Anyone talking about 'curses' and 'letting curses out if you open things' on the Pyramid post, but also y'know Ancient Egypt in general?
Thanks for perpetuating Orientalist othering! That's pretty racist of you!

Reminder that people aren't entitled to see into your decision-making process unless you've agreed that they are. Just told a business acquaintance that I'd "just finished up my previous commitment". It's not their problem to know that it was DND.

I think that it’s difficult for anyone who wasn’t of age in 2001 to fully appreciate just how fucking bonkers American culture went in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. I don’t even mean the wave of hate crimes and military invasions; I mean things like, overnight, American TV shows went from depicting torture as a great evil to depicting it as a Good and Necessary Thing to Defend the Homeland; cafeterias in government buildings in Washington DC started listing french fries as “freedom fries” after Jacques Chirac opposed the invasion of Iraq; there was an NHL hockey game in 2002 where the guy who was to sing the Canadian anthem had his car set on fire by a frenzied mob chanting “USA! USA! USA!”; Evanescence had to add aggressive male rapping as a backup vocal to “Wake Me Up Inside” because her label was concerned that the culture had become too feminised; there was a government “terror alert” system that, every few days, would issue vague threats and warnings about formerly innocuous behaviours; Donald Rumsfeld briefly became a sex symbol; they postponed the release of Spider-Man for reshoots to incorporate more patriotic imagery; and all of this is barely scratching the surface.

The Flying Spider-monkey Tree Fern 🌿
Sphaeropteris lepifera, synonym Cyathea lepifera, the brush pot tree, is a tree fern that grows in the mountains of East and Southeast Asia, which can grow up to 20 feet tall. The plant has existed for over 300 million years and is considered a living fossil. Wikipedia
Class: Polypodiopsida
Kingdom: Plantae
The tree ferns are the ferns that grow with a trunk elevating the fronds above ground level. Most tree ferns are members of the "core tree ferns",

I think the next Metroid game to be positioned chronologically after Dread should reverse the trend of making Samus smaller and more delicate-looking with every successive instalment and put her right back where she was circa Super Metroid (i.e., six-foot-whatever and two hundred pounds). I think this discrepancy should be diegetically acknowledged exactly once, entirely in passing, as part of a long, technobabble-laden sentence containing the phrase "metroid DNA", then never come up again.

my first reading in my African history class this year is about why using “tribe” to refer to ethnic groups stems from a racist desire to make African conflicts sound primitive or stemming from a desire to pretend that these are just ancient conflicts that have always existed. great article and I also feel like I’m vicariously experiencing the bullshittery that this author has been subjected to from people they’ve tried to talk to about this. like the article remains extremely professional but you can just hear in the tone that they’re talking through gritted teeth, you can practically see the customer service smile
[ID: a screenshot from a section of the article titled “But why not use ‘tribe’? Answers to common arguments.” Under the bullet point for the argument “Africans talk about themselves in terms of tribes” is written, “Commonly when Africans learn English they are taught that tribe is the term that English-speakers will recognize. But what underlying meaning in their own languages are Africans translating when they say tribe? Take the word isizwe in Zulu. In English, writers often refer to the Zulu tribe, whereas in Zulu the word for the Zulu as a group would be isizwe. Often Zulu-speakers will use the English word tribe because that’s what they think English speakers expect, or what they were taught in school. Yet Zulu linguists say that a better translation of isizwe is nation or people.” /end ID]
translation: “ ‘Oh ho ho but some Africans themselves say tribe!’ You dipshit. You fucking donkey. When someone has a word that means “nation” or “people” in their own language but then when they learn English YOU TELL THEM IT TRANSLATES TO “TRIBE” then THAT WILL BE THE WORD THEY USE. Maybe if you LISTENED TO THE LINGUISTS OF THAT GROUP you’d have more accurate information. Asshole.”
each point is repeated over and over with like five different examples because you just know there are dipshits out there who will keep arguing.
to the anonymous author of this article for the Africa Policy Information Center I hope you have a good day every day and experience fewer people being assholes about this, your patience is actually legendary

What is happening?
The Sami are an indigenous people who live in Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Russia, who has historically faced discrimination and cultural genocide and still do today. Sami activists are currently trying to shut down the Norwegian government to protest Human Rights violations that are happening at Fosen, where a windmill farm is hindering their traditional reindeer herding.
How to help:
Educate yourself on the Sami people and their history
Support and share their protests online
Participate in support rallies and show up and support their protests in Oslo if you can
Email the Norwegian minister of oil and energy
Donate money to the activist to cover arrest fees for those who have been detained
Sign the Amnesty petition

This may look cool, and be useful for you, but you should make sure you aren't harming your local environment by using up rainwater that would become runoff. If you live in a desert or somewhere experiencing drought, or if you live somewhere experiencing an overuse of runoff, look into something like xeriscaping or similar stuff instead!

#I live in a desert with *extreme* overuse of runoff#to the point of causing dangerous chemicals from lakebeds to fly into the air#so keep a mind for your environment!#also I am by no means an expert on any of this#(sadly)#so your best bet for getting more information would be asking groups local to you involved with the environment
