SOMCES Director D.Bernard Webster represented NYIT at the Founders RoadMap to Funding Forum hosted by Zane Venture Fund. He joined the panel with representatives for the NYC Department of Small Business Services Commissioner and Venture Capital space to discuss a range of topics including diversity and inclusion in tech along with product development strategies for emerging tech startups.

The SOMCES co-sponsored the local Minority Business Development Agency's “NYC Transportation Summit” a federal agency within the US Department of Commerce. The theme was innovation in transportation bringing together Labor, Commerce, Finance, Policy and Design professionals to discuss the challenge of replacing aging regional transportation systems.

The SOMCES introduced the first-ever “Chief Technology Officer in Training (CTO-IT) Program” (CTO-IT) course offering non-technical SOM graduate students an opportunity to gain hands-on design and development skills by working with Full-Stack instructors, and lectures from guest experts. This course aims to shrink the growing technology chasm (in knowledge and proficiency) among non-technical entrepreneurs seeking to launch new ideas for tech startups. Programming will include a comprehensive survey of industry leading technology services and their corresponding consumer or business applications including but not limited to: a) machine learning/data science, b) augmented /virtual reality, c) cloud services and d) developer frameworks for online and mobile technologies. Through this format, the CTO-IT will assist SOM graduate students in becoming capable technologists proficient in product development/ management, within the context of a new technology venture. Topics/Learning Objective(s): The course will include a survey of Entry-Level Technical Training in Web/ Mobile Programming Languages, Cloud Services, and Development Frameworks including but not limited to: Cloud Services: Google Suite (eg. The SOMCES hosts a focus group with entrepreneurs from various backgrounds to gain insights into relevant course content for an update entrepreneurship education curriculum at the SOM. Feedback for several topics of discussion are as follows:

The SOM-CES Partnered with the CoECS Entrepreneurship Technology Innovation Center (ETIC) to host a joint information session for Management and Engineering students seeking business coaching, strategy and product development support on the Manhattan Campus.
The goal was to widen student awareness of the resources available across both campuses to foster their innovation of new products or businesses.

Naveed Sherwani of PeerNova and Dr. Salman Azhar of Duke University, visited the prestigious Plug and Play Tech Center and were led in their venture assessments from Fahad Aziz, founder of CareMerge which recently raised $20 million in Series B funding.

Last month @somcesnyc hosted WIBO’s graduation of new entrepreneurs on campus. WIBO is a  private non-profit organization that provides a 16-week workshops on  topics such as “How to Build a Growing Profitable Business" to men and women with the drive to become entrepreneurs. In the effort to build meaningful ties to the community, the Center for Entrepreneurial Studies sponsored this event to demonstrate the campus commitment to supporting entrepreneurship and new venture creation throughout NYC. More than 100 new entrepreneurs completed the WIBO program. Congratulations!
