   At first the request is met with doubt, why would he nap when he could be out there training instead? Sleep wasn’t anything he needed either (if you were this tired, Ace, then maybe go sleep earlier instead), so really, there was nothing in it for Eight except lost time. But when Ace moved towards the birds there...there was something appealing about the invite. Eight wasn’t the hugest chocobo fan, definitely not in the way Ace and Machina adored the creatures, but who could find them anything but adorable. 

   A moment’s further hesitation, but then he’s shrugging, curiosity getting the best of him. He could spare half an hour on indulging the other. Some downtime was needed between the missions, moments where it was scarily easy to forget there was a war raging outside the borders, but Eight knew just as much anyone that focusing on nothing but battles would destroy them.

   It wouldn’t become a habit, though. Next time Eight’d invite Ace for physical training.

   And neither does Eight — emotional compassion so far from the thing’s he has learnt that sugarcoating things is something more difficult than fighting. But he did approach him and as such he’s not willing to give up just yet, not when Machina was starting to avoid missions and them.

   The silence in the hallway was suffocating.

   Words said out of habit, ah, right, in the last battle they announced their Commander dead.

           “ Someone of the top brass won’t like it, is all I’m saying. Just talk to someone, us or someone in Medical, anyone. I don’t want to see you getting into trouble over this “, Eight could only hope he didn’t come off as disrespectful, eyes not leaving Machina’s face even once. If anything, he hoped he had found Machina before any of his more rasher classmates got to speak with him. Speaking wasn’t exactly their forte, but Eight knew for a fact he wasn’t the worst.
