The fact that Leonard Peltier will be allowed to leave prison is an incredible relief, but at the same time, commuting his sentence instead of pardoning him, putting him on house arrest for the rest of his life instead, feels like such a slap in the face to all the work activists have been doing for him. This is a disabled elderly man whose innocence has basically been proved, who has had land put aside for him in Canada. House arrest means he's still going to be under the power of the carceral system. This man has been beaten repeatedly by so-called justice system workers, and now they're going to have free access to his home. It would have cost Biden nothing to just pardon him.
