But those she held closest were her 11-year-old son, Leonardo Acosta, and her mother, Monserrate Gonzalez, 87, with whom she lived in Park Slope. "She loved dancing and salsa; she loved to laugh," Yvonne Mendez said, recalling two decades of friendship. "She had such a good sense of humor. And she was a strong woman. If she had problems, she never showed them. But she was really dedicated to her mother and her son. That's what she lived for." Ms. Medina, separated from the boy's father, had cheered all summer at her son's baseball games, and recently organized a barbecue for 35 family members in Prospect Park for her mother's birthday. On Sept. 11, she arrived at Aon Consulting, an insurance company on the 101st floor of 2 World Trade Center where she was an administrative assistant, at 8:30 a.m., a half- hour early, as was her habit. She would have been 40 years old today. Her family had planned a surprise party, but will gather instead at a small Pentecostal church she attended. "She was so kind and generous," a brother, Freddy Medina, said. "We will pray for her soul." It's 10 a.m. at the Saturday children's ministry. More songs, and prayers, and Bible stories. A woman moves among the young and restless, giving them treats to keep them quiet and attentive. She soldiers on, through all three preschool sessions, long past twilight. By 6 p.m. a now weary Abigail Medina, 46, would make the eight-block journey from Metro International Church on Evergreen Avenue to her home on Jefferson, to cook: "Arroz con gandules; that's yellow rice and pigeon peas. Served with pork — we call it pernil. Hey, we are Puerto Rican," says Mrs. Medina's daughter, Enid Marie, 18, who, along with her sister, Amy, 14, and father, Eli, constituted the other focus of Mrs. Medina's life. Such Saturdays, even more than the Sunday services, were the happiest moments in her week, Enid Marie remembered. Mrs. Medina's life in Bushwick was blessedly far from the pace of Wall Street, where she worked at Guy Carpenter reinsurance brokerage on the 94th floor of 1 World Trade Center. What helped her through many workdays were hymns, and one that she especially loved, Enid Marie said, starting to hum: "I am running to the mercy seat, where Jesus is calling." MEDAGLIA World Trade Center 'A WAY ABOUT HIM' The class couple way back when, a couple with two grown daughters now, Rocco and Marian Medaglia were the talk of their high school reunion this summer: "People we hadn't seen in 30 years said, 'Oh my God, you're still together!' " Marian Medaglia recalled from their home in Melville, N.Y. They shared the same bus stop in grammar school, started dating in junior high, married not long after high school graduation in Massapequa. "Any time we broke up, he'd tell me, `You know we're going to get married someday.' He had a way about him." He was a jokester, a storyteller who did not mind embellishing details. It was only natural that the Army chose him as a recruiter in the 1970's: "He could charm the pants off anybody, even make you want to join the Army," said his wife. Around Melville, she was known as Mrs. Rocco, his daughters as Rocco's kids. When ordering takeout or dropping clothes at the dry cleaner, the family never used their last name: "Rocco" was enough. Rocco Medaglia, 49, was a construction supervisor for G.M.P. Inc. and last week was putting the finishing touches on a renovation for Cantor Fitzgerald. The project kept him so busy over the summer that he missed the annual family vacation in Moodus, Conn., but he kept up with the weeding and transplanting in his beloved perennial gardens. And he always tended the barbecue. MCWILLIAMS World Trade Center JACK-OF-ALL-TRADES There are men who are handy around the house, and then there was Martin McWilliams. At age 4, he grabbed a screwdriver from his father's toolbox -- correctly choosing a Phillips head -- and dismantled the neighbors' storm door. When he grew up, there was no stopping him from tiling kitchens, installing new windows and siding, or putting up wallpaper. "He could do just about everything," said his mother, Mary, said. "He was always ready to help." Mr. McWilliams, 35, a firefighter with Engine Company 22 on the Upper East Side, had many other talents. He knew his way around cars and left behind several, including a 1963 Mustang, at his mother's house in Kings Park, N.Y. He was a fine skier and an accomplished cook, whose chicken francese was a family favorite. But there was one skill Mr. McWilliams lacked. "He could appreciate a joke, but he could never tell one," said his younger sister, Lynn McWilliams. "He would always mess up the punch line." Toward the end of Mr. McWilliams's life, he became a father for the first time. The baby, Sara, is now six months old. "I'm in love with her," he used to tell his family. MCSHANE World Trade Center THE FRIEND COLLECTOR The life of Terence McShane, so full and so brief, could be measured by his friendships. There were the buddies from Sts. Cyril and Methodius parish, St. Anthony's High School, lifeguarding, Siena College, rugby, his decade as a New York police officer, and the two years he spent as a city firefighter. "Terence was still friendly with guys he went to nursery school with," said his older brother, Kieran. "He'd bump into someone and start talking, and I'd say, `Who was that?' " "Some girl I went to third grade with," he would answer. What drew people to him? Maybe it was the way he had mastered the art of drawing the best from small moments. Take one of his approaches to fatherhood: pushing a kids-packed stroller while in-line skating. Shirtless. Along Montauk Highway. Mr. McShane, 37; his wife, Cathy; and their three children – the oldest of whom is 7 – had been living at a relative's house while their home in West Islip, on Long Island, underwent a wholesale renovation. And when he disappeared in the firestorm of Sept. 11, the Buddies of McShane banded together to finish the job. Cathy McShane was back at the house a couple of weeks ago, preparing it for her family's first night there in months, when four men in uniform appeared at the door with the awful but welcome news: they had found her beloved Terence's remains. "I told everyone all along that I didn't want to come back to the house without him," she said. "And in a way, I didn't." He did not wait to see if he could withstand challenges — he sought them out. He liked comparing his personal favorites to the critics' Top 10 lists. He was so good at "Jeopardy!" that other firefighters thought he was watching reruns of shows he had seen. He was confident enough to marry a woman almost as tall as he and as much of an athlete: when Kate and Bob McPadden played one-on-one basketball, he won the scrambles, she beat him on the foul line. Could he best his late father, a New York fire lieutenant? For years, he waited to be accepted into the department and dreamed of making captain. Confident, yes; attitude, no: Although Firefighter McPadden, 30, had a master's degree in criminal justice, as a new member of the crew he happily peeled potatoes, washed dishes and led schoolchildren around Engine Company 23 in Manhattan, saying: "Hi! I'm Fireman Bob!" Last summer was truly his championship season. He hit the tying run that helped Engine Company 38 win the Bronx title. His young marriage glowed. Kate and he were a day away from moving to Pearl River, N.Y., near his mother and siblings. So excited was Firefighter McPadden about life that he would shout, "We won, Kate, we won!" It was 1971, and the nun at the Roman Catholic hospital assured her there would be no more Vietnams by the time her son grew up. The mother, Rosanne McNulty, took comfort in those words for years to come. "But war came and got him anyway," Mrs. McNulty said. Her son, Sean Peter McNulty, 30, was a trader on the international desk at Cantor Fitzgerald. He was the first boy of five children in a close-knit Irish Catholic family — so close that Mr. McNulty was unable to stay at State University at Albany for longer than a month because he missed his family. He was also eager to start a career on Wall Street, where he began as a gofer at Prudential Securities. He eventually worked his way up to the trading desk, and later moved to Société Générale Crosby Securities. He turned down a job offer from another company to work in Hong Kong because it was too far from home. He lived just blocks away from his childhood apartment at 68th Street and York Avenue. He recently told his family that he was looking forward to quitting Wall Street and joining his mother and father, Gerald McNulty, in Venice, Fla., where they retired in 1996. He and his brother, Richard, had talked about opening a family business in Venice.
