I've been replaying Kanato's route from the first game and honestly... I've really changed my perspective on it once I stopped trying to put myself on Yui's shoes all the time (which is what I normally do with otome games in general). And the results? The psychoanalysis territory is a field trip to this day.

You can take Kanato's morbidly poetic quotes and put them on a book and it would be beautiful. And it makes sense the route leaves you broken just as he breaks Yui in the end, he sees himself as broken and has the need to break things that aren't.

That's my take on it.

You can take his side of the story, Yui's side and his route as a whole and get 3 separate analysis.

I mean, what I meant is just that my perspective changed once I went purely analytical on it lmao, getting horn knee with the moaning and biting asmr in your ears is kind of a consequence and it doesn’t affect me as much while going full "educational purpose eyes - and ears - only" hahahaah but EVEN THAT complexity (the noncon scenario mixed with the nsfw asmr making you question your morals) is interesting to me. I'm saying this stuff based off the fact I don't consider myself into these kinds of kinks which is funny but HERE I AM hahahaha

And it made me appreciate the game more and do something I personally like to do which is explore territory to find healing even in the most broken depths of despair. I like to explore with these possibilities the game didn’t present us with.

With the first game, that is, because I know they have more development -with Yui - on the other games. But yk, I don't have easy access to them and I'm too lazy (and busy) to look for different ways to play the other games.

Tldr: i also wish it was just a psychological horror but I think it can be appreciated as that even if it fucks you up which is what happens to me lol

Do you like or hate Diabolik Lovers?

I like Yui, but I'm not fond of DL. I would've been fine with it if it stuck to being a psychological horror, but it's based on a Drama CD series that's non-consentual S&M play, and those two ideas mix about as well as oil in water. This causes the intended reaction for the audience to feel bad for Yui's situation, and, to some extent, the love interests, but to also be aroused by the love interests abusing Yui, which creates an odd tone throughout the games, especially when they get more plot-focused.
