ok so

sprout is an entire empath, she feels for EVERYONE and her mood can sometimes depend on both yours and jj’s moods or whoever shes with

and say maybe one day you have to go somewhere you can’t bring sprout and you’ve got to leave her with jj. and jj was apprehensive about it because he didn’t want to stress her out but he knew that there was no other option

so after you leave, and sprout cries for a while and jj tries his hardest to comfort her and nothing seems to work he gives her one of your shirts and she ends up crying herself to sleep on a little makeshift mattress on the ground

jj ends up at the dinner table trying to fight off tears as he remembers sprouts sobs and being unable to console her like he used to but the tears couldn’t be held back

eventually sprout wakes up, wanders into the dining area in her little button up onesie, pink pacifier and a stuff in hand as she calls out for you, rubbing sleep from her eyes

“mamas not here right now, baby,” he’d say, voice stiff with tears, “she’ll be home soon,”

and her little face would scrunch and she’d waddle closer to him. she’d just look at him for a minute, taking in the fact that he’s crying and he’s sad. and then she’d reach for his hand and place it on her soft little cheek and lean into it and then she’d open her arms for jj to pick her up

and god he hasn’t felt relief like that before in his life

Being in a relationship with JJ Maybank was an oddity that never normalized.

Not even a little.

Y/n couldn’t even recall the moment they shared their first conversation. No less when they were introduced. He was a friend of a-not-exactly-friend, so there was no mutual binding in any interaction they shared. As a fresh new Kook to the Outer Banks, she didn’t even know she was a said kook. Not until a family by the name of the Camerons greeted them at dinner at the country club. They offered a particularly offensive warning to stay away from Pogues and that they were supposedly lousy company. A different species, if you will. The name was distasteful on their tongues, and Y/n ignored them the remainder of the night, starting on her fifth roll of bread.

Y/n recalled briefly the first time she saw him that night. His scarred knuckles as he served them their dishes were one of many details that pulled him from the rest. That and the rings he sported. He asked her in a posh accent if she’d like more water, and once she tilted her head up, bread still in her mouth, she paused. He was too gorgeous to be a Pogue. Eyes too bright yet mischievous, hair perfectly smooth yet mused purposely. And that smirk that formed on the corner of his mouth once she narrowed her eyes in recognition of his station in the Outer Banks. He definitely wasn’t supposed to be there.
