The fire that seemed to engulf Harriet as they kissed also gave her the closest sensation to weightlessness that she’d had since becoming mortal again. For a brief moment, she was afraid she’d float away or disappear. Sure, she’d flirted and fooled around with other ghosts, but that all paled in comparison to the flurry of passion and excitement that surged through her like a raging river. Reluctantly, Harriet pulled back a little to allow them to breath, her chest heaving slightly with effort as she looked up into his eyes. “Did you feel that? Because I know I certainly did,” she teased, though she held onto him for fear that her legs might give way if he were to leave her.

Nick had never felt anything like this in his life.  Normally when he kissed women, it was empty and only for his own benefit, but something about this was different.  It was better.  He didn’t want it to end, but when it did he took a deep breath.  He stood there in silence for a moment, trying to find the words that he wanted to say, but it was increasingly difficult with Hattie looking into his eyes.  “I... Yes.”  He managed, despite all of the thoughts running through his head.

“No, that…I’m not a terribly kind person either, all truth being told. Don’t worry about that,” she insisted, her hands clenching her arms as she sniffled in an effort to stop her tears. His words about a normal life caused her jaw to drop a little, and his words about her deserving better elicited one of her signature eye rolls. “Oh shut up you.” she muttered before pulling him in for a kiss. Snaking a hand around the back of his neck, she held him close as their lips melded together.

“Well you’re certainly better than I am.”  Nick replied with a deflated chuckle, before his head snapped up.  “Did you just tell me to-”  He started before his words were cut off by her lips colliding with his.  At that moment, it was almost like he was put under another spell and his normal thoughts fled from his mind, leaving it mostly empty.  He’d never felt something like this before, not even the joy he got from tormenting the innocent people of Salem felt anything like this.  He instinctively wrapped his arms around her waist, holding her a little closer.

Harriet bit her lip and averted his gaze, knowing she was being foolish but not caring at this point. She was extremely emotional and vulnerable, and wasn’t sure what on earth to do. So, she took Dee’s advice and her own. “I have feelings for you, Nick. Real feelings.” she responded, warily looking up at him. “You’re handsome, charming, and demented and for the briefest of moments, you were kind. You were so kind to me, and I fell for it, despite knowing you were under the same strange influence I was. I’m so sorry, I just…I’m sorry. I don’t know how much time we’re going to have here in this town with me being mortal, but I don’t want to waste any of it. That’s what’s wrong.”

Nick’s eyes went slightly wide as she spoke, not sure what to make of it.  No one had ever had feelings for him, and he didn’t even know what it felt like to have feelings for someone else, but he couldn’t deny the strange fluttering in his stomach.  “I’m sorry too.  I’m not a kind person, I don’t think I know how to be, and however I was just acting obviously isn’t me, but...  Whatever just happened didn’t put any new ideas into my head.  What I said about living a normal life...  I never wanted to admit it but I’ve always believed that.”  He looked down and pursed his lips together.  “But you don’t know how much humanity you have left.  If you don’t want to waste it on a man who doesn’t know how to feel, I understand.  You deserve better.”

At Hattie's words, Nick's anger seemed to dissipate and his eyes went wide. He looked at her just in time to see the tears in her eyes and he shook his head. "Hattie, wait..." He moved swiftly after her, stepping in front of the sink before she could get to it. "What's the matter?"

“Alright? Why of course I’m-” He began before it felt as though a force hit him and suddenly his mind began to clear. He had a look of shock on his face as he became aware of what was happening before it turned to one of anger. He gripped the counter in the bathroom and the faucet started spewing water at an unnatural rate. He took his hands off of the counter and cracked his knuckles. “Well, now I have an excuse to torture someone.”

Harriet flinched a little as Nick flew to the counter, a steady stream of tears now spilling out as the water from the faucet began to soak the front of her dress. His words elicited a broken, “You already have.” Turning around slowly, her eyes seemed to glaze over as she said quietly, “I-I need to go.” Pushing past Nick, Harriet made her way over to the table where she knew she had left her food out. She started to clean off her plate, knowing that despite her state she at least needed to clean up. It’s what her father would have expected of her.

Harriet could feel her eyes fill with tears, even as a strange sensation enveloped her once more. Suddenly she was young again, and the realization hit her as she looked at Nick through the mirror that he might have changed back as well. “Nick…Are you alright?” was all she could manage as she choked back tears and resisted the urge to run. Even if what he said was some witchcraft, it was a lot for her to take in and it hit her hard.

Harriet preened in the mirror for a moment, admiring her looks before feeling her veins turn to ice at his question. “I…Umm…Well I don’t know. I mean, I’m not opposed to it at the moment. Then again, time meant something much different to me as an ethereal being so, umm…I’m sorry, forget I said anything.” The iciness in her veins was replaced with a boiling heat, a heat that caused her neck to flush crimson in shame. Why would she say something like that? Hopefully, he would forget it and not get too terribly upset.

“But what if...  Perhaps I don’t want to forget you said anything.”  Nick muttered softly before slowly walking toward the bathroom and lurking in the door frame.  “I mean, it’s a it of a Sanderson tradition to stay young forever, at least, it’s what my mother and aunts have always done, but...  I’m not sure if that’s the life I want to live.  It’s not such a bad idea, you know.  Living a normal life with someone you care about.”

Though Harriet would never admit it, his words played with her heart in ways that she never really knew she was capable of. A fierce blush found its way to her cheeks as she walked in search of the bathroom. “Oh, so you think I’m lovely? I’m almost afraid to ask what else you think of me.” Harriet called out as she walked into the bathroom, gazing into the mirror intently. “Well, one thing about it…If we were ever able to grow old together, I wouldn’t look too dreadful at this age.”

“Well of course.  It would be hard not to.”  Nick replied with a simple shrug as he continued to clean up the kitchen.  Her next sentence made him drop the pan he was holding in surprise.  “Grow old together...?  Is that- Is that something you think you might want?”

“Not at a-oh!” Harriet squeaked, clapping his hand over his mouth before pushing back from the table and doubling over, the oddest sensation tingling throughout his limbs. Before he could turn around, Harriet had become a girl once more. Well, a woman was more like it, as she was far curvier than her younger self had been. “Oh…Oh my…” Harriet gasped, touching her face and body, “I’m…I’m old…Never in all my years did I think I’d see this…” Standing up, she looked at Nick and asked, “Is there a mirror somewhere darling?”

Nick’s eyes went wide and his lips parted in shock.  “Oh my goodness...”  He took a small step back.  “I’d hardly say you’re old...  Just older.  You’re still as lovely as ever.”  He looked around for a moment in search of a mirror.  “Not in this room, but there’s one in the bathroom.”

“Huh…I never would have thought of it that way!” he admitted with a grin, taking the syrup and pouring a bit of it on the so-called pancakes. Taking his fork, he took a small bite, his eyes widening as he groaned in delight. “These are delicious! My compliments to the chef!” Hattie cried in delight, digging into the pancakes with reckless abandon.

“Not bad for my first time, huh?”  Nick chuckled and leaned against the table.  “Who knows, maybe I’ll try this cooking thing more often.”

“I…Well, I’ve never actually had pancakes, so I suppose I wouldn’t mind trying them. What are they, exactly?” Harriet sat himself down at the table studying Nick and the food with increasing confusion. How on earth and why on earth was this happening? Perhaps he could grow to enjoy this new Nick, and maybe Nick could come to enjoy this new masculine form, despite it being a marked downgrade from her female body.

“Neither have I, but I found the recipe on this box and it wasn’t too different than putting a potion together, so I thought I’d give it a try.  They’re just fluffy little cakes that you put a sweet, sticky syrup on.”  He put two on a smaller plate and slid it, along with a bottle of syrup, over to Hattie.  “I promise, they’re delicious.”

“I…Well, you’re not exactly the nicest person usually. That’s not a slight, mind you, merely an observation,” he replied, still a bit unsure how to feel about this suddenly chipper man before him. “Well, I suppose we should all have a threshold for madness today, shouldn’t we? Umm…Well, what shall we do until this witchcraft wears off?”

“No no, I agree with you.  I wasn’t a good person, and I regret it.  I want to make amends.”  He smiled softly, tilting his head toward the plate of pancakes.  “Well for right now, we could enjoy some breakfast.  If you don’t like pancakes I would be happy to make something else, just say the word.”

Harriet stiffened as the male wrapped his arms around him, eyes widening in shock at the sudden gesture. “I…I…” In that moment, Harriet would have given anything in the world to have been her normal self, if only so that she might not feel so awkward in this situation. “Why are you being so kind all of a sudden? I…This isn’t like you.” he asked, trying to process all of the emotions going on at once.

“You’re in distress.  Why would I be anything but kind to you?”  Nick’s brow furrowed in slight confusion as he slowly pulled back from the hug, hands resting on Hattie’s shoulders.  “I’m not sure.  When I woke up this morning, I just felt... positive.  Perhaps it’s because it’s such a lovely morning, I don’t know.

Evidently, Harriet was not the only one who woke up with drastic changes. Nick was suddenly…Cheerful? Genuinely so, with a smile that, had it been on anyone else would have been ugly and fake, yet on him it seemed just as befitting as the rest of him. “Oh, that’s what I was afraid of! Do I look better as a man? Do you find me more attractive in this body than my other? Oh goodness, what am I to do?” she inquired hurriedly, trying her best not to sob. It took a lot to truly terrify Harriet, and this had somehow managed to top the list.

“Harriet, please.”  Nick removed his apron, placed it on the table, and made his way over to her.  “You’re attractive in both forms, male and female.  You have no reason to be afraid.”  He smiled softly and, not knowing how else to calm her down, wrapped her in a hug.  “I’m sure this will pass soon, we just have to be patient.”

“I, uhh…Nick, I didn’t realize you cooked!” Harriet smiled briefly before being brought back to reality. “Oh gosh, I’m so sorry. Nick, it’s Harriet! I’ve suddenly awoken and found myself to now be a man. How do I look? Oh, I’ve never been so frightened in all of my life.”

“I never have, but when I woke up this morning I just had the urge to give it a try and it’s actually quite fun!”  He smiled, brushing a bit of flour off of his apron before looking back up.  “Harriet...?  Oh my goodness.”  His eyes went a bit wide, but the smile soon reappeared on his face.  “You have no reason to be frightened, dear.  You look lovely.”

“I doubt that, Nicky. I see the way your eyes light up when we go and play with innocents. That is not something you can fake.” Just like she couldn’t fake being a good person for very long.

“Well regardless, I’m sorry Lucy, but that’s not who I am anymore.  I’ve changed, and I have no desire to torture innocents.”  He placed a plate in the sink and started carefully untying the apron he wore.  “They’ve done nothing to us personally, they don’t deserve to be played with.”

For the first time in quite some time, Harriet was entirely speechless. Her piercing eyes gazed at him with a softness that she was entirely unaccustomed to. In a fleeting moment, she leaned forward and pecked his cheek lightly. “You’re pretty dreadful yourself. she replied giggling softly, secretly pleased to see her blood red lip emblazoned on his warm, chiseled cheek.

Nick’s eyes went wide and he took in a sharp breath when he felt her lips brush against his cheek.  Flirting was one thing, he’d done that a few times to gain the trust of unsuspecting girls, but actual physical contact was something completely different and he had no idea what to do.  “I...  Thank you.”  He spoke quietly as he tried to hide the fact that his cheeks were turning a shade of red.
