âSomething close? Like, this place being not at all what it was advertised close? Thatâs a lot of lengths to keep the lid tight on this place. But makes sense if theyâre after us..â
Peter tried to think what else they could be after? Theyâd need to get their hands on a lackey or minion to get any actual answer. The computer would only take them so far. As she placed her hand on his, his face froze for a minute. That was the closest she had ever been to him. Other than the occasional side hug which was all that he could handle, for the most part. âOk Parker, youâre trying to rescue a classmate. Not fish for a kiss. Be cool. Besides, sheâs rad and youâre justâŠbread? Thatâs doesnât rhyme. Anyways..â, he thought to himself. Truly this was not the place or time for him to let his emotions turn. âIs it just me, or does that not look fun at all?â he said while looking at the screen with her. âTo me, it could be another H.H. Holmes Murder Hotel. But, that couldnât happen.. right?..â Deep down he wanted this to be nothing more that a dream, and that heâd wake up any minute in class and realized he slept through an entire lecture.
Peter had never seen Carol use any of her strength. Not even the one time they met in costume, it was more like a friendly meeting. This was serious. âI think I can download the PDF of the blueprints on my phone.â He connected his phone to the computer with a USB cord and began the process. It only took a minute or two for the file to finish. âAnd done. But fair warning, Iâm no Columbus when it comes to maps and such. Iâll try my best not to get us stuck⊠or worseâŠâ Standing up, he threw his bag back over his shoulder and headed towards the door. The tent, it seemed, would be their next target. âSuper powered blonde ladies first.â He joked while holding the door open.
Carol chocked up Peterâs tensing to the sight on the screens. It was natural to become apprehensive when a façade of fun was removed to reveal a maze of deathtraps. In the focus of the fight (and this was a fight, or would be as soon as she got her hands on this carnival leader) she did not pay much attention to how close she was to him. This was business and business-Carol only ever felt hormones after the fact. âOf course it could happen. History can repeat after all.â
âTo be fair Christopher thought he landed is India, so even Columbus was no Columbus. On the off chance you get us stuck, Iâll just punch until we have a new door.â She was so ready to make some new doors. She knew punching wouldnât fix everything but she wouldnât know until she tried. âChild prodigies second,â she said as she passed with a tight smile.
She took the lead past the trailer and back toward the main fairgrounds, sticking to the edges instead of walking boldly across open space. Her eyes scanned, making her feel twitchy as she looked for anyone who would stop them. She came up fast at one point and put out an arm to warn Peter to stop as a trio of workers passed by. When the path was clear again she signalled forward with a chop and started again. At the edge of the giant tent she paused them again. She turned to Peter with raised brows.
âDoes the map have a best entry point?â she said in a half-whisper.

Carol glanced over at his chuckle with a mirroring smile. She couldnât even tease him since she spent a fair amount of her own time eating. âA good story, but a good truth, too. I mean we are supposed to be heroes and weâre all adults anyway.â At least she was supposed to be a hero. She had not seen Peter in those same classes and had never asked his program.Â
âAt least she got some good hits in,â she said as she studied the disturbed surroundings. Her imagination pulled up ideas of what had taken place here and she felt cold with focused anger. âWe go get our girl,â she said with steel resolve. Carol crept close to the door and listened closely, not hearing anything she twisted the knob until the locking mechanism snapped and she could pull the door open.
Carol took a deep breath and pulled open the door to find the trailer housed a well designed open room with computers, electronics and other equipment. It reminded her of Tonyâs workspace, but seemed out of place in a carnival. It was empty of people, but as she stepped inside she saw a collection of vials and a syringe on one end of a metal table. She did not know what had been in the vial, but she had a sneaky suspicion it had been used on Mary.
âSo she was here at one point. Do you recognize any of this stuff?â She scanned the tables recognizing wires, chips, mother boards, fans, a whole collection of electrical engineering pieces.Â
Peterâs face quickly turned from interested to sickened. All of these monitors covered every inch of the fair grounds, it was like someone had been watching them. He could see students playing games, eating food, walking around holding hands. The thought of them, even himself, being watched made his stomach turn. Even as a photojournalist, he believed in personal space. But this was too much. This, needed to be stopped by any means possible. Without hesitation he shook his head to bring himself to the task at hand.
Looking around the room he found the vials Carol spoke of, he picked one up to inspect it. âDiazepam? This is a minor sedative, but in the right doses it can knockout a horse. And in liquid form, it probably hit her bloodstream and she was out cold. But who would do such a thing and why her?..â No matter what thought passed through his head, nothing made sense. She was a normal student training to be an Agent of SHIELD. âDo you think theyâre trying to send a message? The more I think of it, this could all be some way to get at SHIELD. The failure of security checks for the carnival staff, the kidnapping of Mary, the monitors, everything.. OrâŠare they simply after everyone with powers?..â The words he spoke made him want to rip apart the computers in front of him. Even though he hadnât told anyone about blue and red, he still felt connected to everyone he met. Especially Carol.
Peter looked at the computers in front of him and noticed there was a control panel connect all of them. âMaybe I can use this to access, something, anything.â He clicked and tapped his way around the computer with ease, but came into a problem. The main database was locked and obviously they didnât have the password. In his youth he always wanted to do computer engineering, but biology always called to him. But he did learn a thing or two. Out of his satchel he pulled out a thumb stick, a very special thumb stick. âThis is a hacking software I designed when I was a kid. If anything will crack it, this will.â He placed the USB into drive and let it work. âCake.â Once the files were open he looked for anything special. Files on the campus layout, the staff, passwords to the SHIELD computers, and a file on every single student with powers. But, one file stuck out the most. âArcade: Murderworld? Umm, doesnât sound too attractive..â
This made sense, but unsettling sense. The screens of fellow students from a myriad of directions made her wonder what kind of checks had been done on the carnival staff that no one had noticed this little redflag.
âGoing after the powered sounds possible given the hate Iâve seen, but it doesnât explain Mary. She didnât have anything that I know of so maybe she got too close to something.â She was thinking aloud to process.
She listened to Peter with a lifted brow. She knew he was working in the scientific program, but this was the first she had seen on hacking in his arsenal, and as a child no less. âNice,â she said in approval as files flooded the screen and then she felt a thick weight in the pit of her stomach. âSounds like a B-Movieâs C-level sequel,â she joked but given the rest of the files she wasnât feeling the humor. She reached out over his hand to click it open, and studied the blueprints that came up. A round facility showing pulleys, trap doors, weights, and all other sorts of mechanics under the surface of the round building and up into the pointed ceiling. She squinted at the odd shape. âThat stupid tent,â she said with a groan as the shape became familiar.
âHow good are you at reading blueprints? We need to get in there and I want to know what weâre stepping into,â she said coolly, gripping the edge of the desk. With a crack it snapped off in her hand.

Peter continued with Carol down the path taking pictures of anything that might look useful, if not now then later when he develops the images. âI think Iâve seen her a few times in the library, itâs the only other place I go if Iâm not in the cafe.â He lightly chuckled. The missing pictures helped to remember what she looked like but not who she was. Another student yes, but what was so special about her that she was kidnapped. Questions filled his head as the my walked. âAn assignment would make sense. But then again if word gets out the SHIELD is letting a bunch of teenagers do their work, how is the world supposed to trust them with the bigger problems? Actually, that sounds like a pretty good story..â As they walked Peter noticed the a disturbance along the path. Branches and twigs broken, drag marks in the dirt, and serval different foot prints. A type of struggle perhaps? Taken into the trailers? He bent down to get a closer look. âCarol, there was definitelyâŠa struggle that occurred here. If she was an agent to be, she put up one hell of a fight, the teachers woulda been proud.â He followed the tracks right up to the door of the trailer where another piece of clothing was found. He then stood back up and stared back at Carol. âWhat should we do?âŠâ
Carol glanced over at his chuckle with a mirroring smile. She couldnât even tease him since she spent a fair amount of her own time eating. âA good story, but a good truth, too. âIf he never shows I might have to. Or maybe Iâll just take his job and blow through that glass ceiling. Who needs a boss when you can be the boss, right?â Not that he was really her boss, he just had more experience in the tights. âGood call. It comes with a lot of arm waving and when one of those arms is metal some stuff can get smashed by accident. I lost a lamp that way, but he made it up to me.â She smiled slyly thinking of the very fun way he had paid her back.
âYouâre right, thatâs not as entertaining. Pity. Iâm not going to be the kind of roommate whoâs going to remind you to call your people because they miss you, so you should probably get on that call if you feel like it. Sure that you couldnât be persuaded to change to a fictional mentor?â Illyana said, disappointed that Captain Planet probably wouldnât make visits to the school. âAs fun as that sounds, Iâll skip the rant, thanks.â No need to feed the Loki ego train if he happened to overhear.

âClearly thatâs how it should work in real life. Yes, yeah a group is always better in my opinion. Especially since I still am not sure I get this whole game and I donât plan to die by stupidity early on. That is also my life motto.â Carol had thought it would be a good strategy game, but this was turning out to be a much longer game than expected.
âWhat? I thought it would be a good idea to speak to the guard since I have the highest charisma score, but then I⊠overcompensated,â Illyana sighed, putting her head in her hands. âSo then I just used a spell on him so heâd like me better and forget that Iâd messed up in the first place. Thatâs not really how it works in real life, I promise. Do you want to join a group?â

âNot quite that bad, but thank you for that image. Captain Marvel, heâs my mentor. Which reminds me, I should probably check in sometime soon.â She bit her lip with guilt. To be fair he had not called her either which stung. Carol snickered, remembering a story she had heard. âActually the refrigerator was Bucky if I remember right. Only bring it up if you want a long and hilarious rant about Loki.â It was mean and one more reason she was not a Loki fangirl, but it was also genuinely funny.
âAdorable. I have no idea who your mentor is, so Iâm going to imagine Captain Planet in a tutu,â Illyana said with a smirk. Pulling up her pillow and starting to fiddle with it, she added, âThereâs no fun in being at a weird school if you donât have something weird to show for it. Hopefully they have something weird otherwise to make up for it. Erikâs are cool. Iâve always admired refrigerators, and heâs halfway there. Okay, that was a crappy joke, but donât rub it in.â

Carol reached over to feel the fabric. The pattern matched the description given for Mary Colina. âHavenât met her, just seen the statements. Sounds really stiff to me.â An official statement was meant to be stiff, but still. Who expected professionalism from a carnival? She smiled briefly, it was good to see him too despite the circumstance. âObviously. One of our own goes missing and we arenât expected to investigate? I half expected this to be a class assignment someday,â she said offhanded while she thought. âIf her shirt was ripped she was in a rush or out of it when she came this way. Shirts donât get stuck to branches during leisurely strolls. This leads behind the trailers the employees are staying in.â She beckoned down the path they were on.

At first when Carolâs eye was caught by the flash she turned to see Peter and assumed he was getting shots for the yearbook, but then she noticed he was really focused. He must be investigating, she figured since she had been doing snooping of her own. She picked her way through the perpetual crowd of the carnival to meander behind him. Her own investigation had mapped the back part of the property that housed the carnival staff and management. Clearly the management lived better than the staff. Peter paused and she caught up with him.Â
âWhat is it?â She when she was close enough for him to hear her low voice.

Peter took what little information Miss Dodson gave him and ran with it, there was absolutely no time to waste. He walked around the last building the missing girl was spotted at with his camera taking pictures of every little thing that stood out in his eyes. Of course the camera flash would cause heads to turn, not that flashing lights werenât normal at a carnival. This was better than the alternative, putting on the suit, but he needed hard evidence before he tried anything. Sure Fury would be a little, âOk probably a lot pissed,â if he found out Peter was investigating on his own. But this was something he needed to do. Journalism was second nature to him, just like swing rooftop to rooftop. It was the calling he truly loved. Peter continued walking until he found a piece of fabric on the ground, torn, stuck on a broken tree branch that looked to be there for some time.

âIâm still really confused how you ended up there in the first place. What even? Wicked bad luck.â Carol snickered and pushed her hair back from her face. âOkay, so then?â
âBet you didnât think I would fail an interrogation without being guilty of anything,â Illyana said, calm but exasperated. Throwing her hands up, and smirking, she added, âBut I talked my way out of it eventually so youâre still stuck with me.â

âI did my embarrassing costume which was basically a girly version of my mentorâs so now Iâm looking way better.â Not that the first costume have been bad, there were pieces of it she absolutely loved in fact. Maybe someday she would come back to it. âThat may a new contender. Everyone is pretty awesome, even the non-powered are pretty cool like Peter and Bucky. I would say Erikâs powers may be my favorite, magnetokinesis.â
It was good to get out of the weeds. Gesturing as she thought the costume bit through, she said, âSo youâre saying that you could go through an embarrassing and awkward costume phase, but you wonât. Because youâre serious about this.â Even if the brand comment was a joke, Illyana could tell that Carol knew what she was doing more than she did. âBesides impeccable taste in shoes? Mutant teleporter, non-mutant sorceress, C student. Whatâs the coolest power slash ability combo youâve seen here?â

âReally? I mean I donât love cooking, but I wonât starve. Iâm working on that one great âimpress the guy dishâ but it isnât there yet so I guess Iâll just have to be generally impressive with okay spaghetti. Burgers though, really? How about you make a burger looking cake and just fool everyone instead.â She kept step with Gwen, directing their path gently in case Gwen was not quite 100% with the campus layout yet as they made their way to all powerful food.
âAlright, Iâll add that to my list of food places I need to visit.â She said with a grin. Gwen wondered for a moment what restaurants this universe actually had. After all, she hadnât really had a chance to visit any yet. âWell, then I must be a special kind of person. Iâm absolutely horrific at any form of cooking. I can kinda bake though so Iâm not completely hopeless.â Honestly, she just didnât have the patience to cook. It was so much easier to get take out.

âPretty handy sense to have,â she said with a chuckle. It was an honest sense to have, she would admit she was good looking, no point in beating around the bush. âBut thatâs all the best kind,â she said as she linked their arms. âYou donât love swirling at high velocities? Remind me to nave take you flying then. How about the one where you spin but it is almost totally dark so weâre on even ground?â
âYou can call it a sixth sense. Or in my case a fifth.â the young man joked as it was actually something obvious to him, he could hear the heartbeats of people racing as she walked by, some would even get their skin too hot, turned their heads to have a better look at her. Plus, she smelled good, her hair moved softly on the breeze. However, those were details that Matt would keep to himself. He listened to her steps and reached for her arm as she came closer. âSo, what ride are you going to try? Please donât pick one that will make me puke.â

âEh,â she said for explanation. It was mostly just a gut feeling and initial annoyance, not real beef.
Her own senses, especially that one she could not quite put her finger on, but that told her when really bad things were going to happen right before they did were alert, but not alarmed. âMaybe, but it might just be something magic. Maybe he got ADT.â She was too annoyed to back off now so she twisted the handle and pushed the door open hard. It flung open to reveal a room very different than the common living room in her own dorm.A large portrait of a gold city took up most of onewall and another was plated in mirrors. The walls were a warm tan with ornate door frames leading from one room to the next, in a middle of the room a plush quatrefoil pattern settee with scroll wood working took up most of the space over the fluffy white rug strewn with lush pillows.
âSeriously? Does this room seem bigger than yours? For real.â
âI sense some history,â he teased, though he also starts to find their deed questionable as he does not intend to get on Lokiâs bad side. He hasnât seen it yet, and everything is telling him that it should stay that way.
He approached the door and brushed his hand over the lock, to his surprise, he did not sense any enchantments or anything like that, just a regular albeit heavy metal lock like the one for his room. So much for being a school for super powered people, thought theyâd make the dorms more secure. With relative ease, he worked the lock out and unlocked the door carefully, keeping his senses alert. Though something does feel off and he couldnât explain it, he turned to Carol before opening the door, âis it just me, or something doesnât feel right?â
#I have an idea about his room!#Loki redecorated!#And probably warded his room so none shall pass#since Pietro kept stealing his stuff#Except now that doesn't matter#idk#he also probably set up a tracking on the door usage so he shall know#erik#eisenhardt x

âTrue, pity they donât just sell that stuff at Best Buy. It would be very popular for Christmas this year.â She had no idea what had happened to the machine itself and really hope Mar-Vell has destroyed it. As nice as the powers were an alien wishing machine should not be just left hanging around.
Carol listened to his explanation with interest. Discovering his powers were broader was amazing and he had even needed to coin the term. âMagneto-kinesis,â she said slowly. âI like it. Fancy.â She smiled and opened the door for him to enter.
âYouâre on. I think I like using powers a little too much to be safe.â It wasnât her fault if it was hard to imagine going back to regular levels or walking everywhere after this. It was better being super. âGrab a table, Iâll be back.â She made her way to the bar.
âWell you do have your alien technology to back you up,â he chuckled, as decent as the concept of being surrounded by other super humans are, it also feels too good to be true. How is it that they are not constantly being targeted by âthose humansâ or other super human armies? Surely this academy is not completely unknown to the rest of the world, or is this academy already secretly working with the government? He does remember people repeating mentioning something about HYDRA, but the way people generally act around this place as he has observed so far seems way too laid back.
âYea⊠I about it read it before, it basically means to mentally manipulate metal.â he explained, though given his discovery of his control over magnetism, ferrokinesis no longer seems the accurate and conclusive term. âWhile itâs true that itâs what I mainly do, I kind of, you know, not exactly that. I think rather than controlling the metal itself, I control it by manipulating magnetic forces. If that makes any sense, basically, itâs like I hold control over all forms of magnetism.â Heh, that got quite technical, but as Carol earlier have displayed her interest and passion in super powers, he also felt slightly enthusiastic about sharing his own discovery. âI guess you could call it, Magnetokinesis? Heh, that doesnât sound too bad.â He almost wanted to bite his lip to hold in his chuckle, heâs already being much more friendly and open than he intended to.Â
âCharming,â he commented when Carol looked down at her attire, he wasnât sure if this whole deal is really appropriate for a school club, but heâs really not one to judge. âWell, that wonât get us too damned, maybe afterwards we could chill somewhere spacious. If youâre up for it, why not do some power testing?â
