It’s not something that can be determined via genetic code or scientific analysis or mysticism or whatever. No one has ever figured it out and it can’t be transferred or reproduced. It just is.

(I do have my own theory that I use in my headcanons in worlds with Abrahamic religions, god angel and demons etc; it being a gift/curse that random descendants of Caine inherit, but that’s just my take and only works in verses that have that mythology.)
