she shrugged, a small smile on her face. “oh, good. looks like i guessed it right.” she took a step back as the other rose to their feet, sneaking a glance at the real-life golden retriever. 

“no problem. it’s good to give credit where it’s due.” she adjusted her purse and reached out to shake the other’s hand. “i’m chloe keets. it’s very nice to meet you, tatum. how long have you been an illustrator?”

SHE ALWAYS loved when people took an interest in her art. it made her feel like she was doing something right. “ it’s nice to meet you too. ” she smiled. Tatum thought for a moment at the question she had been asked. “ oh boy ... it’s been a while now. ” her eyes squinted as she fell deep in thought before blinking quickly. “ anyway -- the time doesn’t matter. all I know is I have since I was a kid. ”

she sipped at her iced coffee absentmindedly. chloe herself didn’t notice but she had been staring at the illustration this person was creating for a good ten minutes now. the process of illustration always entranced her. it always looked so…good. she was more of an art history person than an actual artist ; she loved reading about and meeting artists and analyzing all the nuances and behaviors that lead to their creations.

“it looks really good. i love golden retrievers.” she said, out of the blue. “unless that’s not a golden retriever because i’m horrible with dog species sometimes.”

TATUM GLANCED up at the voice and smiled upon realizing what she had said. “ yes, ” the girl giggled. “ it is a golden retriever. ” Tatum glanced up at the dog who was still sat nicely beside its owner. “ thank you, though --- for the compliment. ” she placed her sketchbook back in her bag before rising to her feet. “ I’m Tatum. ” she offered her hand for a proper handshake.

Penelope bit her lip and nodded. “Yeah, sure!” She agreed. “Where will I meet you? And what time?” She asked, raising her eyebrows slightly. 

SHE LOVED going out, especially with friends. “ well, I can pick you up after your shift? ” Tatum thought for a moment. “ and then we can pick where we feel like going then. ”

“ of course , we do actual interviews . we need firsthand intel on what we’re looking for . ” he chuckles , both at the question and her brief struggle with the equipment . “ i hope that’s not sarcasm . this whole business is full of excitement . you haven’t lived until you’ve stepped into a dark room , wondering if the burst of wind against the back of your neck is mother nature or something … more sinister . ” so maybe the spiel is a bit dramatic , but such was the nature of romeo . “ mm , four years . ” two of them had been complete amateur hour , however .

SHE WONDERED what it was like to catch actual paranormal activity on camera. Tatum was easily scared so that line of work was not for her -- though that wouldn’t stop her from trying it once or twice. “ do you think ... I could go with you to the interview? and just watch? ” she didn’t have much to do today and in all honesty, that would be the highlight of her boring day. “ wait, um ... sinister ? ” her brows upturned slightly, feeling concerned.

Avoiding all possible eye contact, he gave a short nod and took a seat while examining the drawing. “Wow” he breathed, “You’re really talented” He said while shifting his gaze slowly up to her face. “Where’d you learn to draw like that?” He asked, genuinely interested. He had always admired people with a knack for drawing, since he himself seemed to have two left hands when it came to that side of the arts.

MEMORIES FLOODED back to that time in her life ... there was a sinking feeling in her chest that she couldn’t shake off. “ well, while my friend was in .. the hospital, ” her attention turned back to the drawing she had done ; not wanting to look at the man. “ I used to draw her little doodles and comics to make her laugh. so I guess I picked up a few tricks doing that. ”

Penny bit her lip, thinking about her schedule. “I have lunch from 1 to 2 and then I’m finished at five she told her, nodding, “but I can get away with closing at four-thirty.” Penelope added.

THE CORNER of Tatum’s lip pulled slightly to the side, causing a small dimple to form in the girl’s cheek. “ alright .... umm, ” she thought for a moment. “ want to grab some grub after your shift? ”

Ayan had been walking aimlessly around the area, looking, but not actually seeing where he was going. Thoughts were heavy on his mind, along with a weird feeling he couldn’t seem to shake off. He would occasionally bump into strangers, momentarily shaking him out of his daze, only to succumb to his mind once more. Deciding the safer option- for others- was to take a seat, he made his way into what looked like an eating area, and zeroed in on an empty booth. He didnt see that there was someone sitting in the chair when he bumped into it. “Im so sorry” Ayan mumbled as he turned toward the person he had disrupted, his face pointing downwards. 

SHE WOULDN’T admit that the man startled her --- it didn’t make her jump or anything ; the kind of scared that you only feel on the inside for a few seconds. “ don’t worry about it, ” she smiled gently at the man. “ if you’re planning on staying, the company would be nice. ” Tatum drew the last line of its paw on the drawing before blowing air gently to get off any excess pencil lead. “ how does it look? ” the girl asked, a smile still wide on her face.

“I’ll remember that.” Penny smiled at the girl. She then shrugged. “It’s usually like this at this time. I’m not complaining.” She told her, raising her eyebrow.

TRUTHFULLY, Tatum probably would have preferred it to be this quiet if she worked as a cashier or barista. she would much rather be bored than overwhelmed and possibly being sworn at. “ what time do you get off? ”

“Of course not,” Penny laughed softly, shaking her head, “my romance lives through everyone that goes on a date in here.” She joked, shrugging. “Maybe one day, but not now.” She told her.

“ well -- you know if you want to be showered with flowers or compliments, I’m just a phone call away. ” Tatum smiled gently, taking a sip of her drink. “ not very busy today, eh? ” at most, there was 5 people. “ I guess it’s still early-ish though. ”

Dom rolled her eyes. “Yeah, you’d definitely win if it was a drawing contest.” He joked as he sat down next to her. He looked over her shoulder seeing the drawing. “Whoa, that’s really cool! Is that a … Dog?” He asked. “That’s so cute. I love dogs. We had a dog back home and he was huge! Man, I miss him.” He said, rambling a bit.

TATUM SMILED up at her roommate. she picked up her sketchbook so he could have a better look at it. “ we used to have a dog too ... it actually looked just like that fella. ” her attention turned to the dog who the drawing was of but unfortunately, he and his owner had left. she let out a sigh. “ well there was a beautiful golden retriever sitting over there. ” Tatum couldn’t help but smile. “ dogs are a blessing to humans, honestly. we don’t deserve them. ”

TATUM was quick to help him. “ you do actual interviews? ” asked the girl, struggling to carry what she thought would be a light piece of equipment. she raised her eyebrows. “ this whole ghost hunting thing sounds like a load of fun, huh? ” Tatum thought about offering to help him do it but she wasn’t exactly the greatest when it came to paranormal ; likely because she believes in ghosts. when a single pen -- seemingly -- moves on its own, she books it away. “ how long have you been doing it? ”

he was fumbling , cameras and stray equipment threatening to fall . if his partner wasn’t so fucking late , this wouldn’t be a problem . alas , he was carrying what was meant for two and the struggle was quite the show . “ give me a hand , yeah ?? ” he directed the question at the nearest person , uncaring if they had anything better to do . clearly , this was more important . “ i have to get to an interview in , uh , like five minutes . and i can’t be late . ” actually , he probably could , but he didn’t like to keep their informants waiting . “ um , you may actually know her . it’s macy grayson . sweet old woman . at least she sounded that way over the phone . ”

FROWNING, Tatum took a double take at the girl. “ wait ..... people actually do that? ” she tilted her head slightly, wondering why. “ that seems so ... unnatural. ” Tatum crossed her arms. “ and in a weird way, it’s kind of uncomfortable to think about. ”

“Can you believe there are actually people who pour milk before cereal?” the brunette shook her head, before rolling her eyes. “The nerve. Are they even human?”

“T!” Penelope whined, “where’s the fun in that?!” She asked. “Just go, have some fun.” Penny said, raising her eyebrow. She took the money and put it into the register, getting her change and handing it to her. “I’ll give you your coffee on the house tomorrow if you do!”

TATUM rose her eyebrows. “ convincing argument, ” with a smile on her lips, she rolled her eyes, “ fine, okay .... okay. I’ll do it .. I’ll go. ” she stuffed the change in her pocket and leaned against the counter. “ what about you? any luck in the dating department? ”

“Woah…” Penelope said, filling up the large paper cup. “That’s rough,” she mumbled, “but, at least he’ll think you’re funny?” Penny teased. She offered the girl a smile and fitted a lid onto the cup. “2.89,″ she said.

“ really, Pen . . . ” she shook her head slowly. “ if anything, she’s going to think I’m a weirdo. ” Tatum shrugged. “ I don’t even know if I want to go though, honestly. ” the brunette dug out a $5 bill out of her pocket and placed it on the counter. “ I might cancel. she seemed ..... snobby when we facetimed. ” and Tatum knew that she wasn’t the luckiest when it came to romance.
