Eco-Friendly Cleaning Products You Already Own
You’re looking at a massive spill on your floors and you’re out of your favorite cleaning product… before running to the store to buy some, just take a look inside your pantry!
Some of the best (and safest) cleaning products are already in our kitchens. Not only are they all-natural and cost-effective, but you can be at ease knowing your DIY cleaning supplies are safer for the environment and your family.
We polled some NYC home cleaners for their best homemade cleaning product tips—and they did not disappoint. Rather than exposing your family, pets and furniture to harsh cleaning agents, our cleaners have got a few DIY tricks for you to try.
You’ll be surprised how far white vinegar, baking soda, and essential oils can take you, and you’ll wish you made the switch ages ago!
The Ultimate All-Purpose Cleanser
From your kitchen:
One part warm water
One part hydrogen peroxide
Two parts distilled white vinegar
Lemon or lime rind
Five drops of your favorite essential oil (optional)
A few drops of dish soap (optional)
Combine all ingredients in an empty spray bottle, shake well, and clean away! This is a convenient and efficient option for general purpose cleaning, and leaves your home smelling delightful.
The Ultimate Grout Cleaner
From your kitchen:
One part water
Two parts distilled white vinegar
Three parts baking soda
An old toothbrush
Combine the items in a bowl, making sure your mixture does not bubble over. Dip the toothbrush into the mix and scrub the grout of your walls and floor. Allow the mixture to sit for a few minutes before rinsing with water. With a few household items, you can leave your floors or walls looking fresh and new!
The Ultimate Glass Cleaner
From your kitchen:
Two parts water
One part 70% rubbing alcohol
One part distilled white vinegar
A few drops of your favorite essential oils (optional)
Combine the items in a spray bottle, shake, and shine away! Leave your home smelling like your favorite scents while also getting rid of the streaks on your windows and mirrors, all with a cost-effective and all-natural glass cleaner.
Avoid toxic fumes, degrading chemicals, and the harsh impact on our environment that most cleaning products have with these basic household recipes. Creating your own all-natural, safe, and low-cost cleaning supplies is as easy as one, two, three!
Attention: avoid using any acidic products such as lemon or vinegar on your granite or marble furniture, as it will etch away at the stone.
Also, when using any essential oils in your mixtures, it may help to add them to castile or dish soap first, so that when added to a liquid mixture, it disperses properly and does not settle when unused.
Happy cleaning!
