Gustav Adolf "Täve" Schur, born 1931 in rural Saxony in what was then Prussia, learned mechanic but widely known for being a former german cyclistist in the German Democratic Republic and the first German to win both the cyclists' world amateur as well as peace rally.
From 1958 to 1990 he was part of the Volkskammer of the GDR for the FDJ (Free German Youth), SED (Socialist Unity Party) and later the PDS (Party for Democratic Socialism). From 1998 to 2002 Schur was part of the PDS fraction in the German Bundestag.
Today he aims to reach at least 100 years of age and puzzles and bewilders liberal and conservative media by vehemently rejecting their historical narratives and treatment of both the GDR and the so-called Neue Bundesländer that are still most commonly referred to as East Germany.

do you know its name? i only know of two (schoppenstube und burgfrieden) and as far as i know they weren't state owned so i'm curious!
my fav DDR anecdote is probably that there was a state-owned gay disco in berlin in the late 80s

you walk down the street and suddenly you hear singing, a cyclist approaches, you avoid eye contact but they’re in a different sphere anyways, another pedestrian is staring off into space in bewilderment as the singing grows distant, neither of you say anything, there’s no escape
you used to think children are cute but not anymore, it’s 10pm and there’s still children’s voices echoing through the streets, it’s been like this for five, ten years but they don’t seem to get older they just grow in numbers, you’re anxious about what will happen once they’re teenagers
the working class kneipen and gasthäuser have disappeared, sometimes when you lose your way you stumble upon one, you decide to go there sometime, but you already know you won’t find your way back, if you do it’s been replaced by a mother-child café or a start up
you say gentrification three times to your reflection, a person who doesn’t even live here appears to tell you you should stop being so negative and hateful, at least you can get soy and oat milk everywhere now, you wait for another compelling argument, you wait
there’s two people with baby buggies blocking the way, they don’t notice you, they do notice their friend with a bicycle though who destroys your last hope of getting past them without crossing the street, your memories of what walking down the street used to be like grow fainter every day
they are discussing how taking economic refugees is not acceptable, germany can’t take everyone they say, they are people from all over germany who have come to berlin for better job opportunities and lower cost of living, they print post cards of the communist resistance fighters the streets are named after, but you can’t vote for die linke
