Susan struggled to free herself from the other woman’s grasp, but it was like a vice around her neck and she could only follow as she led her out into the cold. Her senses were flooded immediately, chasing the warmth, and life of the people on the street.
She closed her eyes, trying to focus.
She hadn’t wanted to believe the things her family did, but even in her thirst, Susan realized what this was really about. Revenge, of course and the thought fell out of her and into the warm arms that caught her.
There was nothing else to focus on.
The singular sound in Susan’s mind was that beating heart against her and the heat surrounding her. She vaguely registered that he lowered his head voicing his concern, and she only reached up to touch the kind stranger’s face as if she was comforting him.
Her touch was gentle and he wasn’t afraid. There was only confusion in his eyes before she tore into his neck.
Jadis circles Susan and the boy. His heart is slowing and his limbs are growing, hung at his sides just as his knees start to buckle. She can see the girl still chase the last of his blood as he falls to floor though she tries her best to hug him to her.
“Your family owed me a debt. You’ll be the one to pay it.”
She elaborates before the high of the young man’s life fades from the other’s skin and she finds her delusions of freedom once more. She reaches out and wipes the speck of blood on her cheek then licks it off from the tip of her finger.
“The war has scattered the hunters. More will rise, but you are a Pevensie. You can find them easily and they will welcome you. I will teach you how and then when your work has sufficed, I will free you.”

Susan was far from perfect, and the face staring back at her was a stranger just as the woman in the reflection. There was something dangerous in the gaze that watched her, and the sting of tears in her eyes burned like a lick of fire.
The memory of the woman’s shadow looming over her still lingered in her memory. She had said her name was Jadis and she had said it as if it mean anything to her–
Everything.
“What use do you have for another’s perfection? Is yours not enough?”
Now there was the FIRE promised in her blood. Jadis grins and her hand traps the back of the girl’s neck and pushes her low. She’s still so weak, but a malleable weapon in her hands.
“I’m amounting an army,” she explains.
Her tone is casual and she holds Susan without any real effort. She guides her to the cold air outside where the night bites back with the winter frost and heat is trapped in the passing bodies.
“We are not the only creatures that walk this Earth. Your family knew that.”
Jadis loosens her grip and pushes her outside, straight into the arms of a young soldier. A war veteran with kind eyes that catches her without hesitation.

Rise, kings and queens of Narnia. All of you. I do not think I am ready. It’s for that very reason I know you are.

“I didn’t ask for that. I didn’t want this.”
Jadis bites back a hiss. All teeth and venom at the girl’s insolence. Did she not realize the gift bestowed on her? More worthy recipients await the shadows, ready to rejoice in life everlasting.
“I have made you perfect. You will never be less than what you are now.”
Alas, it is not immortality that plagues the young girl’s now still heart. She catches an icy guilt in her eyes, and she almost rolls her own in response.
“You are free of them, dear. Siblings only serve to weigh you down with their rot.”

“My family? You’re a liar.”
Susan tried to wrench her hand free, but to avail. She couldn’t feel her fingers and she was losing feeling in the rest of her arm. The ice in her veins climbled into her chest, a sharp pain, doubling her over and forcing her to stare into those lifeless eyes.
“You think you can drive me to vengeance with lies? Not again. I know what you’re trying to do. You’re getting desperate, but you can’t use them.”
“I am not your only enemy, Susan.”
The mask of kindness is not to be found now. Her gaze is as sharp as the ice forming across the girl’s skin. She must listen closely. Often truth is best weapon. She has no need for lies.
“Don’t fool yourself. You’re not beloved. Never have been, even with your family at your side. There was chaos. There was bloodshed. Your brother, Peter’s sword is soaked in blood. I’ll tell you who did it. There’s no price. You’ll give me what I want either way, because I know you, Gentle Queen. You were the only one ready to do what it took to save Edmund.”

“You’re an echo. What could you possibly have to say that you haven’t already? Your words are borrowed, repeated. I’ve heard it all before. I’m not coming back here.”
Susan turned, her cloaked swept across the floor. She had no intention to look back. Her eyes were set on the doors as the illusion dissolved around them.
“Get out of my way.”
“Borrowed?”
The girl could not be that naive. What was a person if not a culmination of their memories and thoughts? In the middle of the dead world that had birthed her, the last of her spirit remained.
“If you wish to believe that, then you can. It does not make them untrue.”
Her hand catches Susan’s wrist and she can already see the look of surprise as she feels the ice cold skin on her. It travels, and her skin grows pale with the touch.
“Don’t you want to know who killed your family?”

“No, I don’t,” Susan said firmly. She didn’t even remember getting here, or the thought that got here. It was torn in her head. A mixture of memory and illusion.
I was on my way somewhere else. I was going to…”
Realization struck her, and she stared back the queen. Her mind pushed through the illusion, searching for a foothold.
“Charn. I was going to Charn. I made it. It’s you. Isn’t it?”
“An echo, but yes. It always is me, dear. Waiting here.”
Her eyes follow the girl’s movement with interest. She can sense a shift in her demeanor. A splinter in the mask and with it Jadis stands over her, nearing with purpose and graceful stride.
“I did call you though. The only reason you decided to come here was to look for traces of the weapon, but you already know it lives and dies with us. There’s no trace, only in you.”
She near enough to feel the warmth of Susan’s breath. Life.
“I want to talk.”

Susan bowed at the steps. Her gaze was low and she searched her thoughts. It escaped her– the reason. Why had she come? There was strange haze to the light behind the queen. It was too bright.
Question it. No.
It was just fine.
“I’m…” Susan looked around, brows drawn. “Everything is fine. I’m well. I’m just visiting. I figured I’d come to see you.” Why? Why? Why?
Cold gathers in the dream. She leans forward with a sharp grin on her face. Poor girl. It won’t last long, the illusion. Susan is far smarter than that, but Jadis likes to draw out the confusion and helplessness. It’s the most entertainment she gets here.
She waits.
“I called you. Don’t you remember?”

There is false kindness in the gaze she casts on the girl. The mask remains impeccable despite the distaste. She is far too soft and always on the verge of tears, yet she wears a mask too and no one sees it. This dream is perfectly fitted to the girl, a growing thing, a real thing, as far she knows.
“What brings you home, Susan?”
She taps her chin in thought. “You don’t look well.”

the warriors // the foes
“ — It’s always sad.”
“ What does it mean? ”
“ Everything ends. ”
“ I have to — die. ”
“ What else would it be? ”
“ I can do so much more! ”
“ I lied! Everything was a lie! ”
“ Look… the stars… ”
“ I did worse things than you could ever imagine! ”
“ I used to be happy. ”
“ I don’t want to go. ”
“ Be happy. ”
“ Make your confession. ”
“ Because I did. ”
“ You stole it. ”
“ And you ran… and ran.. and ran ”
“ No. You don’t. ”
“ I ran because I was scared! ”
“ Turn and run away—”
“ You must have been like God. ”
“ Are you ready — to become a God? ”
“ So — come on then! ”
“ Kill her — see if I care! ”
“ Take it! ”
“ I have always admired your. ”
“ Things end. That’s all. ”
“ Very soon I won’t be here — ”
“ I can still die. ”
“ I guess I’m — not entirely human… ”
“ It sounds worse than what it is —”
“ I don’t want to die. ”
“ Why do you keep going? ”
“ What is that ? ”
“ Explain —”
“ Unlimited power! ”
“ I feel — like a God. ”
“ I messed up. ”
“ It’s not his fault. ”
“ This — this is what happens when people get in touch with me. ”
“ How — how many have died in your name? ”
“ I was just trying to help. ”
“ We are the only two left. ”
“ They are all gone now. ”
“ I am alone. ”
“ What are you doing!? ”
“ Gone forever. ”
“ I can do — anything. ”
