I really like the word “smitten”. because at first glance you just think of sappy lovey-dovey stuff but also you have to remember this is a word that’s born of the word “smite.” a devastating word. a word that, summarized, means stricken. smitten means stricken as well — struck with devastating affection.

Being back in the alternate timeline was strange. she wasn’t making people manic this time at least, but in order to ensure that she had to trade a fairly vital part of herself: her ability to read the entire spectrum of love. that ability was now with chastity while chastity’s powers resided in cupid. the world felt so colorless without her powers. it made it hard to be present sometimes, but she did her best. right now, she and belphegor were having brunch with the other belgirel and his cupid. they hadn’t told the pair about the trials yet. that conversation would happen tonight when the rest of the hell princes joined them. “so, have you stolen any more of mazikeen’s ships since we last saw each other, gears?” she asked as she leaned her head on belphegor’s shoulder.

Kindness had been sick for a lot of the time that Cupid and Belphegor had been gone, but from what she’d seen of her youngest sister, it made her worried about what Cupid was and had gone through. “Cupid, wait!” Kindness called after her when she saw her in heaven. Kindness didn’t want to disturb her, but she did want to make sure she was alright. “Sorry, if you’re busy maybe I can come help with whatever you’re working on.”

Cupid’s first vacation, if you want to call it that, had gone okay up until the point where she returned home and found out about everything they’d missed. belgirel, dagon, and the others had handled the emergency, but there were significantly more dead in the empty now than before. it always made her sad when new residence joined. she turned when she heard a familiar voice call her name. “nessie!” she hugged her sister. dagon had told her about the cure and how much it hurt. cupid was sad she couldn’t be there for her sisters, but dagon assured her that they all made it out okay. still, cupid’s hug was tight and all encompassing. “i’m glad to see you. i was just trying to catch up on everything i missed,” she told her as she let go. “are you okay? it sounds like a lot went on.” she didn’t think she or bells would be taking a vacation for a while after this.
