Slowly
Two things: 1. Next update confirmed this week ! It will be the last section before the guest artist portion
2. I'm messing with ways to store character images and info, I might use CharacterHub because I've never explored it before. If I do decide to use it then the goal is to get every character up with basic info/summary/gallery So far it's just an unfinished Shovel and even more unfinished Spade in here https://characterhub.com/story-worlds/vault-9

By now you probably saw my "reverting to a cat clangen" April fools day joke! I actually have been thinking about hypothetical lore even though it is a joke and it will stay object focused in this house. I figured I'd ramble about it a little for fun while working on the next update!
Refs of the cats versions (Inspector doesn't have one yet!)
I wrote some of my ideas down here (google doc)
Warning for mentions of animal death/harm in the doc (undetailed)

Even in an april fools day joke AU, Shovel's still worrying about her capability as a leader :- (
Moon ???
Hey guys, the object stuff is too much work so this is gonna be a normal warrior cat clangen from now on
Tumblr media
Happy slightly late April Fools day! I put way too much effort into this joke, and I'm not even particularly happy with a couple frames but its worth it. I had this idea for months Just to be clear this is a joke, the osc has a grip on me haha

Hihi!
I can’t express in words about how much I enjoy this Clangen! I’ve recently been really into Clangen after a while. I also was in OSC animation community for quite a while before taking a break. When I stumbled across this, I immediately read everything. The characters are so interesting and fun to see! (Splinter, you’re awesome!)
I’ve been thinking about making an OSC Clangen (I was planning to make a Clangen for some time but now I’m inspired to incorporate my old love for objects into my future Clangen comics) so I have some questions about how you run yours. Apologies if these questions have been asked in the past ^^;
How do you come up with the objectified designs for the cats?
Do you run a separate clan for the different factions alongside Vault 9 in Clangen?
How do you organize and note down events? And how many moons ahead you usually go before starting scripting the comics?
Thank you for your time reading this! I had a blast reading these comics and am excited to see more in the future! :3 ❤️
I'd move to see the one you make! If you do please let me know I'd love to read it and promote it here! And thank you so much !!
As for the questions:
It really depends, for the most part I've been basing them on their names when they join. Shovel and Spade had the prefixes Mud and Clay so they're digging instruments, Splinter had Splinter in her prefix, and so on. I have gone off book with a few for variety, or sometimes if a character's sprite looks similar to another's I'll mess with that. Like Shovel and Spade are twins because of their sprites, Red Ball and Push Pin had that identical gag because of theirs. Hehe actually looked a lot like Spade but because they joined shortly after Spade died, I didn't want to torment Shovel and made them look only subtly alike.
For the most part I don't, the 3 first factions (hush bandits, vault 13 and the institute) were the other clans in game, and I'd base their interactions on patrols and stuff. I made a file for the Hush Bandits for the special episode from their perspective. The New Order right now has 2 members in V9's file as naturally occurring loners and the rest were made to fit the scene.
I typically take short notes with what I want to focus on, and take several screenshots, I read through everything in case I need to expand on an event. I don't play very far ahead. My most recent notes go up to 145. I have some friends who have behind the scenes access to my pre-updates and I'll talk about it as it happens too.
Tumblr media
So it often looks like this, paired with screenshots like character moods and interactions, or interesting patrols, and then I plot it out in a little more detail when tying threads together. Moon 74 when I got Blue Spruce breaking the warrior code, it was when it took Car Key's security card. And Moon 73 that vague fella is Triangle, it was a "Kite meets a member of (the clan that's the foundation)" patrol.

I don't know if this has already been asked, but how do you handle changing the in-game moons into weeks? Like, since the objects age differently to the cats in-game, how to you deal with them aging in-game?
I actually go into the files and de-age them manually ! I typically keep all the adults around 50-70 moons in file, but where it gets tedious is keeping the children an apprentice (under 9) and kit (under 6). This is optional since as the creator you can interpret events however you want, I just like the apprentice and kit statutes for them since they fit better! Apricot (the apprentice) has an apprentice like role with his in game mentor too, and I usually have them patrol together so that they do their lessons together.
Early in the comic before my friend helped me figure this out, we did have an elderly character pass away from old age, since that happened in game. Some of the other characters were also getting quite old in game but luckily the de-aging in file started shortly after. Mousetrap would have been the next to go and in game she's only in her 40s 😔
I've also started recently bringing the experience down to around middle from time to time too, because it was creating a thing where new characters had a way higher chance of negative patrol results than old ones (who, living so many moons in game, would be maxed out) and though I definitely don't want to invite problems to these characters I also wanted things to be more even !

⏪, I wonder?
The surface level thing I tend to think about is of course the ghost vision with EMF, I wish that I went about it a different way. It's been soft retconned already but I feel like I could have done more or differently.
On a larger scale, if I had known about certain plot points or deaths I think I would have been able to set it up more leading up into it. Like some characters like Car Key, Exit and Roadflare missed out on a lot of development and though they still would have been around for the same amount of updates, maybe I could have given them more scenes.
Some of the really early pages are rough and there's typos and stuff I'd like to fix, but I do have a lot of fun with the spontaneity of clangen so it's just part of the process !

Clangen Ask Game - for non-warriors blogs
The original meme was really warriors focused! Which is awesome, especially in the spirit of clangen, but maybe not fitting for things like the oscgen-sphere and other clangen projects using non-cats or a non-warriors setting.
This is adapted from @/ranchclan’s ask game, which was inspired by @/moth’s-wc-aus. Some questions are the same as the original clangen incarnation and some are modified or replaced. If you want to see the original ask game check it out here! https://www.tumblr.com/ranchclan/769238004990656512/clangen-ask-game
Just like the previous one, feel free to reblog/add to it/etc
Send an ask with an emoji and oc/clangen characters!
👏 3 random facts!

Does anyone even 🌌
There's some ! None of these are strictly "true" (there's no confirmation or denying of a canon god/afterlife/etc)
We don't have any 1:1 real earth religions since this is an object world with different history and geography, but there may be some beliefs that are similar or different to what people may know.
We have:
-A lot of the characters could be lightly described as agnostic
-A non-denominational "church" room is built into the vault, for any object to worship how they see fit. While the original members of Vault 9 on its founding practiced various religions, religion slowly started to get weaned out of this particular vault. Instead there's this vague spiritual mess some members may have, and sometimes people may go in there to contemplate. Shovel doesn't have any concrete beliefs but sometimes she wishes she does, because she often feels abandoned. Timer is a stark atheist and doesn't believe in anything. Like when she told Downy Feather it was a godless land.
-A common object religion pre-war centered around some unknowable object god, that breathed the first life into object kind and gave them the power to breathe life into each other. In some religions it's interpreted as everyone having a small piece of them, and that when they die the piece returns to that original source and rejoins it.
Some versions of that belief though claim that if you corrupted your soul through evil/sin, you would be rejected and cast to earth to wander or even sent to hell. When objects say "oh my god/damn/hell/etc" it's in reference to this, though nowadays it's used commonly with people who don't really believe it.
Funnily enough where this is most prevalent with characters we've seen are some of the Hush bandits who are afraid of going to hell when they die.
-EMF Meter, after leaving his home town, had come to live in an old cathedral with a community there. The priests there took care of terrible wasteland creatures, which had nested under the church, in order to keep them calm and contained. In this setting people were told to let go of all earthly anchors, and be free, because having attachments to possessions and such is how you get anchored back to earth, in reach of demons. Over time he found out that in addition to dropping everything he owned down there, they would also push new converts or travelers into the best to feed the beast and he fled.
Even after leaving that place, he remained superstitious, believing in things like fate and demons. When his readings were malfunctioning due to his head injury, and he would hallucinate shapes and figures, he interpreted what he saw as ghosts.
-Spawning Mop is very sailor superstitious, and still has a lot of habits from her time at seas to keep bad luck away
-Blue Spruce and her family, mostly trees, believe that their life came from nature, she feels very in tune to it. She has some comfort that Shale had also come from nature (though she would have fallen in love with him no matter what object he was) and feels like her dead loved ones are still around her
-Microchip lightly practices one of the more common religions pre-war, but the now "old fashioned" version of it. He probably brought "Christmas" (object version) to the vault

did you kill splam personally, like is that a death that the simulator was not responsible for
Yeah he's not in the main simulator. Technically he does have a sprite in the Hush Bandit save file, but that wasn't used for this.
The original version of that scene, they had only threatened one bandit, but it didn't have the right impact. It had to be clear that the New Order would kill each and every last one of them if they had to, no empty threats.
As for why Splam died, it was part rng, part process of elimination. Pulling from when I was talking a little about it earlier:
Leer and # of Nails are new, and so I didn't choose them because I didn't want to give the impression that only new members die nowadays like how Outsider was recently killed. Fungus, Frame and Charger are plot relevant. Spool is the medic and so she's unlikely to be in that sort of position/she's less of a target. Thermos is sick (or possibly dead).
So then it was a little rng, though I leaned on the scale a little since Hatrack and Razor Blade are better liked by people ooc, though they weren't completely taken off the table for it.
