"A Starry Night" is absolutely amazing in real life. What I never saw until I saw this one is the texture of the painting. Even from a distance, one can see the rivets, bumps, and perfect unsmoothness of the painting. It fantastically captures the feeling of a starry night so well. What was also amazing was seeing a crowd of people gathering around the painting, at first because it was famous, but if one were to look at their faces, it was evident that they understood. They understood why this painting has been loved for generations. Now I understand it too. It was remarkably easy to appreciate this painting as a theologian.

I loved this footage of the elephant. It was a trained elephant that was simply laying down and rising on cue. What made it art though was how the camera vividly brought the elephant "to life." By this I mean that the videographer was able to capture the look and essence of the elephant. One could almost smell and touch the elephant because the visual was so real. Also part of this was due to the fact that there were different projections showing different angles of the elephant playing at the same time.

I love these two different peices of art. My group went to the MoMA. The top picture is called "the false mirror". It really grabbed my attention because of the simplicity and the oddity of it. The artist loved to move around and displace things especially with the human body and this really got to me. The second is a Warhol and I loved it because it's something that you only ever hear about elsewhere and it was captivating to see it in person

The statue of the ballerina by De'Ga has always been my favorite. My mom has had a smaller version of the statue of her in our house for years and I am always amazed at her beauty. I love how it is so difficult to tell if she is a child or a young woman. She has the innocent face of a child but a mature body. She is just natural and looks like she is enjoying ballet more than anything else. The painting underneath was something new for me. I unfortunately did not record the name of the painting but I stood and admired her for quite some time. The picture taken with my iPhone does it absolutely no justice of how beautiful this painting was in real life. It was breathtakingly large which forced me to stand back to gaze at it. The lady in the photo has such beauty and such longing on her face. I would like to know what it is she is waiting for or missing. Overall this painting was gorgeous in real life and I couldnt help but stop and admire these two pieces of art.

My group and I went to the met. I like the painting because it was really big and it is a inspiring piece of history. As we walked In to the gallery it took up the whole wall which was neat. The other one is stained glass which was beautiful.

I chose the first picture because I really liked the coloring of the painting. The painting is very detailed from the color of the rocks and water, to the reflection of trees in the water.
The second picture stood out to me because it reminded me of something we looked at in class on day.

This picture reminded me of The School of Athens by Raphael.  You have Peter (or who I think is Peter) pointing up to heaven, with other observers taking notice of the scene.  They are healing a lame man, doing as Christ told them by furthering His work of the kingdom.  I liked this painting mainly because it reminded me of the painting by Raphael which in itself is powerful in the area of philosophy.  This picture too is powerful in religion.  It is also interesting that the person I think to be Peter is wearing a purple sash, something very royal.  Could that be because he was to be the one upon which the Catholic Church was to be built?

For some odd reason this picture stopped me when I was in the Met.  I think the first thing that stopped me is the name of the painting.  It is called Allegory of Painting; I am not fond of Allegories.  This one captures my attention.  The woman and child (showing diversity of age) are dumbstruck by the images shown within the mirror.  According to the description, they are seeing the outside world.  This is a connection with paintings which are also windows or mirrors of society and the world around us.  The painting is very simple, yet it is powerful in both its dark tones and the simplicity of the subject.  They both are fascinated by what they see and what they are being told.  I was equally fascinated with the painting as they are with the mirror.  This is probably the only allegory i enjoy.

The MoMA - Magritte display
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Found these two pieces my Magritte Very interesting. Couldn’t take a physical picture of them in the museum’s anti camera zone, so pulled these offline. Dual portraits as I understand it Magritte’s surrealism brings a striking idea of individualism in portrait alive. I feel that in these pieces he asks the question of what is individual identity, and points at the idea that it can’t be captured. #CalvinO’Boyle

The first picture is great because it is so unexpected. Who has a quilt with a zombie on it? Also with both of these I never really considered quilts as art but when i walked into this museum and saw that was all they had I was surprised, but it was really cool. Its a amazing the time and effort that had to go into putting these things together. I mean my mom quilts regular quilts and she spends forever on the, but these are very very in depth. Like I said the first one is the one that I was most taken back by because I never thought I would see a zombie in art, let alone on a quilt. It's also laid on top of a 3D background that adds depth and color to the piece.
The second piece is just classic. Over the past coupe of years I have gotten more and more into hunting because of my pastor up here so the first thing I do when I see this is count the points to see how big of a buck it was. Its cool because its basic but also because I haven't ever seen this on a quilt before. I particularly like the black thin mesh that they used to shadow the piece making it look almost like the deer is popping out of the quilt.

I chose these two pieces of artwork because I thought they were unique. They look like paintings but they are actually quilts. I think that the artist has amazing skills. They one is actually a self portrait. I also love the background in the red one. It is uniform, yet not uniform at the same time. I think that it is intriguing. -Kami Galvin

The top picture is of a statue made by Edgar Degas. This caught my attention while walking through the museum. I like the different textures of the statue.
The second picture is a painting done by Van Gogh. I like Van Gogh and the way he paints.

I went to the American Folk Art Museum and these two piece of art caught my eye by Luke Haynes. This museum has a lot of art pieces that are quilts and some are made out of paper which is different from your typical painting. The first piece of art is a quilt and I thought this one was cool because the man looks like he is dancing and it looks as if he is jamming to his favorite song and he is really into it, so I thought that was really cool. The second piece of art caught my attention because these two rappers, Jay-Z and Kanye West were rappers that I once loved and enjoyed listening to. In addition, they are popular artists and it was cool to see how both of their faces were intertwined into this piece. This particular piece is made with sheets, blue jeans, dress clothing and metallic thread. It’s entitled “Rags to Riches”. I really like this title because it tells a story of these two artist. For example, Jay-Z was this young man from Marcy Projects in Brooklyn, NY now he is a worldwide artist. I thought this was pretty cool.

These where two pieces of art that caught my attention almost immediately. Both are quilted designs by the artist Luke Haynes. I found the first one interesting because it is just a portrait of someone doing something completely random. The second one I thought was interesting because it is supposed to be a mix of the musical artists Jay-Z and Kanye West. I thought it was very interesting and cool how the artist made this piece of art center around current well known people.

The first picture is a paint of central park. I liked this painting actually for awhile. Even if you don't live in NYC, you've seen it and it's just an enjoyable painting that depicts one of the greatest parks in the nation in Empire City. As our trip on Wednesday went on, our group went to central park and it was if that painting came alive. It was almost as if that painting was your view, but in modern times rather than the time period the painting was painted at. I absolutely enjoy it.
The second is obviously an Egyptian statue, but of the pharaoh  Amenemhat II. I've always been fascinated with history, my reason to come to bbc at first was to become a high school history teacher before i went a different direction. Either way, I find this statue fascinating just from how old it is and how it describes and speaks of the culture it's from. Absolutely love history like this.

The first is called "The Flute Player" by Valentin de Boulogne. I liked this one because of how it is just a simple thing he is doing but I feel that the artist captured the musician's emotions well through the painting.
The second is "Andromache and Astyanax" by Pierre Prud'hon, finished by Charles Boulanger de Bouisfrémont.  I've always liked the story of Troy and Achilles etc. and I found this painting interesting to look at and to really read into each individual's facial expression.  They communicate a lot about how each one is thinking about the current scene.
The third is "The Old Mill" by Theodore Robinson.  This painting, much smaller than the others surrounding it, stuck out to me.  It leaves room for imagination and exploration.  I'm not sure if someone is walking from town or into town. Either way i like how the artist captured the quaintness of the small countryside life.
