Once we do so, a tiny hut unexpectedly appears from out nowhere, a sanctuary in which we can refresh ourselves and take stock of our lives. There's no need to continue without rest. What's to stop us from just standing still by the side of the road for a while? After being constantly on the move, our hearts utter a sigh of relief to finally come across a resting place. There, we refresh our souls, and avail ourselves of the opportunity to replenish our forces before continuing on our way. And rest again at a later stage. As human beings, we don't grow while on the move, but during those dreams we inhabit as we stop and rest for a while. Isn't it at such time that our souls evolve?" KAZUO OHNO

Kazuo Ohno, died in 2010 aged 103. He was one of the pioneers of butoh,Japan’s striking contribution to contemporary dance. Butoh, which incorporated elements of existentialism, surrealism, German expressionism, kabuki theatre and eastern spiritual thought, was a reaction in part to the horrors of the second world war.
