In Senegalese folklore, the Wolof people of Goree Island have stories of seeing beings they call "Yumboes". These Yumboes are described as being around two feet tall, with pearly-white skin, and silver hair. They are said to be the African equivalent of the European folklore of "fairies" due to their small stature.

According to the townsfolk, the Yumboes live beneath the Paps Hills, and come out to dance in the moonlight. They feast on large tables, served by partially invisible servants who only have their feet and hands visible. The Yumboes eat corn stolen from humans, and fish, which they catch on their own. They are also said to invite both natives and foreigners to their feasts.
