Nussbaum says that our pursuit of the good life is dependent on luck and chance, and exposed to the possibility of failure and calamity in various different ways.
I somewhat agree and disagree because I believe that we have the power to make our lives a good life. And our lives can’t only be dependent on luck and chance because most people as well don’t experience luck or any chances in life. Some people in order to have a good life or the life they want have to work ten times harder than others. And although we are exposed to failure and calamity more than luck and chance. I feel like life is more dependent on those two more than luck and chance and also because I also feel that failure and calamity builds who we are as a person.
If I were to accept this argument it would totality make me think differently about the things I value. And knowing that if I fail on certain things and it is not my fault makes me want a little relief but knowing me my conscience would be telling me that I should’ve done more on the things I was achieving.

I feel like we seek out things that provides a sense of danger and fear is because it's very exciting for most. The adrenaline rushing through our body as we are going to do something we aren't supposed, is a great feeling for most. As well as, it motivates some people to do things out their comfort zones. And once they realized nothing has happens to them they increase their motivation to take risks in the future. In which, this kind of explains why we love watching tradegy films. Since in tragdey movies the good guy always wins in the end or the bad guy gets what they deserve. Which is why some people enjoy those films.

In this week's lesson, I have learned a lot about Martin Luther King, since in general education they give students little information about him. I was shocked to hear and see the letter that the FBI send to King and telling him to commit suicide which was something I never expected. As well as that, he was inspired by different types of people around the world and historical figures that disobey laws in their time period. Such as Monhandas Gandhi who is from India in which King incorporated some of Gandhi’s famous protest, into the Civil Rights Movement. As well as, the legacy he leaves behind and the way he risked his life for thousands of African Americans and for his family. I have always been taught that Martin Luther King Jr was mostly famous for his “ I have a Dream” speech and the fighting for the rights of African Americans. However, throughout this lesson he should’ve been more famous for the way he risked his life and fought against oppression, which the world seemed to be against him. As well as, the legacy that he leaves for the generations that are fighting for a change in society and how he never gave hope that one day there was going to be African Americans voters and some rights given to them as humans.

Well the role that ‘Natural Rights’ played in Anthony civil disobedience is, first it’s what started her whole civil disobedience journey. In 1872, she decided to go and exercise her right to vote as a human being. However, it was illegal for women to vote and she was later arrested and fine for 100 dollars. She then went on tour to give people lectures about “Is it a Crime for a Citizen of the United States to Vote?”. And in her lectures she would quote the constitution laws about the rights everyone has but how is it that women can’t do half of the things men are doing in the 1800s. She devoted her entire life from that point to fight for women’s rights, but didn’t get the chance to see when the 19th Amendment was passed for women to vote.

I want to believe that satyagraha could always be the right solution. However, unfortunately it can’t be because throughout history there have been a lot of wars to get the rights and freedom against other countries. And sometimes people are too ignorant to realize the damage they are doing to their people or others. That sometimes fighting against violence, you have to use violence. As well as, satyagraha can be seen today with the whole black lives matter protest, but there’s always going to be a group of people that would encourage others to fight with violence. Which can be impossible for satyagraha to happen, since in history violence and war has been use a lot to get things done.

I don’t agree with Thoreau’s argument that action according to conscience is not compatible with living in a representative democracy in which decisions are based on collective agreement. Simply because I believe they are compatible in living together because I feel like they can make a strong democracy together. I strongly believe that information and consciousness is key in making decisions. Recognizing that there is something wrong in a democracy is important as well because people should be allowed to go against any injustices in a democracy. And I honestly can’t see how people who don't want to live under the democracy living conditions can live individually. Since I feel like in the long run there are going to be things that they might eventually need from the government such as money or food.  (p.s I just realized I forgot to press post before my computer die)

There’s a lot of flaws within the education system as of today. There’s diversity in the education system where there’s different types of school from the left to the right. There’s schools for the rich kids, the gifted and talented kids and for kids that don’t have all the resources to have a better education system. As well as, public schools don’t have the resources to give students a better education. I would definitely like to see some radical changes within education such as teaching kids things that will be very beneficial for them in the future. For example, in math class instead of teaching them all these equations and formulas, they should teach them how to do they’re taxes or how to purchase a house and the steps. And if we were to follow Socrates' guide for education, the education system would definitely look different from today’s. Since students won’t be learning the general education that is given, but an education where they know the truth of everything.

'It is just like the case of a man who learns by heart the angers and desires of a great, strong beast he is rearing, how it should be approached and how taken hold of, when - and as a result of what - it becomes most difficult or most gentle, and, particularly, under what conditions it is assumed to utter its several sounds, and, in turn, what sort of sounds uttered by another make it tame and angry' (The Republic p.172-3). Socrates definitely doesn’t believe in democracy and doesn’t want his Just City to be ruled through democracy. He believed that if demos could vote by birthright, people would make foolish decisions, since everyone can’t be a philosopher. He also believed democracy would lead to people choosing some whose popular and unskilled to rule, while the skilled but superficially worst ones would be dismissed. And in a way it does and doesn’t describe the way public discourse and political debate looks like in today’s democracy. Although recently people have made a foolish decision in voting for a President that doesn’t know what he’s doing but as a team behind him that probablys does all the work. However, people are entitled to vote for whoever they want because they have that freedom and will to do so. Sometimes decisions are made due to anger or wanting changes but this democracy is run by people that can relate to others and are very knowledgeable on what they are doing.

I somewhat agree with the noble lie Socrates tells because I like the image he has created for the city to be just. However, in a perfect world that would work and everyone would believe in every myth or lie that is told and do the things that they are told to do to be happy. However, the fact that the rulers are allowed to lie to people, just so they can be afraid of death doesn’t sit right with me. And our society definitely has a lot of noble lies. One of them being that everyone has equal rights, which is definitely not true. Especially in America if you’re a person of color doing the same thing as a white person whatever that person is doing is considered automatically wrong. And although there’s a lot of programs created for people to have the same rights and opportunities, if you don’t have qualifications those people are turned down. Especially,  now since there is a pandemic going on, a lot of people are turned down for healthcare.

The paragraph I find very important in the book, ‘The Republic of Plato’ by Allan Bloom, is when Socrates said “For my part, Cephalus, I am really delighted to discuss with the very old,” I said. “Since they are like men who have proceeded on a certain road that perhaps we too will have to take, one ought, in my opinion, to learn from them what sort of road it is-whether it is rough and hard or easy and smooth…” (pg 4, Bloom). This is important because first, this is what let Socrates question and talk about justice. And he’s basically telling Cephalus that people make their own choice and choose what they want to learn and take for themselves. Not everyone is going to listen to every rule there is and things seem to change as time goes on.
