Project Evaluation
When I was making my sprites and tiles I decided to look into the original Nokia Snake game. I found out it was in a monochromatic art style, so I decided to learn about monochromatic art and what it is. When exploring monochromatic art, I looked into a couple of different artists and saw how they used a monochromatic art style in different ways, some of the artists were deadunicornyyc and the developers for Frail Hearts. This really helped me find the art style I wanted to use for my game and it influenced the colour palette for my game a lot, this pushed my game to look more like the original Nokia Snake game. For this research I looked into Kirby Dream Land and the gameboy Tetris as both of those games were in a monochromatic style. I decided to look into snakes for my character as one of my inspirations was Snake. I looked a lot into how their heads were shaped, used their scales to move and their proportions. I wanted a good understanding of how to make a snake and what proportions to use as I thought this information would help me with my project and how to design the character for my game.
I was mostly in between two ideas that I wanted to explore, they were a drum rhythm game and the snake puzzle game, I ended up exploring the snake puzzle game. I found the snake puzzle game more interesting and I wanted to try and look into puzzles and how to make puzzles that intrigue the player. When making my game I wanted to try and have everything in one map to keep load times down. I decided against doing this and coming back to this idea for another project, as I didn’t need to do this because my game was very low taxing on a pc and wouldn’t need optimising. I had to change the snake sprites a lot as they kept on not looking like a snake head, so I researched snakes and looked into their heads a lot to make sure it looked like a snake. When thinking about the game I wanted to make I thought about accessibility and how accessible my game would be. The drum rhythm game wouldn’t be accessible to many people as it would require a different controller than the standard keyboard and mouse. I felt like the puzzle snake game would be the most accessible as it would only require the mouse.
For this project I feel like I have met my project proposal, as I have gotten everything I wanted to get done but I feel like I could have spent more time on researching and working on puzzles, making mine more interesting and fun for the player, as I feel like I didn’t spend enough time on my puzzles and could have been improved a lot more by doing more research into puzzles. If I had more time I would have added more tiles that affect the snake in different ways, like teleporting the snake to a different place on the grid or a tunnel that would allow the snake to overlap its body. I also feel like my tile grabbing script could have been a lot better, as it feels a bit clunky. Those are some things that I would have loved to have improved if I managed my time a lot better than I did. I would say I completed my project as it has a snake that moves on its own, tiles that affect the snake in different ways and a way to move those said tiles around the grid. I feel like I met my expectations for my project, I feel like I had set my expectations right for this project.
For this project I set out to explore puzzles and make a game involving puzzles. I have managed to do that, I have a game that involves puzzles. I do feel like I could have spent more time researching puzzles, making them fun and challenging for the player. If I was managing my time better I could have puzzles that were challenging and fun for the player. I will have to improve my time management skills for my next project, as I tend to spend too much time on one thing when I should be doing something else that can be done in a couple of seconds. I have learnt that some of things that seem simple actually require so much effort and I should change what I'm working on if it starts to take up too much of my time. I’ve improved my scripting skills a lot more, I have also improved my art skills a lot more and I have a better sense of what things could look like when making things that can be very long. I feel like if I added sound effects to my game it would have improved my game a lot more and made the player to be more immersed into what they are doing. I also feel like I should have made the snake sprites colours a lot more vibrate. It would have come out a lot better in game, as they look more reddish and darker compared to the UI which is the colour I wanted everything to be.

Tile Snake is a game were you control a snake by moving around tiles around a grid that will affect the snake in different ways, to collect the points to get to the next levels.

Adding snake overlaping
Ive managed to add the ability for the snake to die when eating in on itself. I got the idea from snake the game as it has the same mechanic.
how it works is it will check all the actors that are overlapping the head and if any are apart of the body it will restart the level.

I made this tutorial so the players know what they can move and how to move it. It might need some changes but other than that is think its good.

I didn’t get much done today as I was having trouble with my project evaluation. I have had trouble with it in the past and this project I was just having a writers block I guess.

Bugs in my game
When dragging the tile it would still change the direction of the snake and the player can split the body from the head. How I fixed this is by adding a branch that will check if its in placement mode and will then reset it if its not in placement mode.
The snake head kept on getting closer and closer to the body until the body just goes past it. I tried a lot of different solutions and the 1 that worked was just increasing the hit box size.

Here’s is a quick start screen I made. I had a bit of trouble with the size of the snake because at 1st I made it too small and I tried to make it look better with a background but that ended up not working, I asked my teacher and he said to make the snake bigger.
I took inspiration from Baba Is You and how the text wriggles about.

Here’s my new version for the snake as it didn’t look much like a snake and more like an alligator. As the mouth is very pointy and skinny. where as a snake has more of a wide and flat mouth. A teacher point this out to me so I decided to make the change and asked some people to see if this 1 was alright a lot of them it was good.
