Mitch can’t bring himself to look at Zahra, or the sad, pitying expression he knows must be accompanying the soft sigh that he hears her release in the next moment.

“Oh, Mitch—”

“Don’t,” he practically growls, forcing the single word through gritted teeth. If he pretends hard enough, he can imagine the shaking in his hands is just from gripping the strap of his bag too tightly, and that Zahra might think so as well. “Just… don’t. It doesn’t matter. It really doesn’t.”

“Mitch—”

“I said, don’t. I’ll be fine. See you on patrol later.” And with that he briskly exits the room, unable to talk about it any longer. He just needs to focus on work again, like he always has before. Get back into the groove of things, and everything will be fine. He’s Mitch Williams. He’ll bounce back from this. He has to.

I’m Mitch Williams.

...And yet the catchphrase has never felt more hollow than it does echoing back to him now.
