prom tickets cost a pretty penny and none of them know any guys that would be willing to spend more than a dollar on them. or, more like: they didn't know any guys who could spend more than a dollar on them. nevertheless, grazie had gotten all her girls together to try on the dresses at the department store. the fancy kind they needed at least two petticoats to really fill out the skirts. karen have nosedived into the ugliest ones she could find while maxie shyly browsed, not quite knowing what she would want in a dress.

it was good fun even if they couldn't afford the prom ( or they weren't old enough ) and got looks at the ladies working at the store. the afternoon just got better when they piled into doc's to find the guys already there. though, they loudly complained about them upon entering, they took their places with grins. they're already intermingled. hard not to be when these were the guys they'd grown up with.

graziella settles herself on a slightly wobbly stool. she leans over to roll her capri's up, but catches riff's eye next to her as she looks back up. ❝ hey, ❞ she says. she leans her heel against the lowest bar of his stool. ❝ did you hear about the dance they're putting on at the community center? ❞ if a pity invite was in the form of a dance, it would be the one at the community center. while it didn't advertise it on the flyer, it's not hard to tell they set it up for the kids who can't afford a ticket. ❝ you gonna ask anyone to it? ❞

a little quip despite her outrageous irritation. it isn't as if riff's shown up at her door in the middle of the night---but she almost wishes it was some obscene time in the morning just so he'd have a better excuse. who gets in a fight before lunch? ( who else would? ) when grazie glances at the clock, it reminds her of how soon she needs to be at work. why couldn't this have happened at a more convenient time for her!

there's only one person in her section today. and if there's only one person, what's the harm in sitting across said one person and... starting a conversation with him? it's been a slow day. three pm is an even slower hour. rhonda's surprised he's here at all. usually, action's waiting for her to finish up closer to closing. but three pm with him here is a very good hour.

doc's has been surprisingly silent. customers flit in and leave with scarred expressions. the jets barely move in case they make a floorboard creak. and karen is standing guard, glare and fists at the ready. absolutely no one is to do anything that might disturb ice from underneath his blanket of hesitantly donated sweaters. however, when she feels a stirring around her, she looks at him. ( not without casting another stare to remind everyone of her point---even if he's awake, no one should make any noise that might take him out of such relaxation. )

one hand falls from her protective stance to pat his head. karen hasn't stepped down from her seat at the table and she isn't planning on giving up such a spot. though, she smiles as she wipes stray hairs out of ice's face.

christmas carols blast from the small radio someone's smuggled into doc's. too bad the jukebox doesn't have any. if it did, they wouldn't have to be shouting over the volume when singing along. tessie hasn't heard one word since maxie started mocking ( in good jest ) mack's operetta vocals. maybe it's jingle bells? jingle bells is always a good guess. for now, she places a mug of burning cocoa in front of john and slides next to him in the booth.
