Very impressive, scholarly and almost forensic analysis. In awe, as usual.
Following our (almost) unanimous outpouring of grief about the Betrayal haircut and the utter lack of curls 😩😩 and inspired by @too-antigonish I present an indepth and 'scientific analysis' of Evans hair (curls edition)
First a reminder of our current predicament... namely the no curl Betrayal crop. Bonus points for scruff and the blue shirt, very many minus points for the khaki 'shacket'
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And yet we had such promising potential of curls only a few short weeks ago at the read through (I'm ignoring that this look has a feel of 'I'm late and just threw a bucket of gel on my head before I left the house')
Tumblr media
And so here begins a brief (actually not very brief) history of the Evans curl inventory
Short short - did someone let him loose with the clippers or is his barber a psychopath who has no time for curls..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2. Short and gelled but with some curl escape potential (bonus points for beard, additional bonus points for blue uniform/shirt/suit)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
3. Endeavour Pilot/very early Endeavour - admittedly its not horrendously short and it does have some curl potential but who the hell styled his hair like that...
Tumblr media
4. Short(ish) with bonus scruff. I can forgive the lack of full of curls here... for.... reasons... (@season-77 may be able to expand on said 'reasons')
Tumblr media Tumblr media
5. Curl-escape potential achieved (also bonus blue linen shirt and just *look* at him...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
6. Curls curls curls... glorious glorious curls... shorter curls, longer curls... any kind of curl (preferably slightly unkempt and falling over his forehead...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
7. Weaponised Bedhead (minus points for dirty:hot psycho, very very many bonus points for Venice Evans/Morse...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
8. Curly hair of despair
Tumblr media Tumblr media
9. Hot mess curls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
10. Honourable mention category - aka is anyone even looking at his hair at this point... (well, yes, and the curls still make it better but y'know...)

This one is called "Smile that doubles as actual light source..."
If you can't do angst and suffering, then Endeavour is not the show for you. But that doesn't mean you can't be thrilled when something a little different happens.
I've said about a million times, "Oh, this is the moment when it hooked me," but seriously--the first time I saw this smile, I was done for. Talk about an entire face lighting up...

Wishing this guy many of these smiles (and thanking him for many in return) on his birthday.

endeavour musings vi
featuring: quartet s5e5, Bright + Thursday I just want to highlight this scene:
BRIGHT: I don't want to have to raise my voice in front of the men, but this station is currently under review. THURSDAY: They wouldn't simply shut Cowley down, though, would they, sir? BRIGHT: Results, Thursday. Results. We shall live or die by our achievements… or the lack of them. THURSDAY: To be honest, sir… ..I'm not sure I've got the miles left in me to start over at a new nick. Particularly if it meant a new guv'nor.
It actually doesn't need any highlighting, because Lesser + Allam convey a lifetime's life in less than 2 minutes. Everything about this scene is gorgeous: Bright's confidence in Thursday about the review (as compared "to the men"), Thursday's honesty and doubt about the political machinations of upper management, Bright's honesty and doubt in return ("or lack of them"), and then Thursday doubles down on that honesty with a straightforward, not sentimental loyalty.
I love that Bright's cynicism here about "results," as the gauge of a successful review, and how that contrasts with the emotional onus of the rest of their conversation: the men, the station, governors (people vs systematic measurements) I love the earthiness of Thursday's metaphor ("got the miles") as if he were a beast of burden, and the vulnerability when he says a "new guv'nor." Thursday intimates to Morse that it doesn't matter who the man in charge is, but that isn't really true: where Box tempts Thursday further down the path of self destruction, Bright only ever calls him back. They've seen each other through a lot already, and there's more to come! Compare it to when Thursday mentions putting in his papers to Morse: it's because he's "too set in his ways" and he won't do "cloak and dagger" coppering. It's the spirit of the same thing he says to Bright, but Thursday can't or won't be vulnerable to Morse in the same way -- Morse is too young to understand (as Bright will), that Thursday's tired of this life.
And also worried that all of this has meant nothing. The whole exchange between Bright and Thursday is roiled underneath by that worry, by both men, that their life's work is being thrown on the scrape heap, and that it was worthless.
I love that the show acknowledges that even though Bright is older than Thursday, Thursday has a lot more mileage. The toll of being a copper has fallen on them unevenly, mostly because of class but also personality. And Bright cares about that, and him. They value each other regardless. It fits into the enlisted man-officer dynamic and surmounts it.
The layers on layers here is stunning: the two steaming cups of tea, the comfortable English ritual, punctuating the vulnerability of the confidences between them.
(Strange calls their meetings "Morning Prayers," at one point and I love that description and its connotations to bits.)
Final note: Bright's friendship for Thursday is the parallel of Max's for Morse. Neither has the all-or-nothing character of the friendship between Thursday & Morse, which at times is pointlessly self-sacrificial to destruction's sake, but it is lovely and beautiful and bright (yes) all the same.

Last Movie: I tried to watch “Black Bag” this morning and it’s godawful.

Last TV Show: I’m ashamed to say that I’m obsessed with all iterations of “Below Deck“. Guilty pleasure. I should probably say Ludwig to sound smarter.

Last Thing I Googled: Directions
Looking forward to: having more time for Endeavour on Tumblr!
Current Obsession: The Traitors!
Getting to know me!
Rules: tag 10 people you want to know more about

It’s been said 1 million times, but no reason not to re-blog somebody saying it again.
This feels so extremely rare to be able to say about a TV show but I genuinely feel like the pilot episode of Endeavour is probably the best TV pilot in existence, and one of (if not THE) best episodes of the whole series. I know the creators of Endeavour refer to the episodes as films in their own right and that REALLY feels exceptionally true for the pilot. I've rewatched it more than any other part of the series just because I love it so much. The way it establishes who Morse is as a character from the start is incredible (the angelic choir in the background as Morse is gazing out the bus window at the beginning makes me Feel So Many Things). You know who he is so quickly but in such a unique way, because he's a fascinating character but not exactly an archetype that you can put your finger on. Oh, he's a brilliant young upstart with bright eyes and a quicker mind than most. He's also deeply emotional, sensitive, lover of opera and poetry, and he sings in a choir. He knows he's brilliant at what he does and either shrinks away or gets snippy at any hint of condescension from his superiors, but oh, how he bleeds with the desire to please those he respects. He has a deeply held set of beliefs and principles that he lives by, but every now and then his aching need to be loved, loved, loved, oh won't somebody please love him, will tempt him into bending them. He's an angel and a wounded animal at the same time.
And you get all that from the pilot.

I believe the release of the fidget is more elegantly pronounced in the filmed example. I think we can probably chalk that up to the coursing of adrenaline that live performance causes.
Spot the Difference...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In my ummm... 'analysis' of Evans and his various fidgets I've noticed a few recurring ones including this beauty where he draws his thumb along his palm from his finger
I think I'd better watch it again just to be sure though..
