You know what I really like about Alex from Julie and the Phantoms?

He wasn’t a gay stereotype TV always have.

The way he dresses isn't flamboyant like other TV show gays. He had the same fashion as the other phantoms. He just looked like a 90s grunge/punk teenage boy.

He didn't talk in that one accent almost all TV show gays share.

The only thing kinda stereotypical he did was the dancing.

And even his sassy remarks came off as more sarcastic and chill.

Then how we find out. The guys already know. There's not a big reveal or coming out scene. Just Alex is gay. The fact that it was even SAID. It wasn't just subtext, we didn't have to guess or assume. They say it outloud. "Gay" wasn't used as a bad word in a kids show. It was just a fact about him.

Even the "Alex is emotional" joke doesn't seem like a hurtful stereotype. The joke at first is Alex cries sure but then the very next scene it shows Luke & Reggie crying and he calls them emotional.

And everything with Willie. Its so relaxed and easy. There is no crisis. No I like a straight guy who turns out to hate me when I come out. No unnecessary homophobic scene. They are also both dead already so we don't even have to deal with that "all gay couples end in tragedy" thing either. It's clearly mutual.

Its so obvious they like each other too. I mean the museum date?

How Willie always grabs Alex's hand.

The "There's a lot to um... like here" while giving the 😍 eyes.

The "I'd do anything for you" departure before that HUG.

Even when Luke finds out he has a crush. Its just a best friend teasing not a making fun of a gay kid. The "I'm happy for you Alex."

I just really loved this gay representation & think we need more like it.

PS: flamboyant gay guys are 100% valid I just think diversity is important for LGBTQ+ Rep.

I finished Love, Victor. SPOILERS

10/10 I loved it so much. The way they portrayed being gay but not sure was so refreshing. It wasn’t a “oops guess I just like guys.” He slowly tried to understand what he was feeling. He didn’t force anything. He didn’t even try to go to the next level with Mia because he knew he couldn’t do it. I apreciate how a Victor reached out to Simon and how Simon was responsive to him. And how Simon never flat out said “no bro ur not into her ur just trying to be” so that was a good switch-a-roo as far as support goes. I was at first a little sus’ when Brahm and his friends accidentaly reaviled they knew the whole trip that victor was one of them. However when Simon explained the whole ���I needed some help too” bit, I actually really liked how he went to the people who could help the most. Also when Simon gave Victor his jacket , my heart melted. That jacket got Simon throughout his coming out journey and it was so refreshing to see the look of pure happiness on Victor’s face when he put it on him and they went back into the club. I also loved Victor’s actor’s style of portraying emotion. You could see his thoughts in his eyes and eyebrows. Micheal Cimino really put himself into the role and you can feel the fear and love victor has for everyone around him. Also Benji’s personality just made me smile consistently. George Sear very clearly put everything he had to give into his performance.The school students themselves were very realistic. The “locker room talk” was realistic and I appreciate that Andrew wasn’t a dick about him being gay. It’s very true that guys will say “oh dude that’s gay” but not have anything against gay people, so I’d say the writing for the teens was quite spot on. Even the use of slag was correct and not cringe which I was Not expecting. Victors family were very realistic as well. His sister deserves the world, she’s been through a lot. His younger brother also is so precious. It was also very refreshing to see victor’s father say he was proud of him for standing up for benji and his boyfriend. It was also sadly realistic when he said “let’s hope you’re younger brother doesn’t turn out that way.” I can’t imagine how victor must’ve felt EVERY time he said something along the lines of “no gay here.” Anyway, these are just a few of my thoughts.
