Congress) is divided into two parts. There is the Senate where every state gets two senators no matter how many people live there and the House of Representatives, where representation is determined by how many people live in your state.
But representatives in the house don’t just represent the entire state. They represent a smaller part of the state called a congressional district. Each district should have about 750,000 people in it, but who lives in what district is decided by state level legislatures once every decade when they draw the district maps.
Gerrymandering is the practice of drawing those district maps in such a way that one group gets power over and another in terms of who can mathematically win a district. People do this using demographic generalizations and previous voter records. This means that gerrymandering actually only affects House of Representatives elections where those districts matter. For Senate elections and presidential elections everyone in the state votes together so there’s no gerrymandering happening that affects the outcome.
Usually gerrymanders involve splitting up a coalition into a bunch of different districts so that they can’t win any seats (cracking) or putting every single demographic likely to vote for the opposing party into one district so that they can only win that one seat (packing)
Tumblr media
Here are two examples: in the Alabama one on the left you can see that Republicans put all of the majority black parts of the state and the major cities that they vote Democrat in in one district to make it so the Democrats can only win 14% seats when 35% of the state voted Democrat in the last presidential election. In the Texas one you can see that Republican split up a very liberal city (Austin) into a bunch of tiny districts that radiate outward into more conservative areas so that Republicans can control them and Austin doesn’t get a lot of power.

Gerrymandering is often used to further white supremacist voting outcomes or to suppress the power of voters of color who disproportionately vote Democratic. The Supreme Court has said that racial gerrymandering is illegal because that’s goes against our discrimination laws but partisan gerrymandering (doing it based on party) is fine. The problem with this is that especially in the south white people overwhelmingly vote Republican, so partisan gerrymandering IS racial gerrymandering down here.
Blue states also gerrymander (hi maryland and illinois) but at lower rates. Because each side has to mutually agree to stop, rigging it by gerrymandering, there is no incentive to play fair. Republicans have realized this, Democrats refuse to.
