Short and maybe unpopular opinion about Poe's ability before I go back into the void: I don't think Poe's ability developed out of a need for escapism like many headcanons suggest (not that y'all aren't valid though, just my personal opinion), otherwise it'd have been a self-saving ability that would've put himself inside the book whenever he needed it. But no, it's a mystery, a challenge for someone else. I can only imagine it was forged by Poe's need for revenge against ranpo. It's the perfect ability to challenge him with.
