One thing's really been standing out to me about the plot of Paralogism. It might solidify deception as something ingrained into Mondstadt on every level.

I've already talked about some obvious things individually:

Venti's the most suspicious character in the game. The list of subjects he's withholding important information about (some likely, some definitely), even from Traveller, includes his strength, his gnosis's location, Istaroth and time powers, Celestia, the abyss and either abyssal corruption or ties to it, Khaenri'ah, the fundamental nature of Teyvat...

Mondstadt is a disarmingly laid back and vulnerable place on the surface... with vicious monsters watching over from afar, a capital crawling with undercover agents and vigilantes, and a history of violently overthrowing leaders they don't like. Even gods.

The big 'gateway to Celestia' Barbatos statue is clearly hiding something.

It's associated with the moon- it's in the name- and that's associated with deception in tarot; let me know if any other belief systems have that as well.

That aside, the more I think about it the more examples I can find:

The aforementioned plot of Paralogism.

Forgery, misleading the Lawrences' soldiers into turning against them, was key to the success of Vennessa's revolution.

The church, peaceful and kind on the surface, employs some of Mondstadt's shadiest protectors.

Many Mondstadt characters are not as they seem; they have secrets and layers of nuance below a flat or misleading surface-level persona, or straight up LARP constantly or live double lives. Venti's king of this but at minimum this includes Diluc, Kaeya, Rosaria, Lisa, Albedo, Fischl, Stanley, Eula to some extent, that guy living in the wilderness to avoid his girlfriend...

Statues and most other depictions of Barbatos are potentially inaccurate, even varying within a single storybook in the prologue.

i wonder, actually, what albedo's perception of the world is like. every other creation linked with rhinedottir has something different about theirs - the differences in melusine vision are fairly blatant, and we know elynas and durin both see the world differently too, so i think it would make sense for albedo's vision to be different as well? it's just a question of how...

okay but "Herald of Barbatos" is an objectively hilarious title. The entirety of Teyvat believes that Mondstadt has an absentee archon, meanwhile in Mondstadt, there is literally One Guy whose whole job is to go "I have received the Word of Barbatos, will get back to you once I have deciphered his holy message." (They got drunk together the night before and Venti spent the whole time complaining about cats.)
