Okay, let's live better, know more, and have fun. All right, let's talk about one of the most common forms of arthritis, osteoarthritis. Okay, now you don't need to work in surgical services to know someone that's now bionic from a joint replacement. 'Cause when it gets bad, the pain and stiffness can get unbearable, and surgery gets people back to living their vida loca, but let's back the truck up. What is osteoarthritis, anyway? Okay, well work with me now. We know that words that end in itis refer to inflammation, right? And osteo means bone, osteoporosis, osteomyelitis, Ah-steal-yo candy. If I'm jonesing for some Mike and Ike's, no lie. But arth, okay. Osteoarthritis. Well, the blank bones connected to the blank bone. We got joints. So we have osteo, bone, arth, joint, itis, inflammation. Inflammation involving the bones and joints. Basically, osteoarthritis is when the cartilage of the joints gets all worn out. Now we all know what cartilage is. It's that firm tissue that protects the bones when they rub up against each other, right? Now, when that gets worn out, we got problems. Okay. We're talking pain from having two bones rubbing together without any protection, which doesn't sound safe no matter how you interpreted that. And for our word of the day, when those bones rub together, we can hear that grating and crunching sound, and that's called crepitus. So pain and stiffness and no mobility. Meanwhile, your body's like this, let's ease the pain. So a bunch of fluid gets sent by your body to the joint making it swell. We call this an effusion. So why is this happening?
