Pakunoda appreciation post

Could we please all just take a minute and appreciate Pakunoda?

This is gonna be long, TL;DR on the bottom~

Y’all know I love Hisoka to death, but Pakunoda is easily my second favourite character. The 2011 anime really didn’t do her justice, far too less screentime, far too less emotion, but when I witnessed her death in the 1999 adaption, I was heartbroken.

Consider this: Pakunoda’s death would have been easily evitable. The only condition Kurapika set for her despite releasing Killua and Gon was not to disclose any information about him. She could have just chosen to stay quiet about what happened on the airship, search for a nen exorcist by herself and she also could have easily gotten Hisoka, not being a member anymore, to search for Chrollo in the prospect of a fight in order to bring him to the exorcist.

But she didn’t do any of that, instead she gave up her life for the safety of the people that were dearest to her. Maybe she did not notice that Kurapika indeed would not kill anymore of the spiders, being as emotionally worn out as he was.

What she wanted, and I’m 100% sure about that, was Chrollo’s safety. She valued his life higher than hers, probably higher than the lifes of any of the spiders, that’s why she engaged in the exchange in the first place when even Chrollo had explicitly told her and the troupe that his life did not matter as long as the spider was safe.

Moreover, she did not take the opportunity of cooperating with Hisoka once they left Chrollo. Hisoka had seen and heard everything that was going on and he could easily have told the rest of the spiders, but Pakunoda decided against it. I think it wasn’t because she felt betrayed by him, I highly doubt she had trusted him in the first place. 

Much rather, it would have been because she did not want to sell Chrollo to Hisoka, as she ought to know the only payment he would accept was a fight against Chrollo once he got his Nen back. Pakunoda knew, that Hisoka was dangerous, maybe she even doubted that Chrollo could get out of a fight with him alive, so she chose death over inviting peril back to her home.

Pakunoda is a character by far not explored enough, not in the Manga, not in the Anime (especially not in the 2011 one, I was so disappointed) and I feel she is highly underappreciated in the fandom. What I hear times and again, especially from men, is that Pakunoda was simply not attractive enough to deserve being loved with the passion as I love her. Her nose, her eyes, her tall physique, her closed up character, that all simply didn’t cut it.

True, Paku is an untypical woman in Anime, she doesn’t cater to its female “beauty standards” apart from her curves, she’s not feigning cuteness, she’s not the over-the-top Tsundere-type, she’s not a sidekick to a male protagonist but a strong character all by herself. She loved Chrollo with an intensity that she was ready to give up herself for his safety. I cannot and I do not want to judge the characteristics of her love, be it romantic or platonic or whatnot, and it also doesn’t matter.

I personally see her as the loving mother. The troupe was the only home she had ever known and albeit Chrollo stating otherwise, I guess she was convinced that it would fall apart without him. And she could not risk that.

TL;DR: Pakunoda is great, because she gave up her life for what she loved most and she was probably one of the most human and caring characters in the whole series, albeit being in the Troupe. She was beautiful, because she did not fit the Anime beauty standards and it is sad that she is so underappreciated by the 2011 anime and the fan community. If I could make her my girlfriend, I would.
