If you’ve ever wondered how reposting hurts artists- yesterday I found a post from 2012ish featuring one of my Sherlock/Doctor Who pieces. That post had 17,604 notes. It wasn’t my post. My post of that art had 0 notes.
Apparently I saw the post once when it was at 6k because an artist I admired reblogged it, but at that stage I was very unwell & not experienced enough with Tumblr to realise what effect it might have.
Looking through the notes now I see that in the six years since then-
Several people got the design as a tattoo.
A number liked it enough to want custom designs but didn’t know how to contact me so that’s approximately £300 I didn’t get a chance to earn.
Someone used that art in the front cover of a comic by accident and while the company fixed it after I contacted them that’s exposure that it’s far too late to capitalise on now.
If you like an artwork that you find off tumblr, please, please I am begging you search for the artist’s name and see if they do actually have a Tumblr you could reblogged from instead. If you’re an artist search your username(s) every so often to see if your work has been taken.
A few hundred quid might not seem like a lot, but that’s a few months of income for me

Things I Wish I Knew Earlier In Fandom
But maybe these will help somebody now.
Most of your fandom experience is shaped by who you follow. Find a good group of people and stick with them.
Support your favs and a lot of them will become your friends, or at least be friendly back to you.
Just unfollow people who bring unwanted content or negativity onto your dash.
Block people who cause you stress. It’s not worth your time to focus on parts of fandom that don’t make you happy.
Blacklisting words/tags is a tool you are allowed to use as much as you need to.
Don’t feel like you have to pretend to like things that make you uncomfortable in order to fit in. Set healthy boundaries for yourself.
Never tag your hate. Never send hate anons to someone.
Content creators love getting comments, seeing people gush in the tags on reblogs, and getting fans in their inbox. It’s the best way to motivate them to keep making awesome stuff.
If there’s certain content you want to see but it doesn’t exist yet, then make it. Draw the thing, write that fic. If you can’t, then comission an artist or writer, or send someone a prompt if they’re open to it. If you can’t do that either, then write meta or headcanons about it. Put it into the world.
Create what you love. Do it for yourself first and foremost, and if even one other person likes it too, then that’s a bonus.

No Description is Better Than A Wrong Description
I was playing a 8th level Wild Mage in a 3.5 pathfinder game. He was, shall we say, a bit odd. My DM learned the hard way that all info he gives in game gets played in game. And so it went as this;
DM: You see a small creature emerge from the wall. It bellows in rage as charges to attack! What do you do?
Me(Malvinius Sumpterbatch): I would like to do a knowledge check. What do I roll?
DM: Give me a knowledge nature.
Me: (rolls dice) natural 1
DM: You think that it’s called a snow flea.
Me to the party: It’s called a snow flea. They have a bite attack (I “know” this because they have huge teeth). They’re not very dangerous though just a nuisance.
To the DM: I cast magic missile. 13 points of damage!
DM: You see that as your missle strike him he collapses as the magical energy travels through his body.
Me: See harmless..
DM: As he falls to the floor you all hear yelling coming from a hole in a nearby wall. Cleric it’s your turn.
Cleric: I move to the hole to see what’s making the noise.
DM: As you get to the hole a snow flea charges out and stabs you with a dagger. 20, possible critical. 20, possible instant kill. 20…
DM to the party: You see the snow flea charge out of the hole, leap up, and stab the cleric in the throat, killing him instantly!
Me: I WAS WRONG RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!
In reality the “snow fleas” were actually mites and relatively harmless we just had some bad luck, but needless to say that was just one instant that caused the party not to trust the wizard when it came to identifying creatures.
