excuse me for stating the obvious but like. james gunn outright calling superman an immigrant and doubling down on it when he got backlash (because he IS an immigrant, that's the point of superman) + the in-movie dialogue of "aren't you going to read me my rights?" "you're an extraterrestrial, son. you haven't got any rights to read." + the violence of his arrest and how they torture and mistreat him unapologetically, all under the guise of "protecting america", in a film releasing during the onslaught of violent ICE kidnappings and abuse... yeah it's really no wonder right-wing knobheads are crying about this being woke. they're being forced to look directly at the reasons one of the most notorious heroes of all time would not be on their side. and that's only ONE of the reasons this movie covers

(Superman Spoilers)
Lois Lane ragebaits Superman during an interview, pours half a container of sugar into about 4 ounces of coffee and dictates an article taking down lex luthor while driving a hovercraft. They nailed her. We are so back.

James Gunn鈥檚 thesis statement for his Superman is simple and effective: "Be good. Do good. Be human despite the bad things. That is the most punk rock thing in a world so stoic and cynical."
And that鈥檚 how it should be. That鈥檚 beautiful, the new Superman movie is beautiful.

Can you believe. Can you believe that Kleya's bruises won't even have faded when everything she's been working for comes to fruition. Can you believe there might still be safehouse dust on her boots when the Death Star blows. Can you believe, against all odds, Star Wars' time-honored ability to make you see new ghosts again and again and again

I love how s2 of Andor shows us how all the sacrifices the Imperial characters make for the Empire are ultimately worthless. Syril, Dedra, and Partagaz all have different variations on the same ending. and to them Krennic is the big bad guy who represents the Empire but then in Rogue One we learn that essentially he鈥檚 in the same situation: giving everything to the Empire and it amounting to nothing in the end.

Syril realizing everything he's done has lead to this, to the slaughter of innocents. He seems remorseful. Until he sees Cassian, the man he's been hunting. And he attacks him, beats him, nearly kills him.
And then Cassian asks who he is. And Syril realizes that this hunt was pointless too.
And then he gets shot in the head.
What a fucking ending.

i love andor's refusal to be subtle in the face of rising fascism. it's not complex metaphors for the audience to unpick. it's a kick in the fucking teeth. a banner and blaring alarms. THIS IS WHERE WE ARE. THIS IS WHERE WE'RE HEADING. it's knowing there's a time and place to be gentle and knowing the here and now needs us shouting from the rooftops. it's using energy independence, that thing tr*mp harps on about, as a cover for building the death star. it's a bunch of powerful empire officials brainstorming ways to colonise a planet for capitalist gains. it's the pomp and circumstance of the upper classes used to distract from the grit and ruin of the everyday. it's the visa inspection of harvest workers. it's the brutal abuse of power over "illegals" to the point of dehumanisation. but more than that. more than that. it's people working together against these forces of tyranny. it's kellen running around trying to keep them from the troopers. it's mon mothma trying to save her daughter. it's talia putting her legal status on the line to help them. it's brasso trying to save wilmon. it's wilmon running all the way home to help bix. it's cassian choosing home over orders. it's bix fighting for her fucking life rather than giving in. it's the fight. it's the people.
